Re: One post-XLII Jimmie Johnson comment to consider

49ers and Dolphins fans know their teams blow, and will admit as much. I was in Illinois when the season ended for da Bears and there was a ridiculous amount of unwarranted confidence in their abilities to win a championship this upcoming season. In short, they are delusional.

But we all know they're going to suck. Muahaha.

Yeah, the point being is that Dolphins fans can't really stick "17-0" or Bears fans can't stick "18-1 with Lombardi" in your face when their team is in the dumpster.

But had Brady been Brady, it would never have come down to that in the first place.

Yup.

It's just that after seeing the drive he put together just before it - it gave me a lot of hope. I think the two things worse then seeing Plax in the endzone were Tuck's monster hit on Brady and the final fourth down attempt.

Undoubtedly, the SB42 loss will always cause me to have a nauseous feeling, but IMO it is still too fresh. When( I do believe) the Pats hoist a fourth and possibly fifth Lombardi Trophy, the SB42 loss will become a mere, "aw shucks..you can't win 'em all" memory for me.

Time heals all wounds.

Time and a few more super bowls will sure heal this one.

Two more Superbowls will enable this team to be called the greatest dynasty of all time.

That will sure be good enough for me.

That is all there is to it.

This is the goal here. Add some youth to that D and this team is well on the way.

I don't remember much of that postgame show since I avoided the TV for the most part, but I do remember those comments by Jimmy Johnson. Didn't help much, but still, it provides some hope.

BTW, 18-1 is only a punchline if there isn't a SB title attached to it. The '85 Bears can attest to that.

Re: One post-XLII Jimmie Johnson comment to consider

I am confused, neither is acceptable, but exactly how is 16 and one better. Is it along the lines of it is better to have loved and lost , then to have never loved at all... just wondering.

Winning all in the regular season the being knocked off by the first "good" team in the Playoffs is technically worse.

I agree with you, though, all suck.

Personally I'm hoping for owner discord and backing out of the CBA leading to a faction leaving the NFL. (Large market or small market, whatever.)

Of course the teams that leave are accused of tampering/ Satanic rituals/ etc.

How about a re-match next year? We win by 49? Am I reaching here?? I'm still sad. Very sad.

Are you kidding? we would be 1-1 against them. The high score would emphasize what should have happened.

All in all, it sure as hell beats the era of watching them go 1-15 and 2-14!

I'd be careful healing wounds on the promise of something that's never guaranteed.

I've gotten over the game simply by looking ahead to 2008. Living in the past (be it good memories or bad) is never the answer.

Of course there are no guarantees....however, with Tom Brady & BB/SP and Kraft's ownership......smart money says multiple Superbowl WINS lie ahead!!

I do agree that the bright future sure does help to get over that game.

Considering the outcome of the last 3 years would you bet big money that we win multiple Super Bowls? I would be very thankful if we got one more.

EDIT: go back 3 years after the Pats won SB39 - if someone said:

"....with Rothleisberger, Cowher & Rooney..." or
"....with Peyton, Dungy & Irsay...." or
"....with Eli, Coughlin & Mara.....smart money says a Lombardi in 3 years!"

you'd probably laugh at them. The Pats' organization is built for success, but there's a certain motivation that drives every championship team to prevail, and ours hasn't been enough to become a champion of late. I can say without hesitation that (barring a major injury) the Pats are a perennial playoff team. After that? Well, I believe all teams define themselves in the playoffs.

What's wrong with remembering the past victories and believing your team will win again? I like to think that the past successes the Patriots have achieved along with the near misses helps to define this franchise as one of the all-time greats. I believe that because the way this team has won in the past, even with the playoff losses the last few years, that it will ultimately help them win another one, if not two more. There is no substitute for experience. Throw in some hungry veterans with some ****y youth and this team will win another Lombardi.

I think BB will get over it, he is a remorseless coaching machine, much like a great white shark. I often wonder if he enjoys the process as much as the outcome, my sense is that he enjoys the grind but then again 19-0 would have been a pretty nice feather in his cap.

I was thinking of Jimmy Johnson before the Superbowl, he always had his teams fired up and ready to go. I was hoping he would give a pre-game speech to the Patriots, old school, fire and brimstone, 'you are the best, this is your density, etc.'

Not that getting all fired up matters, I remember watching the Eagles going crazy before the kickoff. I watched them and though, what the hell are those idiots doing... they are going to burn out. When the interviewed Strahan right before the kickoff on he was super calm it was a bad omen, it meant the Giants were able to relax ad mist all the pressure.

I think that the BS media hype sort of made the Pats soft.

They excpected the win.

The very same thing that the Rams thought.

We are the best. We don't even need to play the game. Just give us the rings already.

Don't believe the hype... don't believe it at all...

What's wrong with remembering the past victories and believing your team will win again?

My issue with it (and I had to learn this the hard way) is that you'll never appreciate the victories as much if you somehow think they are "supposed" to win and if the Pats do lose, it makes it all the more difficult to deal with. Why was the Indy AFC title game so bad? Because we lost to a guy that used to hand over his lunch in the playoffs, and we believed history would repeat itself. But it didn't. Why was SB42 so bad? Because we had won 18 and thought it guaranteed a 19th (or the fact that Brady/BB were back in the SB- sure thing, right?).

The most enjoyable games I've watched were the ones where the Pats supposedly had no chance, and I believed they had a chance, not based on past wins, but just pure optimism. That's what made the Jax playoff game fun, because a lot of mediots were on their bandwagon all week.

Going into 2008, I believe anything is possible for the Patriots, be it good or bad, and I just have to appreciate the good and not let the bad get me down.
