In terms of race, 400 years of slavery, followed by 150 years of institutionalized oppression, followed by a few decades where we are just beginning to address the issue (at the personal, institutional, and cultural levels) and where it is just now becoming safe for white folks to acknowledge the bigotry in our socialization, and all of this makes sense.

Regarding Obama, I've spent about 45 minutes with him, with a few other people without any particular agenda, and he is one of the most amazing humans I've ever met. The role he played in moving the ball forward in terms of race, and the personal price he paid for it, was a great contribution and sacrifice.

It's a crutch often used to excuse or avoid admitting one's shortcomings. Japan was nuked to the Stone Age and suffered massive civilian losses and economic setbacks as a result. Instead of blaming Americans for those setbacks, they strove to be better and got over it without using that as an excuse. Now they're one of the more powerful and prosperous countries in the world. We will all admit slavery was a terrible thing, but it's over and has been for some time and nobody living on this Earth currently was personally affected by it. A black man is now holding the most powerful office in the world. Does bigotry still exist? Sure. But all races get it. That comes with the territory of being human.

We're at a point in US history where many people's dislike of a public figure can be AMPLIFIED due to prejudice. However, a thankfully smaller fraction of the population dislikes people who, if they were of a different race or sex or whatever, they'd outright like.

In politics, for example, there are lots of reasons in this divided country for people to dislike Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. But the venomous hatred directed at them far exceeds what's been shown for any white male politician of similar leanings.

I'm not discounting racism because I've seen it but it isn't rampant or the criticisms of Barack Obama do not "far exceed" that of a white guy. IMO

Barack Obama, who I unfortunately voted for, received 43% of the white vote which is remarkably consistent when compared to previous elections in which the Democratic candidates were white.

Cam likes being in the limelight which is fine and he is doing good things with his fame on and off the field. His critics are those who don't like loud, "look at me I'm Superman" type guys.

Maybe that should be the response to all the whiners about this season on this forum too "You should get over the Patriots bad O-line play because japan had a pair of atom bombs dropped on it back in 45." If Japan can rebuild itself after having a pair of nukes dropped on it then Belichick should be able to draft a quality wide receiver.

Like the post but the effects of the slave era are still prevalent to this day. Slavery to Segregation to Segregation de facto ...etc.

Then at the end of his term, botched the Katrina relief efforts, and he presided over the greatest financial collapse since the great depression....WTF man? Obama is an American. Just because he has the same skin color as other people doesn't give him some special power over the group of people that also have the same skin color. What about skin color gives people these special powers?

What he did was bring out the haters....which is good. Because the first thing you have to do when you have a problem is to acknowledge that problem. We were in deep denial, but folks are starting to wake up and see....the statistics tell the true story of racism in this country, if you care to look.

It is interesting to me that the majority of slaves transported across the Atlantic Ocean did not wind up in the American Colonies or the U.S. The number one destination was Brazil.

I don't know enough about race relations in Brazil, but a cursory glance at some stats shows me that they the racial makeup is a little more balanced (maybe because Brazil did not have as much European immigration as the U.S. post-slavery: they prohibited immigration by anyone who wasn't Portuguese) Brazil also did not abolish slavery until 1888. So Brazil might be a good place to look for common threads or differences to understand the impact of slavery on race relations.

It's not ridiculous at all. Hate does not erase nor does it rid the world of hate. Dr. King tried to set that example himself and got killed for it. The Japanese are just one such example of a nation and people that was brought to it's lowest point, grew from it, got over it, and prospered to this day. African Americans haveN'T gotten to the point they're at by using the past as a crutch to blame their problems on. They've gotten to the point they're at by leaving it in history and working hard to better themselves and their situations. So if you're going to disagree with me, feel free to do so. But please point out which specific part of this post you disagree with and we can continue the discourse from there.
