Careful with generalizations...there's a first for EVERYTHING.

Again, it's all about the balance of probabilities. You might get Tyrod Taylor or Marc Bulger or Tom Brady (and that's about it for the last two decades, by the by), but more likely you're going to get Curtis Painter or Spergon Wynn or... (insert 35 other names here)

And with Mike Leach you got zero names.

But at pick # 198 in the SIXTH FREAKING ROUND, who cares who’s passed him up ? You’re taking a swing at the fences. How does it hurt to take a chance on a QB who was ridiculously productive in college, especially when it’s such a late pick. This is EXACTLY WHEN you take a chance like this. And sometimes it works out. Even if he’s a serviceable career backup, it’s better than throwing away the pick. Especially at a need position.

Falk has some Brady in him, has a chip on his shoulder because he was a walk on. Now he has a chip because of being bypassed. Not saying he’s the next Brady, or even a starter in the league, but how is NOT taking a chance on him, and NOT USING the pick at this point more beneficial than trading the pick ? Really is ridiculous at THIS point in the draft. Who knows, maybe it was time for a late lunch so they traded the pick.

Or they already worked him out and know he won't make the team?

If they won't take a flyer on a QB they worked out, what does that tell you?

But a lot of the reasons you're saying take the Falk can be said for the two picks they traded for. Take a chance on a guy in the 7th round. They will also certainly have a chip on their shoulder too for being passed on. Maybe one of the two becomes a serviceable career backup, and since it's two picks, better odds that at least one makes it.

I mean, they can also just draft a different dart throw at quarterback or bring one into camp. Pretty clear teams weren't viewing Falk as a guy with special traits or anything, and he has the disadvantage of coming from an offensive system that's never produced a passable NFL starter and many disappointments. You can find passable career backups on the street, it's why Matt Cassel has been floating around for umpteen years.
