October 25, 2009: Pats rout Bucs at Wembley
Brandon Meriweather sets tone with early pick-six
Brady throws for 308 yards, three TDs in 35-7 blowout

Week 7, Game 7 at Wembley Stadium
New England Patriots 35, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Raheem Morris
QBs: Tom Brady; Josh Johnson, Josh Freeman
Odds: New England favored by 15½
TV: CBS; Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Patriots improve to 5-2, Buccaneers drop to 0-7

Brandon Meriweather intercepted Josh Johnson passes on each of Tampa Bay's first two possessions - the first of which he ran back 39 yards for a pick-six - and the Patriots breezed to an easy victory in London. Tom Brady (23-32, 308 yards) threw touchdown passes of 14 yards to Wes Welker, 54 yards to Sam Aiken, and 35 yards to Ben Watson. Laurence Maroney capped the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run and the Pats defense controlled the Bucs, limiting Tampa to 240 total yards and ten first downs.

Tampa Bay's drive chart speaks volumes.
Nine punts, three interceptions, a turnover on downs, and just one score.

It took a trip across the Atlantic for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to get their first road victory of the season. For the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the change of scenery produced yet another loss.
Brady threw three touchdown passes and had more than 300 yards as the Patriots (5-2) beat the Buccaneers 35-7 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday in the NFL's third regular-season game at the iconic London venue.
The Patriots were coming off a 59-0 win over the Tennessee Titans in which Brady tossed six TD passes. New England wasn't as overpowering this time, and Brady even threw two interceptions in an uneven first-half performance.
But, with a 39-yard score on an interception return by safety Brandon Meriweather on the fifth play of the game, New England was always in control against the league's 27th-ranked defense.

Patriots improve to 6-0, Jets drop to 4-2

Tom Brady overcame New England’s shaky first three quarters by throwing for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth, and the Patriots defeated the New York Jets 30-23 on Sunday to remain unbeaten.
Brady completed 13 of 16 passes for 135 yards in the final quarter to overcome a 20-16 deficit and give New England (6-0) a two-game lead over the Jets in the AFC East. The Super Bowl MVP was 34 of 54 for 355 yards overall — numbers that would have been even better if not for the 11 drops by his receivers, six by newly activated Brandon LaFell.

The Jets rallied in the final minute, kicking a field goal on first down and then recovering the onside kick with 15 seconds left. But after a short pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick left the Jets 37 yards from the tying score, a false-start penalty on Brandon Marshall ended the game.
Rob Gronkowski had a career-high 11 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, Danny Amendola had eight for 86 and a TD and Brady also scored on a keeper from the 1 to give the defending Super Bowl champions their ninth straight victory, dating to last year’s playoffs. Brady also had an 11-yard scramble on a third-and-10, and with 15 rushing yards he was the Patriots’ leading runner.

The Pats offense had been stalling against the top-ranked Jets defensive unit. But when Tom Brady (34-for-54 for 355 yards and two touchdowns) and his teammates took the field with 12:50 remaining in the game, things started to change. Utilizing an attack that consisted almost entirely of pass plays, the Patriots moved down the field twice for scores by Danny Amendola (eight receptions for 86 yards) and Rob Gronkowski (11 catches for 108 yards).

The Jets (4-2) sacked Brady three times in the first half and the NFL’s top-ranked defense otherwise made him uncomfortable in the pocket to take a 13-10 halftime lead. But the Patriots’ injury-plagued offensive line responded in the second half, and so did Brady.
New York still led 20-16 after Fitzpatrick hit Chris Ivory for a 9-yard score late in the third and Nick Folk kicked the second of his three field goals. Brady was 7 for 8 for 85 yards on the next drive, finishing it off with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Amendola, who was upended before landing on the goal line.
The Jets went four-and-out and then Brady took over again, completing seven of nine attempts for 65 yards and ending it on a 15-yarder to a wide open Gronkowski, who trotted in untouched to make it 30-20.
The Jets, who had won two in a row, had hoped to tie New England for the AFC East lead and take control of a division that has been dominated by the four-time Super Bowl champs.

QBs: Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham; Jimmy Garoppolo
Odds: New England favored by 3
TV: CBS; Jim Nantz, Tony Romo; Tracy Wolfson
Patriots drop to 2-4, 49ers improve to 4-3

The Patriots' 27-point loss was their largest at home under Belichick. They had gone 286 games without a three-game losing streak, the longest span between three-game slides in NFL history. New England fell to 2-4 for the first since Belichick's first season in 2000, when the Patriots went 5-11.
New England was outgained 467-241 in total yards.
Cam Newton struggled for the Patriots, completing 9 of 15 passes for 98 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by Jarrett Stidham in the fourth quarter. Stidham was 6 of 10 for 64 yards and an interception.
Newton was out of sync from the outset, making poor reads and poorer throws. Garoppolo, meanwhile, was successful in spreading out New England's defense with a steady diet of passes behind the line of scrimmage and jet sweeps to get the ball into the hands of Jeff Wilson, Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle.

San Francisco dominated the first half, taking a 23-3 lead, holding the ball for 22:30 and racking up a 301-59 advantage in total yards. The Patriots managed four first downs to the 49ers' 18.
The Niners took just over five minutes and nine plays to march 75 yards and take a 7-0 lead on 3-yard run by Jeff Wilson Jr. It was the first time the Patriots have allowed a touchdown on an opponent's opening drive at home since Week 4 of 2016 against Buffalo.
Following a Patriots punt, San Francisco was pinned inside its 15. Long completions by Garoppolo helped erase some early penalty losses before he missed high on a pass for Kittle and was intercepted by Devin McCourty. San Francisco's defense limited the damage, yielding a 40-yard field goal by Nick Folk.

Trailing 10-3, Newton made a bad play worse when he tried to dump off the ball on the run to receiver Jakobi Meyers. It was picked off by linebacker Fred Warner. Five plays later, the 49ers capitalized on a 4-yard touchdown run by Kyle Juszczyk.
The lead grew to 23-3 with just under a minute to go before halftime on a 16-yard run by Wilson.

The Patriots got walloped, 33-6, by the San Francisco 49ers in a game Sunday when quarterback Cam Newton was benched in the fourth quarter for Jarrett Stidham.
There's no need to mince words. Newton was awful. He went 9-of-15 for 98 yards with three interceptions, all of which were his fault. He also ran five times for 19 yards, but nothing he did with his legs made up for his dreadful day as a passer.
Newton has struggled as a passer in three straight games, dating back to the Patriots' 36-20 Week 3 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He missed another game against the Kansas City Chiefs with COVID-19 in the middle of that stretch. He hasn't looked like a serviceable quarterback since Week 2, when the Patriots lost to the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots need better receivers. But Newton's struggles largely are unrelated to skill-position play.
Stidham, meanwhile, has four interceptions in 27 passing attempts. Third-stringer Brian Hoyer was bad in Week 4's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Jake Dolegala is on the practice squad.
Maybe it's time to see if Julian Edelman could have made it as an NFL quarterback.

Patriots drop to 4-3, Dolphins improve to 5-2

The New England Patriots dropped a 12-9 decision to the Miami Dolphins in overtime at Pro Player Stadium.

The game - which featured little scoring, a plethora of turnovers and punts - ended with a 43-yard field goal by Orlindo Mare.

The Patriots (4-3) took a 9-6 lead with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter only to see the Dolphins come back and tie the game, 9-9. Mare's 25-yard field goal capped a 9-play, 52-yard drive.

Miami got on the board first with Mare's 48-yard field goal early in the second quarter, 3-0.

New England finally scored on the Dolphins' stingy defense thanks to Adam Vinatieri's 41-yard field goal in the third quarter. The field goal marked the first time a team has scored on the Dolphins at Pro Player Stadium in 12 quarters.

The Patriots took a 6-3 lead in the fourth quarter thanks again to Vinatieri, who hit a 30-yard field goal. The two key plays on the drive; a 36-yard reception by WR Shawn Jefferson on 3rd-and-11 from New England's 15 and a pass interference charged to Dolphins CB Terrell Buckley on Jefferson. The Buckley penalty gave the Patriots a first down at the Dolphins' 11.

Without scoring a touchdown, the Miami Dolphins turned the tables on the New England Patriots. All it took was some clutch kicking and dominant defense.
Olindo Mare booted four field goals, including a 43-yarder with 10:24 left in overtime, and Miami earned a breakthrough 12-9 victory Sunday in a showdown of AFC East co-leaders.
The Patriots had won their four previous games against Miami, including three last season, but the Dolphins ended the streak thanks to three field goals by Mare in the final 10 minutes. Miami (5-2) took over sole possession of first place in the division.
"It's a big win because we haven't beaten New England in two years," receiver O.J. McDuffie said. "Now we're on top. It feels good to have everybody chasing us."
The injury-plagued Patriots (4-3) slipped to second with their second straight loss.
Miami won without scoring a touchdown for the first time since 1983, mainly thanks to a defense that hasn't allowed a touchdown at home in 14 quarters.
The Dolphins held New England to 26 yards rushing and ended Robert Edwards' scoring streak. He was the first NFL rookie to rush for a touchdown in his first six games.

Mare Boots Pats in Overtime
Dan Marino completed 23 of 42 passes for 279 yards but threw three interceptions, increasing his total to nine in the past four games against the Patriots.
Marino rallied Miami from a fourth-quarter deficit to win for the 34th time
Marino moved Miami 52 yards in the final two minutes of regulation to set up Mare's game-tying 25-yard field goal, and the Patriots never saw the ball in OT.
Following the kickoff, a pass-interference penalty on Ty Law on third-and-10 allowed Miami to keep possession deep in its own territory, and Marino completions of 25 and 10 yards set up Mare's game-winner.
New England's Adam Vinatieri kicked field goals from 41, 30 and 36 yards. Bledsoe went 13-for-33 for 240 yards and surpassed 20,000 yards passing in his 83rd NFL game. Only Marino did it faster, reaching the milestone in 74 games.
Bledsoe was working without three of his top four wide receivers, including Terry Glenn, who was inactive because of a hamstring injury. Defensive end Willie McGinest was inactive with a groin injury, and fullback Tony Carter was sidelined following knee surgery.
The low-scoring, mistake-filled game turned wild in the fourth quarter. A disputed 38-yard pass interference penalty on Terrell Buckley set up Vinatieri's 30-yard field goal for a 6-3 New England lead.
That was the first of four field goals in the final 9:10 of regulation, with the Dolphins twice coming from behind. Kickoff returns of 32 and 37 yards by rookie John Avery led to Miami's scores.

October 25, 1992: Browns 19, Pats 17
Patriots blow lead with three 4th-quarter turnovers
Belichick, Browns hand Pats 7th straight loss

Sunday October 25, 1992 at 4:00
Week 8, Game 7 at Foxboro Stadium
Cleveland Browns 19, New England Patriots 17
Head Coaches: **** MacPherson, Bill Belichick
QBs: Hugh Millen, Mike Tomczak
Odds: Cleveland favored by 4½
TV: NBC; Dan Hicks, Dan Hampton
Patriots drop to 0-7, Browns improve to 4-3

In 1991 **** MacPherson took over as head coach, with a five-win improvement - albeit, to 6-10 - and everything appeared to be optimistic heading into 1992. Instead the team regressed, finding creative ways to lose, similar to the embarassing 1990 club. This was one of those games.

The Patriots turned the ball over not once, not twice, but three times in the fourth quarter - destroying the momentum of three consecutive scores and blowing a 19-7 lead - to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

This game marked the last time that the Patriots lost a home game to the Browns.

Cleveland's coach for this game? Some guy named Bill Belichick.

Give the Cleveland Browns’ punchless offense enough chances, and eventually it will find a way to score. The Browns needed 59 1/2 minutes and four fumbles to find the end zone Sunday, and they got there just in time to defeat the Patriots, 19-17, and send winless New England to its seventh consecutive loss.

After recovering the Patriots’ fourth fumble in New England territory in the second half, the Browns (4-3) marched 40 yards and won the game on a six-yard pass from Mike Tomczak to Scott Galbraith with 31 seconds to play.

“This is our toughest loss,” said Patriot quarterback Hugh Millen, who passed for two touchdowns but fumbled with 3:54 to play when he was sacked by linebacker Mike Johnson at the New England 40. Johnson also recovered the fumble.
Tomczak passed to a diving Galbraith in the corner of the end zone on a fourth-and-two play for the winning score. Cleveland’s other points came on field goals of 29, 28, 21 and 32 yards by Matt Stover.
Millen had touchdown passes of 22 yards to Ben Coates and 19 yards to Kevin Turner, and Charlie Baumann kicked a 30-yard field goal for the Patriots--who matched their 0-7 start in 1969 as the worst in team history.
The game was played before the second-smallest crowd in the NFL this season--32,219.
The Browns, who led, 9-0, early in the second quarter, saw their streak of three consecutive games without allowing a touchdown end in the second quarter.
The Patriots, who entered the game with only 13 first-half points, completed five passes during a 10-play drive that ended with Millen’s scoring pass to Turner, who carried Cleveland safety Eric Turner the final three yards into the end zone.

For 59 minutes and 30 seconds Sunday, the New England Patriots led the Cleveland Browns.
Then for the seventh consecutive time this season and the 13th time in the last 16 regular season games the Patriots walked away empty handed.
The Browns dealt the Patriots their latest round of misery when Mike Tomczak threw a fourth-down, 6-yard touchdown pass to backup tight end Scott Galbraith with 30 seconds left to play -- bringing Cleveland a 19- 17 victory. It was the first scoring pass of Galbraith's NFL career.
Matt Stover gave the Browns a 9-0 lead as he hit two first quarter field goals from 29 and 28 yards and one of 21 yards in the second period. Stover kicked a career-best four field goals in seven attempts, the seven tries tying a club record.
New England came back with 17 unanswered points. The first seven came with 35 seconds left in the first half when Kevin Turner scored his first touchdown in the NFL on a 19-yard pass from Hugh Millen.
Millen threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Ben Coates in the third period and the Patriots added a 30-yard field goal by Charlie Baumann with 2:36 left in the third period.
But the Patriots came apart in the final quarter. Jon Vaughn's fumble at the New England 18-yard line 54 seconds into the quarter was scooped up by David Brandon and four plays later Stover kicked a 32-yard field goal to cut the Patriots lead to 17-12.
With 3:54 left in the game the Patriots faced a third and 16 at their 45. Millen, attempting to pass out of shotgun formation, was sacked by Clay Matthews and fumbled the ball. It was the fourth turnover of the game (all fumbles) and the third in the second half.
Mike Johnson recovered for the Browns. Eight plays later, Tomczak hit Galbraith for the winning touchdown.
In addition to fumbling the ball and setting up the drive for the winning score, Millen was sacked three other times and re-injured his left shoulder.
'You never play a perfect football game,' he said. 'But when you lose, the mistakes are magnified. This was the lowest loss of the season because of the way we lost. At 0-6 maybe you can turn things around. Now that we are 0-7, I just don't know.'

I didn’t realized we started playing over there that long ago
This was just the third game ever over there. And unlike the current early morning games, this was still televised in the US at 1:00 pm ET - so it kicked off at 5:00 in England.

If I recall correctly the Bucs volunteered to go over, which pissed off their season ticket holders. Tampa Bay was not very good at the time and their attendance was way down. In addition their owner, Malcolm Glazer, owned Manchester United, and was attempting to cultivate some sort of cross-interest between the two fan bases/two geographical areas.
