OT: Favre not coming back

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

Well, it's always best to take Favre at his word.

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

According to PFT and ESPN, Favre told Vikings higher ups that he is not coming back this year, citing wear and tear on his body.

Some things never change

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

Farve really hosed the Vikings waiting this long. He lobbied for LT to join the Vikings. Why do that if youre not coming back?

Minny needs to get Kurt Warner on the phone right away. He'd be a good fit for that offense.

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

Apparently the servers at the Minneapolis Star Tribune have crashed...

Brett is probably just a little down over all the Brady-Manning-Revis contract talk. Maybe he just needs a hug. After all Deanna renewed her health club membership in Minneapolis just last week. Two weeks of unabated Favre watch will probably reel him back in. Somewhere Bus is probably cursing his favorite SOB client, while stiffling a bemused giggle in the process...:ugh:

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

I won't be fully convinced of his retirement until at least a decade passes without him. Seriously.

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

Someone posted the stats one time... I don't think BB has ever lost to Brett Favre.

October 2002, Green Bay smacked the Patriots around in Foxboro.

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

He's upset that we didn't all talk about him enough over the offseason, so he's taking his ball and going home.

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

Florio ain't buyin' it, and he nails the reasons why...

This year, whether he's consciously doing it or not, Favre needs to once again convince us that he won't come back, for two reasons.

First, he needs the Vikings fans to rejoice when Lord Favre rides in on a white steed to save the team from a plunge to black-and-blue mediocrity. And they won't rejoice unless they first believe in their hearts that Prince Graybeard isn't coming.

Second, he needs an excuse for his own potential mediocrity. In his quest to ride off into the sunset with a Lombardi Trophy tucked into the back pocket of his Wranglers, Favre fears embarrassing himself. So if he plays poorly, it can't happen because he's lost his magic. There needs to be a good reason for a Willie Mays/Joe Namath/John Unitas end to his career unrelated to whether Favre can still bring it.

We joked yesterday that maybe he wants more money. Whether he wants it or not, look for the Vikings to throw a few extra million onto the $13 million base salary he's due to earn this year. And look for anyone named Wilf to bend a knee and beg Favre to change his mind.

And then look for Favre to reluctantly comply. Possibly as late as the eve of the start of full-blown preparation for the regular-season opener, making Brett's Third Annual Unretirement the dominant story over Labor Day Weekend.

Heck, it's also possible that he never even goes to Minnesota before joining the team, and that he simply jumps the puddles between Hattiesburg to New Orleans, walks into the locker room, belts out a verse or two of Pants on the Ground, asks for a helmet, slaps a few asses, and tells his teammates that it's time to go take care of unfinished business.

When it happens, it will be dramatic. It will be memorable. It will be great.

That's precisely why Favre has decided to retire now. He knows -- whether he's even able to admit it to himself or anyone else -- that he needs to build the drama. And the drama will indeed build.

Quoting this one only because I don't feel like going back and multi-quoting everyone...

Clearly I was confused I forget what I heard now. It might have been something like Brady has never lost to Favre since 2003, but whatever the case it's a far less impressive stat.

My bad.

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

The amount of idiots on the internet with a bitter twisted attitude to a great, great player is just so sad.

The only reason he has found it hard to retire is a huge hunger to compete. If you don't understand that then you are sad, sad people. He has kept putting off the decision until the last minute because he has been advised by all those around him to retire for a good few years now. This leads to indecision and thats what has been going on with the man. Its got nothing to do with being a media whore like some people suggest. The man will have more time on tv when he does retire as he is guaranteed to be picked up by one of the big networks to cover games in some capacity.

He's a great player who put up great numbers. But if Tom Brady is going to be lambasted for spending time with his children for a few days, because that is such a terrible detriment to building team unity, Brett Favre is going to be held accountable for holding a team in limbo while they make off-season plans.

You're right, he may not be doing this to garner attention. But it's annoying and it doesn't help whatever team he's going to play for. That, and he's overrated...

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

The reason he hasn't retired yet is his hunger to play the game.

The reason there is a soap opera every season for the last 4 or 5 years is Brett loves himself some attention. This is why people get annoyed... he doesn't even change it up a little. Same old same old.

Bingo. And Lord Favre does it as a yearly event, not just one or two moments of indecision which no doubt everyone could understand, his announcements are becoming football tradition with each team he plays for.

I'm with Florio; no worries Brett we didn't forget about you

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

It was probably a push for the secondary either way...

Does he really ascare you??

Uh... YEAH. You'd be kidding yourself if you said that you'd rather face Brett Favre than Tarvaris Jackson.

Actually some pretty solid points there by a guy who is usually a blabbering idiot. But I think Cutler nailed it on the head even more when he told Schefter that there is a reason why Favre is working out right now and throwing footballs to high schoolers in Mississippi. I'll believe he retires when I see it.

Brett Favre had a hell of a year last year and if he comes back, the Vikes are one of the best teams in the NFC, if not the NFL.

As for BB's record against Favre:

Oct 18th, 1992 as the Brown's HC, won 17-6. (GB)
Nov 19th, 1995 as the Brown's HC, lost 31-20. (GB)
Jan 26th, 1997 as the Patriot's AHC, lost 35-21 (Super Bowl). (GB)
Oct 13th, 2002 as the Patriots HC, lost 28-10. (GB)
Nov 19th, 2006 as the Patriots HC, won 35-0. (GB)
Sept 14th, 2008 as the Patriots HC, won 19-10. (Jets)
Nov 13th, 2008 as the Patriots HC, lost 34-31. (Jets)
Oct 31st, 2010 as the Patriots HC, [?] (Vikings?)

So overall, BB has a losing record against Favre or .500 record if you don't count his AHC loss.

Brady's only played Favre twice, losing in 2002 and winning in 2006. We SHOULD have crushed Favre in the 07 SB and had our revenge for the 96 SB, but Favre pulled his NFCCG choke act... grrr.

Don't remind that Favre played significant and indirect roles in ruining 2007 and 2008

Re: OT-Favre not coming back

Bullschit Alert!!!!!!

Chilly is holding a presser and claiming that while Brett may have notified his teamates of his intentions he has made no such call to Childress...

Classic Favre cry for attention.

Even if he retires, I won't believe it. He'll just un-retire to a grand announcement and much fanfare.

Hasn't that already happened?

I'll only believe it when he's dead, at this point. Maybe not even then.
