Re: NFL officials

BTW I recommend "How to win Friends and Influence People" - you need it.
Grow up... you demonstrated you were obsessed with having the last word in our little discussion, so I let you have it... but, like an immature baby that not only needs the last word but the attention that comes with it, you have to jump in again to a discussion I am having with someone else...

Now, unless you have something intelligent to contribute - highly doubtful - I leave you to have the last word you so desperately cherish....

Re: NFL officials

If you do not wish to read and learn it's YOUR loss...
I have read a myriad of articles discussing this issue. I have based my opinion on facts and beliefs. If you have a point to make, then make it. Don't be a wuss and just post a link to entire articles.
given you're narrow minded viewpoint you'd just trash any ideas anyways. ...I disagree about the full time officials....so let's use reverse logic...how much POORER officiating would it be in the other sports would be if they were part time???
This is an silly question due to the nature of other sports - the sheer volume of games requires men with no other job commitments. But in the NFL, with one game per week for a 5-6 month period (depending on how many postseason games you ref), there is time enough to do something else as well.

Just out of curiousity... what do you think MLB umps do during the offseason..? Put in 40 hour work weeks watching film and having meetings...? Or NBA or NHL refs..? Do they work full time hours during the offseason...? If you think that's the case, you have a lot to learn.

I have answered every question you have asked. I have made my points and supported them and you disagree. I have read plenty of articles on this issue but I am not going to research any to provide for you.

Oh, but YOU had to bring me up in a post didn't you Padawan? I suppose you'll reference me later in this thread so I'll see you then.

If you feel there are any questions I haven't answered, please feel free to repost them and I will gladly answer any questions you may have on this issue. But beyond that, we're just going to have to agree to disagree and leave it at that. For some reason, people such as you just can't do that...

Are you NEM's replacement on the board?

Please, if I may, allow me the chance to restate my previous comment. I will gladly answer any intelligent questions you may pose, if you are even capable of posing such. If your only desire is to respond with belligerence and idiocy, then those questions shall simply be ignored.

Damn, thought so. I hope you're easier on our OC.

Re: NFL officials

I think there's a difference between outright fixing of a game and going easy on one side. The league is biased towards the Colts and Mannings so not only does it favor them in marketing, but it also spills on to the refereeing. The 50/50 calls have always gone their way and they will continue to do so until P. Manning gets old and another son of a 70's QB gets drafted.

My thoughts exactly.

The 2005 playoffs were a disgraceful embarassment. The league's dirty little secret (a dolts SB) was exposed; another phoney-baloney screw-job playoffs would, or should, have caused a congressional investigation.

I also believe that it is easier for an official to influence a game's outcome than one may think. There are many officials in a crew, and also many penalty flags waiting to be thrown, or not thrown. A first down, or a big gain or loss can be negated by just one thrown flag (see: T. Brown, Offensive PI); conversely, an obvious penalty can go unpunished (see: Hayden v. Caldwell). Had those plays been interpreted correctly, the NEP would have scored at least 7 more points. Thusly, two decisions changed history. Not that hard, really.

If you honestly believe that, then why do you still watch football..? The day I believed an iota of what you are saying is the day I have watched my final football game because, if what you say is true, the NFL is no better than the WWE.

It's easy to say in retrospect what an official could have done to change the game. It is difficult to say beforehand which official will be making the key calls that will affect the outcome. That's why I don't think it would be feasible to bribe one single official and hope for a certain outcome.

1) Why do I still watch? I can't help myself.

2) I don't mean to imply that any individual officials were bribed; I just wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that an unspoken mandate from league HQ had been given to the zebras stating, in effect: If there is a play which could be interpreted 50-50, then make it 51-49, in favor of the dolts.

That's awful specific to be "unspoken." Are you suggesting telepathy? Communication by winks and nods?

Come on guys, you're just being provocative, right? None of you actually believes this stuff, do you?

I could see the league instructing refs to ref with a particular style, or to emphasize certain things, and maybe even doing that with a general awareness that it will affect the style of play of certain teams to put a more entertaining product on the field. For example, don't-touch-the-quarterback rules hurt blitzing teams more significantly.

But the notion that there is a wink and a nod to favor particular teams is UFO-ville.

Hey, I'm just saying, that's all...

Besides, my wife just finished watching The DaVinci Code on HBO, and I'm feeling a little conspiritorial.

Re: NFL officials [merged]

Now that NBA official(s) is getting busted for fixing games, do you guys think it is possible that the same thing could be going on in the NFL? Like those "BS" pass interference and holding calls are not just judgement calls after all!

I dont even want to imagine what would happen to the game if something like this gets discovered. What do you guys think?
if it happens , just forget about sports where umpires or refs make judgement calls, altogether, because it will just have no believability

Heh heh... an "unspoken mandate"...? It's not much of a mandate if no one talks about it, now is it..?

I maintain my contention that the biggest problem is the refs are biased in favor of the home team - especially during big games - and that is the true problem that needs to be addressed.
