McCourty was 32 when he got a two-year extension that was among highest paid safeties. Why make that deal if a traditional age cutoff automatically means you shouldn't give someone big money? It's fine if you think Gilmore was no longer worth that money, but merely being 31/rebuild is a contradiction of the way the team just handled a similar situation.
I don't see those two situations as the same. Gilmore is probably asking for a lot more than McCourty got, and McCourty plays the position that cornerbacks traditionally convert to when they're old whereas Gilmore plays cornerback.

Yeah. We saw a guy run right by hightower and collins get juked by Hebert.. So we shouldn't go thinking Carolina is an easy out. Our defense against the run has been pretty awful..
WOW.. Nothing like re-writing what happened.

Jackson juked Hightower and half the defense. That's why he was able to get the 75 yards. We won't talk about the holding the Chargers did on the O-line on that play.

Hebert didn't juke anything. He just stepped up in the pocket away from Collins. Collins was a f'in joke and just walked by Hebert..

Actually, the defense against the run had been better the previous 2 games.

And both games with Buffalo remaining. Division championship is definitely within reach.

I'll bet that Buffalo wishes they had played the Pats at the beginning of the season rather than the end. The Pats are starting to get their shyt together and may start breaking hearts in December.

Safeties have a longer shelf life than CB's in general, which is why many corners convert to safety in the latter parts of their career.
That has some truth to it. Looking at CBs that made multiple first team All Pros in the last 20 years there is a pattern of their performance falling off once they pass the age of 30/31:

Richard Sherman - Managed a bounceback season with the 49ers at age 31 in 2019 before struggling with injuries in 2020. Looks like a shell of himself now as he tries to work back into shape with the Bucs
Patrick Peterson - Hasn't been All Pro caliber since 2018, now more or less an average CB at age 31
Aqib Talib - Had his final lockdown corner season at age 31, looked average while struggling with injuries in his last two years with the Rams before calling it quits
Darrelle Revis - Was getting burned a lot during his second season after his return to the Jets while age 31. Called it quits after a brief cameo the following year with the Chiefs in 2017.
Ty Law - Had a terrific season in his first year away from the Pats in 2005 at age 31. Bounced around between the Chiefs, the Jets and the Broncos in subsequent years.
Nnamdi Asomugha - Never lived up to the hype after joining the Eagles at age 30. Out of the league three years later.

Of course there are also a couple of exceptions, mainly Charles Woodson who had some of his best years when he was approaching 35 or Champ Bailey who managed a high level of production up until his final season when he dropped off a cliff at age 35. So it can't be automatically ruled out that Gilmore won't be able to produce at a high level. However, depending on what Gilmore was asking for an extension (e.g. continue getting paid like an All Pro) it can be understandable that the Pats didn't want to match his demands. Although I still wish they managed to find a way to keep him on the roster this year instead of trading / cutting him.

That's happened a lot to Mac this season with these receivers who need to be always aware of what Mac might do. Even Damien Harris failed to look at Mac on the screen play last week even though he had as blocker in front of him.

A lot of new pieces on offense. They are coming together but we see when they stumble.

LOL. This is probably just chirping right back at JC Jackson.

We've been hearing this from opposing players, coaches, media personalities, and fans (including our own) for 20 years, while the Patriots have been averaging near or at top of the league in points allowed for two decades. The style of defense they play, with its multiple looks and bend don't break philosophy doesn't make what they're doing obvious. And if it were a game or two, you could call it smoke and mirrors, but after 20 years you have to acknowledge that just because you can't see the impact of what they're doing doesn't mean it was all luck or the opponents screwing up.

Chiefs will win that division after all. Raiders are more of a threat than the Chargers. And Brady should be glad he didn’t pick those losers…he would have made them better but not close to where Tampa Bay is.

Our schedule gives us a strong chance to finish the season on a winning streak. Bye week not being til week 14, followed by @Indy before hosting Buffalo for the 2nd time in 3 games. The Pats have to keep taking care of business and win the games they're supposed to, but if we're at 7-6 or 8-5 at the bye there's a good chance they can make a last minute push for a playoff spot--wildcard or division champs

I didn't see a rotation of Herron for Wynn.
Rotation obviously has a wide range of definition from "more than one" to "fifty-percent". One of the holding penalties was when he was in for Wynn at LT vice as an additional lineman. I haven't re-watched, but he did take some of those eight snaps as an extra OL and some as the LT.

Mac didn’t loose the game which is the key in these tight games. Was he at his best? No he wasn’t but he didn’t loose the game and when it came down to it to make those important throws on the last drive he nailed them. He is a rookie and not every game is he gonna be perfect but the most encouraging thing for me was he didn’t hesitate to throw the deep pass when he started missing them. I’d rather he overthrow it then under thrown it and it get picked.

I said before the red zone play calling at the 1-5 yard line was utterly bizarre. Run Harris down there. Also if we are going to throw fades down there it should be to Harry he has the size and we saw he can make those type of catches.
The great quarterbacks that I have watched over the years can be having an off day, but when the chips are down in a close game, they usually put things together and pull out a win.

Run Harris down there.
I find quite amusing that when they run in the red zone there are many posts saying "what's wrong with McD, they need to pass it" and when they pass in the red zone "what's wrong with McD, they need to run in the red zone."

Can we just change it to "damn it McD, ONLY call plays that work!"? Cut out the worry of having to remember whether the complaint was "run" or "pass" last week.

Our defense against the run has been pretty awful..
???

When they've schemed to take away the run - they have, but they don't most of the time. The majority of the time they play lighter with only 2 DL to make the passing game more difficult to execute.

Other than maybe the Saints game - what other games have been lost purely on the back of run defense failure? There are plenty of weaknesses across this team, but run defense isn't one of them when they make it a scheme focus.
