Re: One football experts analysis of Matt Cassel

There is a very limited sample on Cassel but you cant argue that almost every time he has been in a game be it preseason or regular, something bad seems to happen. even the fumble was a play he could have made.

Yes for us there is a very limited sample.

However, the expert whose opinion many of you dismiss out of hand has had a thousand more times to observe his play and make an intelligent judgment then anyone on this board.

The writers who follow football every day in this town has included a not so illustrious group. You saw recently what the clowns at PFW hire. The dean of Boston football writers before his retirement was Kevin Mannix who deemed the trade for Belichick the acquisition of duplicitous pond scum. He then drafted that stiff Seymour when he could have had a WR if he only knew how on the mark Borges opinions are...And Borges and Cafardo wailed as a HOF'er was traded to a division rival as some flash in the pan kid who could only dink and dunk was given the starting job here. Which was going to lead to no one wanting to play here for the cheap liar that BB is... Then of course there was the little matter of the Soxaholic Herald beat writer reporting on the existence of a walk through tape... And senior correspondent Felger told us all what to expect with Randy Moss because he's a dog and only plays when he wants to...

When your opinion is being bolstered by media read or spin or opinion in this town it's usually a bad sign for your opinion.

If someone who followed the team constantly sid that the other 10 players were hopeless and made the QB look bad. I'd take it into consideration.

I differ with writers all the time, but I don't think all the writers and coaches know far less than me.

Re: One football experts analysis of Matt Cassel

"Watching Matt and hearing the criticism on TV, I don't even know where that was coming from, that was so far from what I was watching.

The quarterback, there is a lot of responsibility out there. I thought Matt was making good decisions. He was really decisive with his throws. Was every throw perfect? No, but that doesn't happen so often anyway.

I have seen Matt in practice and the improvement he makes. I love what I see from Matt. I have a lot of confidence in Matt."

This above opinion was based on pre-season. Having seen him play against KC, I am agreeing more and more with this expert.

So is anyone ready to agree with this pre-season assessment by Tom Brady many of you dismissed?

What does Brady know compated to Briz, Wendel and the 75% of Patsfans here who polled said that Cassel would be CUT after camp?

Re: One football experts analysis of Matt Cassel

What's the infatuation over these old threads? During the pre-season Cassel had stretches when he looked good, mediocre, and bad.

No doubt some looked at some of his games and failed to recognize a good performance disguised as a mediocre one (I'm thinking of the game where he went 6 for 10, which some took as a mediocre performance - but there were three dropped passes, so he easilly could have/should have been 9-10)

But based on his performance one could credibly assume we had a mediocre backup QB on our hands - and there was a natural concern expressed by the fans as to how the team would do should the unthinkable happen and Brady went down.

Did Belichick share any of those concerns, or was he so sold on Cassel that he wasn't going to take a look at the veteran QBs who were available after the cuts?

We know now that he had in fact called them in for a visit - but cancelled the tryouts after Brady went down, recognizing that the situation had changed and that he'd need to rely on Cassel given his knowledge of the offense and the fact that a veteran QB couldn't get up to speed quick enough to be a help, and could only undermine Cassel's confidence in the meantime.

So make of all that what you will - but let's not try to convince ourselves in retrospect that had proven he was going to be as good as he has been with his play during the pre-season. Just the opposite - his performance in the pre-season suggested he was a mediocre QB.

Asks the gentleman who posts a five hundred word response to an old, bumped thread.
