I thought this was interesting also the Eagles extended an original pick tender to restricted free agent SLB Chris Gocong.
Scout.com had Hobbs getting an original pick tender, but the Eagles clearly value him more than that and are convinced his neck surgery will heal smoothly. He may be the favorite to return kicks for Philadelphia in 2010. Hobbs also might challenge Sheldon Brown and Joselio Hanson for playing time.
Philadelphia Eagles

He aint beating out Sheldon Brown, thats for sure.

My first guess here is that they value his kick returning more than anything.

How could that be? A 1st rd tender?

I thought most of the folks here at patsfans said that Ellis Hobbs was absolutely awful

No, the majority of people were rightly horrified that he was our best corner in 2008.

What's the salary for 1st round tender? Not sure what Philly is doing here I mean I think Hobbs is solid but that sounds like alot.

Then again I guess in an uncapped season it doesn't really hurt anything

Correct.....the guy was average at best.....but was torched more times than one of Bob Marley's bongs........If Philly is seriously dropping a 1st tender on this guy.....I have serious concerns about their management.....puhleese......

When did two fifth-round picks become a first round pick or even better then a second round pick?

He had good cover skills, but that's only half the battle. He was generally completely unaware of the ball in the air, which led to a number of PI calls, balls caught with his back to the play, and a lack of interceptions. He's a number 3 corner, for us he was a number 1 - that led to the resentment, rightly or wrongly.

So, it's his fault that he suddenly became the #1 due to a lack of surrounding talent?

He did just fine as a #2, and there's no way he's worse than a very servicable #3 nickel back with an increase to the KR game.

Put it this way, he would've been better than Wilhite, Springs, and Butler last year, although I think Butler has way more eventual upside. Not only that, but our KR game took a total downward spiral too.

Maybe Hobbs wasn't exactly a superstar, but I didn't see any improvement without him besides Bodden--which was the original problem of not having a true #1. With a true #1, Hobbs did a lot better.

Umm hate to break it to you, but an original pick tender would mean they get a 2nd rounder back if anyone signs Hobbs. I don't think that anybody will. He's not worth a 2nd.

I think this is as close to as perfect description of him as you can get. The dude had pluses and minuses, like anyone else, but I just don't agree with all the resentment of a player that wasn't any worse than average.

He is a damn good nickel, and possibly a servicable #2 with a great KR game.

If anyone here wants Ellis Hobbs back, hope the pats draft Javier Arenas. An exact replica of Hobbs physically and play style. Mediocre cover corner thats a good nickel and great returner.

Never said it was his fault--the "fault" was someone else's. I agree he would have been better than anyone besides Bodden last year. Just think it's inaccurate to say the majority of people on this site think he sucks b*lls. (However, as a #1 corner, he does).

Agreed. As a #1 CB he isn't very good.

And the use of the word 'majority' (or 'most' as I said) was poor choice too. There are a lot who feel he had talent, and who assess his skills fairly. There are still 'many' however, who needlessly rip him like the second coming of Duane Starks.

It will always be one of those players who some like, and others do not. There are many who fit into this category, such as Sanders, Watson, Light, Maroney, etc. I can't help but feel compelled to stick up for any of them when unfairly talked of.

What are you talking about?!?

Yea, I think we pretty much agree and it's mostly an issue of semantics. However, take away Hobb's return game and I think the majority of Patsfans (including me) still think Hobbs is a nickel at best. :deadhorse:

Hobbs' salary last year was $2.5M, and he was getting 110% of that whether he got a low tender or the first round tender. The Eagles put the higher tender on him to make sure they keep him, but either way they weren't paying him any less.

NM. the report originally said, original pick tender which would make a 3rd rounder required as compensation. Apparently the Eagles think he's worth 2.5M or the 1st round tender.

They had to pay him at that level. (was posted, but here's a link)

Hobbs received a first-round, $ 2.8 million tender, meaning the Eagles would receive a first-round pick if they allowed him to sign elsewhere. It was initially thought that Hobbs was offered an original-round tender (he was drafted in the third round), but he received the first-round level because restricted free agents are guaranteed at least 110 percent of last year’s salary, which in his case is greater than the first-round tender.

Eagles Tender Contracts to Nine RFAs

Good luck to him, always played hard and hurt and I miss his kick returns.

On the other hand, he had a big mouth and I like our talent at CB better now.

Ok, it was because of the 110% rule. That makes sense now. Thanks for clearing that up.
