Yesterday was more on the LB's. Mack Wilson got benched and Tavai took over and wasn't effective. I think our d-line has been playing pretty well so far.
All game situations are not equal. We were running successfully for quite a bit of the game. On that drive, GB had to defend 10 yards or it was a loss for them. The box was stacked. Their attitude was clearly that the only way the Patriots were getting into FG range was in the air by a 3rd string QB. Given those circumstances, it should have been clear that they were not going to be allowed to run it 3 times for a first down. It wasn't happening on that drive in that game scenario.
So Zappe was going to have to throw it once. A first or 2nd down play action is much much more likely to be successful than 3rd and long.
I would rather take the chance and lose that take the safe loss while hoping for a tie.
Agreed, though our d put forth a valiant effort you had to figure giving rodgers a THIRD chance to win this game with just a fg would be a deathblow. We had to score there at any cost and a punt is though not AS bad as a turnover essentially is ending the game anyway
I think Bill thought that would be giving GB too good field position if they didn't get it, and the defense was playing well enough that he may have thought they had a decent chance to get the ball again.
We weren't picked to win it would have been a gutsy move that I wouldn't have questioned. We have a very good kicker got to play to win we had em you can't give the reining MVP the Ball back there.
The defense has been one of the bright spots this year (and last). I don't know if it's him or Mayo and I don't really care as long as they keep it up.
I think he’s a good young coach. But if I were him..I’d go to a different program for a few years to gain an outside perspective..then he can always come back later. Will make him a better wiser coach

The defense had stopped them once in OT. We saw Harbaugh play to win and ended up costing the game. I don't blame Bill for trying to give his team more chances.
Lets be fair, we took Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to OT. We were heavy underdogs and did not see one NFL "expert" giving us a chance... and that was with our 2nd string QB. We were down to our 3rd string QB and still managed to hang in the game.
Not the result we wanted, but I think Pats have something to be proud of/build off. I thought play-calling was great, although conservative, but its very hard to get a 3rd string QB comfortable with the offense in that short amount of time, so I am fine with the "conservative" approach... It worked all game but we came up a little bit short.
What worries me most is our Run D (particularly at LB), Isiah Wynn, Punting was a mixed bag, and QB play. Despite the rhetoric out there, I still think coaching is an advantage for the Pats.
Don't get me wrong. Passing with the 3rd string QB is a risk. Of course. Run, run, pass was a surefire recipe to give the game to GB. I would rather give the young QB a fighting chance. Wasn't interested in a tie.
True, but at least pull out the best stretch run or even a RPO there (Zappe can run). Or a RB screen (which they did almost none of). The point is, you have to surprise and change the look somehow in that situation to win. 2 A-gap runs in a row with a stacked box is not going to cut it.
On a side note why was the hunter Henry , Jonnu thread closed ? I felt it was good point to debate , along with Tavai, Myles Bryant and Wynn . So much money on two players who hardly move anything .
Maybe just makes sense to get a middling tight end veteran on 4- 7 million a year and roll it in with 3rd and 4th round picks on tight ends. W were the only team who are unable to develop a tight end after Gronk. Gronk is a HoF player who just fell into our lap and we got lucky . But the playcalling or ability to develop tight ends is severely missing with us.

This was the best game as a team that the Pats have played this year. The offense is showing some progression and the defense shut down Rodgers for a large portion of the game. I liked the coaching much better in this game than any game this season on both sides of the ball.
Jack Jones has the potential to be a special CB, but the guy has to learn he doesn't need to make a turnover on every play. He is a turnover machine, but he needs to learn how to play the position better. He doesn't need to try to jump every route because sometimes you are going to give up a huge play if you do it at the wrong time. And he doesn't like to tackle and rather than try to strip the ball on every play. The problem is he gives up another five yards trying to strip the ball and is unsuccessful at it. Don't want to pile on the guy because overall he had a great game, but he needs to get more discipline. Until he does, he can be as much of a liability as an asset. It seemed like his early success turning over the ball went to his head and he believed he could turn over the ball on every play.
Patricia finally called a good game. I joked in the game thread that it took Jones and Hoyer to go down for him to realize that he has two stud RBs. Took Bailey Zappe for Patricia to remember to use the run to set up the pass and use things that Jones is very good at like RPOs. I hope this is a learning experience for Patricia for when Mac returns to the line up. That said, he was way too conservative in overtime.
Marcus Cannon is the new starting RT. He played like he did several years ago here which is solid. Wynn is just not good. He can learn from Cannon on the bench. Cannon coming in seemed to make the entire like play better. Strange also had a very good game yesterday.
I don't get what happened to Wynn. He was never a great tackle, but was serviceable, Now he isn't even a speed bump for defenders route to sack the QB. Not the way to play in a contract year.
Zappe is still very raw, but he does have a lot of assets to be a very good QB. He clearly isn't there yet. But for a guy who played in Western Kentucky against the talent he played against, it was a good start. And no, he isn't in contention to take Mac Jones' starting spot. That is silly at least at this point. It is funny, you combine Jones' smarts with Zappe's physical ability and you would have an elite QB.
The special teams is night and day from last year. Obviously Jake Bailey is healthy again and back into his All Pro form. Marcus Jones is a very good returner. Schooner made an excellent tackle with a questionable horse collar tackle call. Would have been a huge tackle otherwise. Special teams was a liability last year. This year it has been an asset.
I like that the Pats showed that they can play man defense. That was a big question mark going into this season. The CB is in far better shape than most people thought it could be and the Pats shut down Rodgers' receivers in the first half. The Packers' receivers are not nearly as good as some of the receivers the Pats will face this season, but it is a positive step forward.

Frustrating. Happy that we played so well. But 1st & 10 from the 50, you HAVE to find a way to get one first down to win the game. There's not many games where the path to victory is that clear.

Hated the Wynn pick at the time we should have passed on his Fifth year option. It's sad to say we didn't do it but they were signs. I'm sure BB pukes ever time he things of the Wynn-Lose situation. Wynn will be a cheap journey man signing going forward because he's so limited and injury proned.
Just curious, if we did the play action on 1st down and Zappe ended up throwing an int, how could you justify that , especially since we were running the ball down their throats all game. I get the runs weren't sexy, but I don't want to put the ball in the kids hands at that point against a great defense. Just my two cents.
