It is clear that Patricia has a different playbook for Jones and Zappe. And I don't get why they won't run the Zappe plays for Jones.

Bedard has a similar report that people around the league are saying the same things. He takes it a step far that I am not willing to go that Patricia and Judge may be trying to sabotage Jones to get Zappe on the field, but he is hearing the same thing as Perry that there are clearly two playbooks. One for Jones and one for Zappe and Zappe has the better plays.

And it is clear the Bears, as this video stated, had a book on Zappe and knew how defend him. Hence why they didn't even bother to prepare to play him this week and spent all their time preparing for Mac Jones. And if Perry's Bears' sources are right, the Bears didn't come into this game with much respect for Zappe either.

@Dingleberry Here are the screen shots from the end zone. The first one is at 7 second where Zappe releases the ball.

I looked at the sideline view of the coaches tape, but Meyers is too blurry to tell if his head is turned at the time of release.




This one is at 8 seconds when Meyers comes into the screen and his head is already turned around.

We are doing more work on the bears in this thread than the patriots coaches did.

He's having a bad season so far throwing the ball (57.4 completion percentage, 173 yards per game), even worse running with 15 carries for 43 yards. He has a gimpy knee, they're not going to try turning him into a running threat. And with Hall shelved, the onus has shifted to Punky's arm to generate points. The Patriots know what he does, if they don't bottle him up I'll be surprised.

Bedard cited the opinion of two “league sources “. Being a BSJ subscriber for a few years now and guessing who some of his sources “in the building” have been over that time, I’ll bet a few bucks one of those now “league sources” might be a former long-standing Patriots’ assistant coach. One who’s quite familiar the former Pats offensive system and, perhaps, has an axe to grind against Matt Patricia, Joe Judge and, perhaps, Bill himself although all appearances must be kept for the sake of the Family.

Bedard’s not talking out his arse. Until training camp this year, he was very much a defender of Bill in most things. Yes, it’s possible he’s being manipulated by his source(s). But, I think he’s just calling a shet show a shet show.

You have to be a blind fool with a heavy emphasis on the fool part to like how Mac Jones was treated last night and to think any good will come from it. This is coming from someone who wants the Pats to ride the Zappe train as far as it takes us. But, fair is fair.

Please don't tell me you're comparing McMilfson with Fields, they have vastly different skill sets. Fields' game is built around both designed running plays and rushing from the pocket, Punky doesn't do that. He scrambles around a lot behind the LOS but is not a serious running threat by design or intent. He has only 15 rushing attempts this season for 42 yards, a 2.8 average. If he has a great day running the ball I'll jump off the nearest bridge.

Without realizing that they aren't gonna be really be great. At best they'll be Tannehill/Carr tier, which isn't even going to be enough to win against the big boys.

More likely they'll be Kirk Cousins tier.

I agree about the defense.

Regarding Mac, if he was "significantly less than 100%" then he shouldn't have been dressed, never mind starting the game. If Belichick used this game as an opportunity to "get Mac some playing time" then that's really dumb as well. The main point of these games is to win them. And if this season has shown us anything across the league, it's that no opponent can be taken for granted. I think Chicago sucks and Fields is a bust but the actual Patriots team (coaches and players) has a responsibility to maximize their preparation and plan to beat their opponent. Mac can get his reps in practice if that's where he's at. I don't need Mac on the field during any actual game if he's less than 100%, especially when there's a better option in Zappe.

Any "plan" of rotating quarterbacks during a game at the NFL level is a really bad plan.

I agree that the treatment of Mac was ugly, unnecessarily so, both on Bill's and on the fans' part. I favor Zappe, but there was no justification for treating Mac that way. That said, it will be telling to see whether Mac goes into some emotional swan dive, or man's up and does better. That may well be what Bill wants to see. Bill is thoroughly and coldly Machiavellian, so that wouldn't surprise me.

No we don't want to have Jones running an offense that is designed for him throw a lot down the field but doesn't allow the receivers to get open because the routes and plays are unimaginative and predictable. There are far too many plays that have him throwing 50-50 balls to the perimeter.

It isn't that they dumbed down the offense for Zappe (which they did the first two games). In fact, some of the routes are more creative. They just run a lot of plays to allow receivers to get open and to give Zappe time in the pocket. Despite the one pass to Parker, they are not asking Zappe to throw a lot of 50-50 balls.

Zappe plays a lot under center with play action which slows down the rush and allows receiver a better opportunity to get open. Jones rarely plays under center even on running plays. And one of the two times they had him do play action last night was out of shotgun and not under center which doesn't sell the run as much as it would under center.

Could it be that you're saying Matt Patricia becomes a 'worse playcaller' with Mac Jones? LOL. So is it the QB or the 'offensive assistant' at fault?

Seeing the genuine happiness on Mac's face for Zappe and the team when Zappe scored immediately coming off the bench made me a bigger Mac fan. I still lean Zappe though.

I 100% believe Patricia is sandbagging Mac with the play calls. That's the only thing that can explain Mac's poor performance. Nothing else makes any sense. Mac would have a 100+ rating in every one of his games if it wasn't for Patricia (& Judge, he's in on the conspiracy) sabotaging our 1st rounder. I think they despise him, and just like Patricia did with Butler, he got Mac benched.

OTOH, if Zappe was running the plays called for Mac, his rating would be worse than Mac's. For sure. Playing 100% out of the shotgun like he did in college in 686 attempts would discombobulate him to the point he would melt down into a crying little boy (he is very tiny).

Question is how do we fix this conspiracy? Is Bill in on it? I wonder.

By the way did you know that over the past 7 seasons, Kirk Cousins has thrown for over 4000 yards 6 times and has thrown for at least 25 TDs in all 7 of those seasons, and was named to 3 Pro Bowls?

Play action is specifically designed to trick the defense to bite on the run. If the defense does the way it is designed, it will slow the rush because the rushers will slow up to try to stop the run and the coverage may bite on the run and give up coverage on the receiver. By design a play action play is done specifically to give the QB an extra beat in the pocket and the receivers an extra step on the the coverage. So they are depriving Mac of that benefit by running it like 1/4 of the time they have been running it for Zappe.

Mac has missed open receiver this year. Far more than he should. There is no denying that. He has also had to deal with more pressure, tighter coverages, and been asked to throw down the field far more.

And it could be a third thing. Patricia and Judge are giving Jones the offense they want to run even though Jones and talent around him are not prepared to run it. And then they "dumb it down" for Zappe because he is a rookie with limited skills.

Is this a PA from UC? Designed to get the receiver open, correct? The play you've been crying about that Mac doesn't get to execute? Is this dumbed down enough for Mac? What happened here? Please explain. Was Patricia sabotaging Mac here?

If Zappe plays and as he gets more comfortable, we can incorporate more intermediate/deep routes. If opposing DLs are going to give up the rush and just put their arms up, that comes with negatives too and provides more time for to go down the field. Getting hands up in the passing lanes worked last night in Zappe's 4th game of action, but it is definitely not a given way to shut down a short quarterback IF that short quarterback has other strong attributes (e.g. ability to see the field, pocket awareness, accuracy). Sooner or later we'll see if Zappe has those attributes to make up for his size.

Here's the same against CLE. Again, he's mainly out of the shotgun. There's a PA from the shotgun that he completes beautifully.



Zappe is very comfortable playing out of the shotgun. That's all he did in college. They're just working him into PA UC to get him used to it.

It was his worst pick yet, and he knew it. But when the things that were mentioned happen constantly, and you are supposed to move the ball, frustration sets in and a highly competitive person will often do such things. Look at the first two plays, where runs went for no gain. We were supposed to be able to run against them. We couldn't. He's had way too many drops and fumbles after a catch too. His long pass to TT that just went off his fingertips was 6 inches too far, and he was hit by 2 linemen less than 2 sec after the snap so he had to rush the throw. His first pass was a bullet that went for a first down, but a penalty nullified it. Stop those things and he should improve. The defense had far too many injuries to top players to be effective. FB is won and lost in the trenches, and when your best DL is out, well....The bears had no one out injured as far as I know. Bad situation to start with. We have to get our injured back. Going to be grim if we don't.

They mentioned during the broadcast many times how many different Centers the Bears were working with, along with other issues they’ve had along the line. Though Barmore has improved as of late, let’s not act like he’s some run stuffing juggernaut. Injuries to Duggar & Philips definitely didn’t help, but I’m not too sure they would’ve made that much of a difference. The DL looked like it was playing on skates. Judon is all-in on the rush most plays, always giving up contain. Last week he played smart, held the edge, and it was one of the best games he’s had. This wk, he once again went all out on the pass rush, and got exploited several times for it. The team got out coached and out played. That’s all there is to it.

You know being a **** does make you smart or clever as you think it does. I think we all have enough experience with guys on internet message boards to know the guys who spend their time attacking people who spend their time attacking people who they don't like or agree with with constant with sarcasm and personal attacks are just overcompensating for their own miserable life.

I am trying to be nice to you because I know Monday night was tough for you because your Zappe for starting QB desire took a huge hit. But I think I am done humoring you. Feel free to continue to act like an ass.

That's why I don't give credence to his assessment that they are sabotaging Jones, but he is far from the only one who is saying there are two different playbooks for the two QBs. And he does break down film very well.
