NFL's officials explaination

Anyone else catch the NFL's officials discussion of the SB calls?
1) Jackson's td- he clearly pushed off as demonstrated by the defenders feet moving back after push and his arm extending
2) Pylon td - as of rule change 3yrs ago, the pylon doesn't determine in/out of bounds. His second foot coming down out did.
3) Ben's td - couldn't determine either way by replay. The ref's arm up just shows that he was still "processing" the play in his mind.
4)Hold on Locklear - "wasn't much of a hold" but had all the elements to make the call.
5) Hasselback's tackle - this was a mistake(gasp), wrong call, but from the refs perspective it looked like the qb was "going through" the lead blocker to get to the carrier, when in fact he "wiffed on him", and that's why he made the call.

No mention of the clear offsides by Stealers on 4&5!

I've moved on from this sad display of a Super Bowl, but these "explainations" left me concerned for future officials impact on our game! Hopefully, there will be continued, intelligent debate behind the scenes!

4) Is a DOUBLE WHAMMY. A offside against Pittsburg was NOT CALLED. INSTEAD, a HOLDING was called Seattle.

5) ANOTHER offside was NOT CALLED on the NEXT play, which caused a SACK, and which then led to an interception.

These were two back-to-back back-breakers.

There was probably no point in asking Mike about the horse collar non-call or the TO after the clock expired because he'd have no explanation for two obvious non calls in the Steelers favor other than they missed them. And unfortunately those misses just underscore the perceived imbalance that leaves fans wondering about officials who see phantom or ticky tack calls on one combatant and yet fail to see the obvious on the other. Is it merely incompetence, confusion under pressure, or something worse like internal or external influences effecting official judgements on the field?

I'm actually okay with both of those. I didn't feel the horse collar tackle should have been called, because the ballcarrier was dragged to the ground forward, not yanked backwards, which is what the rule prevents. Most people (broadcasters, analysts) don't get this, so they're always yelling "HORSECOLLAR!" and columnists b!tch that the rule's being ignored.

The play clock expires on many offensive plays all year long, usually by one-second or less. It seems to be an unspoken arrangement that the center can snap the ball right after 0:00 and not be penalized.

But those are the only two I'm ok with.

I only mentioned those because they were blatant instances of the rules as written not being enforced, whereas the additional favorable non calls are (even if poorly) defensible (drawn offsides vs. offsides, spots, etc.). The horsecollar was by the book right in front of an official (possibly the same one who earlier had made the assumption holding call). The clock didn't merely expire just short of the snap, they were given a TO after it had clearly expired - and someone is responsible for watching that clock. So for those two Mike would have had no defense - they just screwed up. The sad fact is there were far too many questionable calls for him to have reviewed.

my bad, when I mentioned the non-offsides calls on 4&5, I forgot about the sack play, which as you pointed out, was the play that the steelers didn't get called for offsides, not the Hasselback block. Where was that ref standing that he didn't see OS twice in a row?

He was busy counting his bribe money.

quiet 40-year conspiracy with hundreds of people?

I don't believe in any NFL conspiracy. I don't believe they could actually keep that quiet if they tried it. But, I do believe that each official has a personal bias toward teams and maybe more specifically players. And it shows.
toward teamz, toward specific styles of play, and specific players.
the only constant: they all hate rodney harrison.

No delay of game?
[/QUOTE]

It's not just this game - Delay of game calls are blown frequently, why can't the NFL adopt a buzzer/light flashing system that goes off as soon as time is up - just like you see in basketball with the 24 second clock. No ball snapped - automatic penalty, no judgement needed.
