OT: Greatest trade in Boston sports history?

Status
Not open for further replies.
The best Bruins one has to be the Espo one or Barry Pederson for Cam Neely and (1st rounder) Glen Wesley. Particularly since they were able to trade Glen Wesley after a long career for Sergei Samsonov, Kyle McLaren, and Jonathan Aitken. And then these players were developed and traded for more players.

So here are all the players we got from that trade and the seasons they played for the Bs.

Cam Neely 10 seasons
Glen Wesley 7 seasons
Kyle McLaren 7 seasons
Sergei Samsonov 8 seasons
Jeff Hackett 1 season
Jeff Jillson 1 season
Brad Boyes 2 seasons
Dennis Wideman 4 seasons
Nathan Horton 3 seasons
Gregory Campbell 3 seasons
Marty Reasoner 1 season
Yan Stastny 2 seasons
Milan Lucic 6 seasons

This is a great thread. So much history. All the memories - Memories of the hearty laughter I shared with my buddy that some team actually gave up young talent for Slocumb. Did they see what we were watching every night? He was horrible in Boston.
And the feeling of loss when Garciaparra was traded.

Russell is first and either Belichick or Pedro second. Those are by far the best three.

The draft pick for Rob Gronkowski was a brilliant series of trades, but I don't think that's what we are going for.

It really speaks volumes to the highway robbery Red committed when trading Rick Robey for Dennis Johnson and Cedric Maxwell for Bill Walton aren't even in the top 3.

I presume your top 3 Red trades are:
  • Russell
  • McHale/Parish
  • McAdoo for the pick that was traded for McHale/Parish

Here's something to consider:

What do the Russell trade and the recent Nets trade have in common? (Answer below)

They both involved trading away 2 HOFers for one or more very high draft picks.

Indeed.

Auerbach also traded for the draft rights to Bill Russell.

He also got Dennis Johnson and Bill Walton via trade, although neither is a serious contender for trade GOATness.

Ainge recently traded for a bunch of Nets picks, not all of which have been used yet. And before that he traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in separate deals.
As concerning the Celtics, you could say that almost any trade that Red made was a great trade. He fleeced the rest of the NBA for years.

Trading away Danny Ainge didn't work out particularly well. But that was right around the end of his tenure.

For a $1m buy out, this guy was a pretty good hitter

The Celtics gave up rick robey for Dennis johnson during the 83 off season. that's a red Auerbach special.

i hated that trade. ed pickny and joe Klein yikes.

the DJ trade won them a banner in 1984. i think it's up there.

One trade got them an important part of DJ's career.
One trade got them all of Russell's career.

Not even close.

Danny Ainge completely fleeced Brooklyn with that Kevin Garnett Paul Pierce trade for 3 first rounders and a bunch of other options. Neither of those guys still play in Brooklyn.

The Celtics trading for McHale and Parish in 1980 has to be near the top of that list.

But we could have had Joe Barry Carroll instead.

Another great Celtics trade, possibly the greatest, was Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan for a guy named Bill Russell. That one worked out okay for the Celts.

I don't blame Red for that one. Red was letting Jan Volk do more on the personnel side. He was clearly out of his depth thus the reason they brought in Dave Gavitt

Pedro Martinez is the greatest pitcher that I've ever seen, and I go back a looooong way.

There have been pitchers who have had great single years but unable to sustain it for several years consecutively.

From 1997 to 2003 - a 7 year stretch, Pedro was better than 1961-1966 Sandy Koufax, which is the standard for dominance.

We will never see that again. Never.
