As soon as mikey or NEM post something on here you, PNM, are always the first one to play the "No politics in the main forum!" card. And yet you seem to have no problem with this thread on here. Hmmmm....I wonder why...

Clearly, this thread is dripping with political overtone.

I thought this thread should have been posted at the Political forum instead.

(If you want to know whether a discussion is politcal or not, just look for a poster named "Turd Furguson" among those responding.)

I don't see what the big proplem is actually. Larry Bird said that more people would watch the NBA if there were more whites in it.
And let's call a spade a spade. The Winter Olypics are booooring as hell. If most of those events were happening in my backyard I would pull the shades.

Let me state that Merriam-Webster's definition of 'caucasian' is mutually exclusive of my usage of Orient/Occident.

Further, Orient/Occident are historical demographic references for peoples based upon from which hemisphere they are indigenous to. Eastern hemispheric peoples were considered Oriental. And while not commonly used, western hemispheric races were considered Occidental.

In closing, there are countless regions and races that are not accounted for by terms such as Oriental, Occidental, African, Caucasoid, Negroid, etc.

Back in the 80's when the Celts were the kings of Boston sports, someone pointed out that the black kids in the city were wearing team colors other than the Celtics. I remember one of the kids saying the inner city kids couldn't identify with the white Celtics. The same thing is happening today, white fans can't identify with the current game (playground ball) or the black players.

It's just the way it is. We gravitate towards those we identify with.

He thinks blacks are greater athletes than a bunch of Scandinavians, and to be fair it's hard to argue against the "great black athlete" theory. "The great black athlete" has certainly taken over American sports, so maybe it's a shock to for Gumble to watch something different.



Well, that's just the point: Jimmy the Greek or Campaneris say something about Blacks being superior athletically, and Jesse Jackson wants to lynch them -- and does, by taking away their jobs. Gumbel says it and his very fat paychecks just keep on going into his bank account.

Wasn't that something? I sat there watching him flush millions in endorsements down the drain and I wondered what is his problem? He's obviously not a team player and in it entirely for himself. So what else is new in Olympic sports. But that boulder sized chip on his shoulder and the manic moodiness is liable to make him nothing more than a passing footnote in Olympic Winter Sports history. And that's certainly not going to entice droves of young black athletes onto the ice. Why would they want to do something that makes you so unhappy as well as apparently unpopular. He'll have no one to blame but himself when all the speed skating attention and endorsement opportunities go to the gold medal winning affable redneck from Texas or the gold medal winning blonde North Carolinian who has donated all his Olympic winnings to an African charity. LOL

BTW - Sponsors have already stepped up to match Cheek's donations to that sports based charity to the tune of $300K.

"The great black athlete" has certainly taken over American sports, so maybe it's a shock to for Gumble to watch something different. The Winter Games are a bit of a joke anyway. Curling and the X-Games are two of the sports Americans are best at and they're both prominently featured at Torino.

What on earth is this concept of the "great athlete"? There are great soccer players, great runners, jumpers, swimmers and so on. Is Ted Washington a "great athlete"? I don't think he'd excel in any sport except one (well, maybe Sumo and shot-putting). But who cares. And who is the "greater athlete", Michael Vick or Tom Brady? 'nuff said.

I actually think this whole talk of someone as a "great athlete" independent of the sport they pursue is pretty dubious -- potentially even racially insulting. It reduces sportsmen and women to their physical/genetic endowment, independent of their skills and training.

I can think of a million good reasons not to watch the Winter Olympics -- it's just that there not being enough blacks and hence that they don't have the greatest athletes isn't one of them.
