LONDON (AP) — British author Richard Adams, whose 1972 book "Watership Down" became a classic of children's literature, has died, according to his daughter. He was 96.

Juliet Johnson told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Adams died in Oxfordshire, England on Christmas Eve after getting progressively weaker in recent weeks.

"He died of what used to be called old age," she said, adding that her father also suffered from a blood disorder.

Adams' lyrical and poignant novel about the plight of rabbits whose home was under threat became an astonishing success after it was published. Popular with both children and adults, it has since sold millions of copies and was made into a film, with a remake scheduled for next year.

That book was a childhood favorite of mine. He has left a gift for generations of children to come. Thank you, sir, Godspeed, and may the Lord rest and keep your immortal soul.
 
My favorite quote from the beginning of Watership Down, and it applies to the Pats too...
"All the world will be your enemy, prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you they will kill you. But first they must catch you..."
 
i just read Watership Down this year for the first time with my 8-year-old. Tales of Watership Down was good too. what a great story-teller he was.

i just read Watership Down this year for the first time with my 8-year-old. Tales of Watership Down was good too. what a great story-teller he was.

I haven't read that book in years, but I think I can understand what you wrote. I know what hraka is.
 
reading various stories about adams, i discovered that the BBC and netflix are producing a 4-part miniseries of Watership Down which is set to air next year. i'm looking forward to watching it with my kids. it will be a timely tribute to adams.
 
The Girl in the Swing is a pretty dang suspenseful story.

For someone who didn't "get going" until he was in his 50's, he was an excellent storyteller and a good writer.

His daughters convinced him to write his story of Watership Down. Big animal lover.

96 is just too young to go.

Tough year for celebrities, and the only I actually wanted to die is still with us.

Is that too harsh?
