OT: Greatest trade in Boston sports history?

There have been pitchers who have had great single years but unable to sustain it for several years consecutively.

From 1998 to 2003 - a 6 year stretch, Pedro was better than 1960-1965 Sandy Koufax, which is the standard for dominance.

We will never see that again. Never.
Yup. This pretty much sums up how dominant and in-control he was at the time.

Pedro by a mile..

Yea while the Nomar trade was the defibrillator that team needed, the Pedro trade changed the face of the franchise.

Nope.

John Henry Taking The Wheel after 84 Years of Idiocy was what changed the Fate of the Red Sox.

It took exactly 2 Years to break the so-called Curse.

And The Babe was a Sox Fan to'is Death...

...and beyond.

He was quite obviously talking about the Trade that acquired his legendary Services.

Yea he corrected me later in the tread. I misread it....somehow even though it was clear as day.

Although Espo for Ratelle and Park was a pretty good trade.

Sure but that is not a trade and I said change the face of the franchise...not fate.

Well, fair enough: But I don't believe that one Player changed the face of the Franchise, either.

'twas Henry's Leadership that turned this Franchise on its Axis...in all ways.

No question. It all starts with ownership and leadership.

Henry, Werner and Lucchino brought 21st century vision and thinking and the financial muscle that enabled them to compete (and overtake) with the NYY.

Pedro made them an immediate playoff threat and helped legitimize their efforts in the Latin American baseball community (Ortiz, Manny and others signed here b/c of Pedro).

One trade got them an important part of DJ's career.
One trade got them all of Russell's career.

Not even close.
i didn't compare them. i never mentioned bill Russel. the dj trade is right up there with all of reds best trades imo.

For the Sox, I think I'd go with the Nomar trade which got them Mink & Orlando Cabrera and eventually the 2004 WS
No question, this led to the title. But, it wasn't the greatest trade. One of the most important.

For example, the Goring trade to the Islanders wasn't monumental or anything. But it did totally push them over the hump into a dynasty. Just what they needed.

IIRC Goring was coach of the Bs for a bit. Gritty dude.

Bill Belichick for a first round pick.
I was thinking about this because I agreed with it . . Obviously we gave compensation for BB, but technically is it really a trade? Honest question, not sure..

To me it is because they had to agree to give a first round pick to get Belichick.

I vote

1A. Belichick
1B. McHale and Parish
1C. Russell

Then there's the would-have-been-greatest-trade ever...

Gerald Henderson for the #1 pick that became Len Bias.

You would think that after picking people's pockets for Russell, McHale, Parish, DJ, and using draft shenanigans to snag Bird and Ainge, someone should have been weary of trading a top #1 for Gerald Henderson, especially in a year in which Len Bias was available.
Bias was the 2nd pick.

The Red Sox trades of Jeff Bagwell for a relief pitcher who quickly ended up out of the league.
And the trade of Curt Schilling (before he returned here) for no one.
The trading away of John Lester and Roger Clemons way too early, as it turned out.

Actually, It was Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson and he was a free agent and chose to sign elsewhere. He wasn't "out of the league".

Schilling and Brady "Steroids" Anderson were traded to the Orioles for Mike Boddiker. Hardly a nobody since he was actually considered a solid #2 starter in the league when the Sox acquired him.

The Red Sox didn't trade away Lester. Lester chose to sign with the Cubs.
The Red Sox didn't trade away Roger Clemens. They let him walk as a free agent.
