But you said the defense was "autrocious", and that has NEVER been the case. While it was true that at the time of the trade it wasn't playing to its potential (like it is now), it was never as bad as the mediots told us, and you obviously believed.
Lombardi NEVER stated Bill thought the D was autrocious.
My understanding was that he was saying that the defense is underperforming and not that it was crap. I don't see how he was wrong about it. He never said it is an unfixable, fatal flaw.
Bill actually sounded excited....

Sure he did. He specifically said that the defense had not played well at any point up until that trade was made. He said Hightower was underperforming as well. He said a bunch of nonsense in that tirade that wasn't based in reality. He completely ripped the defense to shreds that day.
Most of what went on during the first half of the season came down to them playing a very plain defense. That's what they always do at the beginning of the season. Lombardi should have known better.
Not sure why you would disagree with his assessment. The difference between the last 4 games and the first 8 games is pretty apparent. Players were underperforming, miscommunication led to many blown schemes, tackles and also coverages.
The difference between the last few games and the first half was the scheme. The players weren't being utilized to the best of their abilities. But we all know that they build the playbook throughout the season, so I'm not sure what everyone was expecting. I disagreed with his assessment because he was making absurd claims about how they had never played well up until that point and how Hightower was underperforming.
And yes, the defense is playing better now towards the end of the season, as they always do. Again, not a surprise. I was saying this would be the case in the first half of the season, when everyone was ****ting on the D.
Yes, I agree that we are playing more complex schemes now but I think you got the cause and effect a bit inverted here. Personally, I think that we are using more exotic looks and complex schemes now because BB & co finally settled on a rotation and we got to a point with said rotation where errors in communication are at a minimum. You can't get more complex before the fundamentals are "perfectly" sound otherwise little mistakes (or freelancing players) can mean big plays for the other team.
And early on, several issues that Lombardi mentioned made BB & co keep searching for the right personnel mix and the fitting schemes. At least that's my take on it..
Whose fault is it that you have no backup RB and a bad o-line? Funny how you broncos fans didn't care about the pats bad offensive line in last year's AFCCG.
Did you read the guy's username?
That's what they always use the first part of the season for. Working on the fundamentals and settling on a rotation. I was always confident in the defensive talent, so I wasn't worried about where the defense was headed.
Anyways, I think we can all agree that stating that the defense had not played well at all up until the trade was not an accurate statement. Neither was the statement about Hightower underperforming.
Did you read the guy's username?
No i didn't - it took me a while to decipher his username. Is this guy still upset about SB 36?
I don't know why that Rams fan keeps showing up here.
It is like David Lee Roth critiquing Andrea Bocelli.
That he likes the way the defense is playing now does not, in any way, mean that he /didn't/ not like what was going on before. I mean, he traded Collins for a reason, and it wasn't the draft pick.Lombardi's tirade immediately after the trade about how bad the defense was and how Bill was looking to make a statement to the defense by trading Collins.
Needless to say, he was wrong.
