Player Signing OFFICIAL - Gonzo signed to extension

There’s been no proof of us showing cheap tendencies since Bill left. In fact, quite the opposite. It was always overblown.
No, that situation existed for decades.

Kraft defers more than almost any team.

I am glad that they didnt break the mold for him, just the bank.

Being the highest paid CB is deserved, what had me worried was the "tied to Cap" type contracts which would be too much. But this I like!

Congrats G0nzo!

So, $156M over 6 years, $26M AAV, not breaking the bank. negotiated again after 4.

That cheap bastard Robert Kraft cheaps out again.

Reiss has some good insights in his analysis, as usual.

Gonzalez and his team used … leverage points. The willingness to assume some injury risk and draw it out, when the Patriots were initially more of the aggressor in conversations going back to the spring, was a notable strategy.
This should be tattooed on the forehead of everyone claiming the Pats should have resigned Gonzo early, to remind them that the team tried, and it was the player that dragged it out to milk everything he could from the deal.

As a full participant in training camp, Gonzalez … raised the level of everyone around him, taking care of business -- on and off the field.
Gonzo demonstrated his value as a leader creating the kind of team culture Vrabes wants, and he got rewarded for it. This is part of what earned him the big payday. Holding out would not have been as good.

This is a statement type re-signing for the Patriots, ... QB Drake Maye is eligible for an extension next offseason.
Hopefully things don’t get this fraught with Drake, but don’t be surprised and upset if it does. It takes a lot to wring every last dime out of a multimillion dollar contract, if that’s what the player is committed to doing. I don’t expect it’s likely with Maye, but it’s certainly possible.

I’m curious how much of it is tied into a signing bonus (paid now) vs guaranteed salary or guaranteed option bonuses (paid later at designated times). Reportedly, that was a point of contention and it will be interesting to see where things landed.

Still, good to see him back for a normal figure that is where you’d expect it to be and still makes him the highest paid. Now, this defense should really be locking teams down this season.

Btw, I edited the thread title for clarity.

Maye’s demeanor just doesn’t strike me as a “bleed the team for every last dime” type of player but who knows. If it happens, it happens. But it would be great if he was the rare player to not be pushing for a record-setting contract. Could also see him being willing to structure it in a way where it lends itself to being re-done repeatedly along the way to help the team competitively and financially, like Mahomes’ contract. Long deal with a big figure attached but ultimately not that lucrative per year and the monetary structure is ripe for pushing around/back by adding more years every few years.

Perfect.
Just slightly more than the recent record.
And he’ll hit free agency again at 28.
