OT: Games We Played as Kids

We used to play Army with our BB guns. We'd wear helmets and goggles/eye protection, BUT... that was about it. I still have a BB under the skin in my right forearm. You always knew when you got hit.
We did the same thing every July with bottle rockets and sometimes a bit bigger rockets (forget what they were called). Two sides across the park from each other with one upturned picnic table to each side for protection. No rules, no outs. Until one kid lost an ear.

Yard darts
Blew up frogs and fish
Shot at each other with pellet guns
Egg wars Halloween night

I once sent a yard dart into the roof of my neighbors car. Pops was not happy about that one.

Yes....

Jarts (a/k/a lawn darts a/k/a yard darts) was awesome. How we didn't get someone killed with the various permutations we played is something only God can explain.

Rock fights in the park were always fun.

One ripped a hole in my buddys jeans. Didn't need stitches but man there was a ton of blood. Looked like a friggan shark attack. His mom was pissed that he was wearing his school jeans LOL. Never mind the pool of blood.....

We used to play a game where we would run around in the woods. One of us would have a BB gun (Only pumped up once or twice) while the other kids would hide (without protective eyewear of course). Then the guy with the gun would simply try to shoot the other kids. Fun with Guns!

Another (Fun?) game was to have "Roman Candle Wars" where 2 of us would stand 25-30 yards away from one another and shoot Roman Candles at each other as if we were wizards casting fireballs.

My god... its amazing that nobody was every "seriously" hurt. What the hell were we thinking?!

Two games my brother and I played relentlessly after school was Nerf football in the yard during the spring, summer and fall and Ice hockey or Ice football during the winter.

In the Nerf football games we would simply play in a field which was between multiple housing units. If you had the play of the day we would call it the "Monday Nighter" in honor of monday night football. Getting the Monday Nighter play would be accompanied with the rest of the kids singing out the Monday night tune. Duh nuh duh nuh Duh Nuh.

During winter there was a field perfectly located between two of the housing units (one of them mine). We would all take out the garden hoses on a cold night and flood the field which would freeze over night. The next morning we would put on skates and break out a hockey game. Orange pucks for the night games with the porch lights turned on. hahaha

Occasionally we would play Nerf football on the ice rink. Painful stuff there. The "you cheated" fights on the ice rink were pretty entertaining as well.

Good times.

Kick the Can...(played with a ball)
Pom-Pom pull away..
Hotbox..
Rounders Kickball- good for when the entire block wanted to play.
Rainy day games- Risk, Life, & Battleship

Do kids these days even know how to make leaf houses, I wonder? I was born in the 80's.. Doesn't seem all that long ago, but culture & entertainment has changed an incredible amount since then. Beepers/pagers where the "iPhone" when I was a teenager!

Rundowns!!!

Hell Yeah! So simple but so much fun.

Pretty much every game that's remotely popular. The kids in my neighborhoods were almost never in the house.

Same with us. There were a lot more kids too. We had enough kids in the same age groups from just two small streets to play full baseball games. Now you couldn't get more than a handful of kids of any age from either street.

One of my fondest memories as a young man with children was when I kicked a bunch of the local kids out of my house on a nice day. They were laying around playing video games.

We usually had to play with right field as "dead". Good times.

We played "don't trade your best defensive player."

Sorry, I'm struggling, guys.

Anyone here ever play speedball/stickball (drawn strikeout box on wall, tennis ball, hockey stick for "bat")? Only the Lord knows how many tennis balls we lost to school and church roofs.

Yup. We used to use half of one of those pink rubber balls too. Great stuff.

That's right. We also had to do that now and then.

I can still see my glove on the handlebars of my bike and smell the smell of glove oil. Ahhhhh....

Maybe "muckle" was only in RI then! Like coffee milk and a grinder and Italian food.

Autocrat coffee syrup is still on my culinary "must have" list to this day. I've actually got one of the Autocrat beers in my fridge. I'm a bit leery of trying that.
