"NSFW": Texans beat reporter observations on NE/HOU joint practice

I'll just give you one teaser:

It hurts me to say it, but the best non-quarterback on the field the past two days was seemingly Patriots receiver Chris Hogan. I remember Hogan from the Dolphins' Hard Knocks season and he was known as 7/11 because he was always open. Well, he got open short, intermediate and deep and he caught everything thrown his way the past two days. He was the most dangerous player on the Patriots offense for the Texans secondary this week.

With Cooks being such an explosive WR and teams have to account a safety to help out on Gronk and not to mention Edelman being a factor in the short, mid passing game, Hogan will always be a mismatch, we are going to see some huge games from him this season. Not sure how you defend our team, especially with a healthy Gronk

You defend this team by headhunting, making dirty hits, taking our players out of the game, and hoping that the refs keep their whistles in their pockets.

One of my biggest fears about this season is that every team in the AFC knows that their road to the Superbowl begins with somehow eliminating Tom Brady from the picture. Not every DC is going to be honorable about how they plan to do that. The O-Line had better be up to scratch. A lot riding on Scar this year.

That could not have been written by the slobs that cover the Pats. God forbid they write something that gives a fan an actual description of several plays, including specific details, that explains a conclusion based on facts. Our nitwits start with their conclusions and work backwards, and they must "of course" include some whining about their working conditions and some shade towards the Pats because they cannot risk being scarred for life by Felger not approving.

Nice post-practice analysis, thanks for sharing. I find it often (though not always, of course) useful to read viewpoints from writers that cover opponents.

Two small nitpicks, that should not take away from the column as a whole:
- the writer obviously made a mistake in identifying a player on the field as Rivers in observation #6.
- now I am very curious who the 'young offensive tackle' is that was beaten badly by Whitney Mercilus. Not to shame the OT - Mercilus is after all an excellent player - just curious who it was. Hopefully someone the Pats are not counting on, such as Andrew Jelks or Max Rich.

You're pretending that media personalities are actually the guys covering the teams. They aren't. Greg Bedard, Mike Reiss, Tom Curren, Chris Price, Phil Perry. Those are the guys who do the same work as this guy, and they do it every bit as well.

I liked this one too:

13. A couple of plays later, Tom Brady put one right on the money to Julian Edelman for about a 20 yard gain. I happened to have eyes on Edelman the whole time and it looked like he was blanketed with two defenders on him. Then, all of a sudden, he planted and cut to the sideline. And, as expected, the ball was already in the air. As soon as Edelman got his head around, the ball was there. He ran right through the catch and out of bounds without being touched.

Nice read. Thanks for that link. I am looking forward to this game primarily because of all the connections between the coaching staffs as well as seeing our young'ns on the field again.

It's simple math. The other team can only play so many deep defenders for help in coverage.
If they tried to double all 3, they wouldnt have enough secondary talent to do the job correctly. Even if they tried, that would leave gaping holes for the rb's to exploit.

The only thing that is going to stop this offense is if the offensive line can't do its job. It's the only thing that has stopped it in the past and nothings changed.
