OT: Greatest trade in Boston sports history?

And at the time they let him walk it was the right thing to do. He was a lazy-ass sandbagger his final years with the Sox.
I don't know. I saw the 20-strikeout game at Detroit, and I saw a guy who still had it, and still wanted it. Everybody struggles now and then, but I definitely didn't consider him washed up at all. JMHO

Bill Russell and 11 titles were obtained for a week of the Ice Capades

Trading the Ice Capades for Bill Russell | The Wages of Wins Journal

The Celtics entered the 1956 draft with the 7th pick. This pick was sent to the St. Louis Hawks – along with Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan, for the 2nd pick. It was believed that the Rochester Royals – who had the first pick – might want to take Russell. Auerbach, though, had a secret weapon. The owner of the Celtics, Walter Brown, was also the president of the Ice Capades. Brown called up the owner of the Royals– Lee Harrison — with the following offer: Brown would send the Ice Capades to Rochester for one week if the Royals would pass on Russell.

Interesting story. Often these stories prove to be mostly true, but not completely true. One fact here or there is either omitted, or untrue. The most interesting part of this story to me is: "We should emphasize that Auerbach claims he never saw Russell play before he was drafted. Auerbach’s interest in Russell was entirely based on what Reinhart told him about his play and the record Russell’s team achieved. Based on this limited information, Auerbach took the following steps to acquire Russell."

I didn't know that. Considering the length of Russell's arms was one of the main things that made Red drool over him, that's very interesting.

Another thing we had going for us was that Rochester wasn't ready for them to draft a black kid in the first round.

Parish and especially McHale had long arms as well.

That was a huge factor, I believe, although I think of it more in connection with the St. Louis side of the arrangements.

By the way -- St. Louis did get one ring out of the deal itself, after Russell sprained his ankle in the Finals against them his sophomore season.

Never thought of that. I'm sure that's right.

i didn't compare them. i never mentioned bill Russel. the dj trade is right up there with all of reds best trades imo.

Fair enough. I, however, was going by the thread title.

I don't buy that for a second. Red absolutely saw Russ play. Hes was just being coy.

With that said, Red said (somewhere) that he can tell how good a player is after watching him for 15 minutes.

Yep, but only because Russell got hurt.

Otherwise, we would've won 10 consecutive World Championships.

Ten...consecutive...WORLD...CHAMPIONSHIPS.

TEN.

Exactly. That's all the more damning. It shows what a lazy-ass sandbagger he was and how he was ripping off the Sox.

Bills fans are almost as bad as Eagles fans....almost
