The NFL administration (Goodell in particular) is the root problem with all the problems this season including Deflategate. After the Malice in the Palace riot a decade ago, the NFL decided to follow David Stern's lead and punish badboys - it's good for business, as it shows you have principles. But if you really have principles, they are pre-defined. Principles are NOT defined "as we go along." The penalty for Ray Rice beating his wife is something a ballsy commissioner would know without gauging and retaking public opinion.
Not so long ago, the NFL was a well-run sports organization envied by the NHL, NBA, and major league baseball....commissioners like Bert Bell, Pete Rozell, and maybe one day Paul Tagliabue in the HoF. And Roger Goodell? Taking the most successful sports league to this? Nobody is suggesting he is like Mountain Landis who saved MLB from itself after the Black Sox scandal...we need that kind of commissioner.
We have had good teachers and bad teachers. The good ones laid down the law and students did not test them...that's what we need instead of what we have now. Again, years ago policy should have been laid down. Also address issues as they happen decisively instead of waiting for public opinion and doing the popular thing. Principle is not running the NFL - it's the money.
Another thing: It's easy to crack down on players, but this should have happened years ago with coaches and the front office. Again, playing to the crowd. Suspect like the bad passive-aggressive teacher Goodell's decision will be what the crowd wants to hear.
