Social Media Sights and Sounds From Day Five Of Patriots Training Camp
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports
The New England Patriots opened up week two of training camp on Monday, and for the first time this summer, the pads made a return.
Before the day’s work, the Patriots locked up Pro Bowl punter Jake Bailey to a four-year extension worth $13.5 million ($6.5 guaranteed).
Bailey, who turned 25 in June, was entering the final year of his rookie contract and facing a salary-cap charge of $4.05 million. By extending Bailey, his cap charge was reduced by about $1.85 million while increasing the Patriots’ overall cap space to about $4.75 million.
As for how the day’s camp unfolded, work covered the running game, kickoffs, and one-on-one drills between wide receivers and defensive backs. Offensive linemen squared off with the defense.
Offensively, Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe were the quarterbacks as Brian Hoyer was absent. Jones went 10/15 with an interception as Zappe completed 10/15 passes between 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.
In what’s become a common camp occurrence, wide receiver DeVante Parker caught another impressive touchdown grab from Mac Jones, beating Malcolm Butler deep during 11-on-11s.
Rookie wide receiver Tyquan Thornton also drew loud applause from fans in attendance after diving for a deep ball with Joejuan Williams in coverage.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Terrance Mitchell continued his strong camp by recording an interception for the third straight day, and Butler bounced back from the Parker touchdown by causing two pass breakups.
ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss observed rookie guard Cole Strange going through a “welcome to the NFL introduction” as he struggled to block Christian Barmore and Henry Anderson during one-on-one drills. Bill Belichick would take Strange aside to work with him.

Marcus Jones also had a PBU vs. Tre Nixon; Kendrick Bourne beat Jalen Mills twice, including a pretty back-shoulder from Mac Jones; and Terrance Mitchell had a DPI vs. Nelson Agholor

Very first live rep of passing 11s and Mac is picked off by Terrance Mitchell. Tried to hit Thornton on the over route, and didn’t see Mitchell. #Patriots

Bailey Zappe shows off his arm strength with a 40-yard laser to Devin Asiasi. Asiasi made a nice grab as well.

Lottttt of players jumping early today. I saw at least eight different guys run penalty laps for false starts/offsides. Overeager on the first day of full pads.

Mac Jones today: 5-of-9 with an interception in 11-on-11, 5-of-6 in 7-on-7. The INT looked like a possible miscommunication between Jones and rookie WR Tyquan Thornton. Terrance Mitchell was sitting in his zone and the throw went right to him as Thornton ran over the top.

DeVante Parker was on the receiving end of two highlight plays today, making a leaping, twisting catch on deep ball down the right sideline and pulling away for a long TD to the left. Malcolm Butler was on coverage both times, before bouncing back later in the red zone. pic.twitter.com/OgSXS1JQGt
