I'd move back if it was only 2-3 months LOL.

In the past 500 million years South Florida has been 120 feet below sea level five different times and 120 feet above sea level five different times.
Currently 1o to 20 ft elevation

The terrifying part is that it’s still a 5 even though it has parked itself over the Bahamas for the last 24 hours or so and it’s going to hit warm waters and moist air after it’s done with them.

It reminds me of Andrew in a way. Small but powerful. I’ve never seen a hurricane with an absolutely perfect circle of an eye. I’m getting married in January and we had planned a honeymoon in the Bahamas. I think we need to change our plans. Poor people.

Congratulations Kontra, and unfortunately I agree, I haven’t checked the news this morning but I’m guessing it won’t be good for the Bahamas.

Just curious: since this sort of thing occurs so often where you live, why aren't the power lines moved to a less-vulnerable place (perhaps underground)?

I worked on power lines for 40 years. The reason overhead was preferred was because that required smaller sized wire and it was much easier to find the damage. It was also easier and quicker to repair.

However, the town I worked out of for the last 20 years required any new construction to be underground. That seems like a good idea for hurricane areas.

Feeder rain bands come and go. The eye is stalled, as predicted, moving just 1 mph over Grand Bahama island. Still have power and internet here, 100 miles away. Wind gusts, but nothing huge.

I will feel more relieved when a national hurricane center update shows it moving NORTH. We should see that by this afternoon

I agree, they keep on saying it will move N, but keeps on heading west. My daughter asked me what if its too strong to overcome whatever current makes it move north. I really didnt have an answer except to say the currents are way up there so size of hurricane won't matter which is total made up bs said so she didn't worry. We are outside of cone now, so not too worried but remain watchful.

I spent 15 days in Mississippi after Katrina doing recovery ( forensic identification) and TV didn't do it justice. Flying in and seeing every single roof either destroyed or covered in blue tarps.....Sensory overload from ruptured sewer lines, dead animals and rotting food (Gulfport was a major port for food ) with small boats 30 feet up in the trees and houses 3-4 miles inland that had flood waters 4 feet high from the storm surge. I pray for those in the path because Mother Nature has fury unleashed and that was a Cat 3 when it made landfall in Mississippi..

Not really applicable with this storm until the forced turn but the Gulf stream current can be an influence. It is a massive body of water with its own unique atmosphere
Historically, many hurricanes have followed the Gulf Stream path north with only the Outerbanks taking a hit.

I was down in Tampa for Irma and it was such a mess. Ended up bailing to middle of nowhere Georgia and I couldn’t believe what a poor job the state of Florida did with hurricane prep. The sandbag trucks didn’t ever show up on time or at all. They barely had any gas and the gas stations that did were regulated by the police. It was an all around mess.
