Next Stop, the Underwear Olympics

Yeah because Irish Chocolate was taking up all the blocks.

You can acknowledge his size all you want but that's not going to stop me from saying he's too small and is a poor fit.

Size is generally important but I'm suspecting there's going to be lots of "smaller" guys getting underdrafted and larger guys getting overdrafted as teams play wannabe NFC west. If we nab Jimmie Ward or Lamarcus Joyner in the 3rd I'm going to be thrilled.

Earl Thomas is 1" taller, Eric Weddle is 2" taller.

And anyway, I've consistently acknowledged that his size is an issue. That doesn't stop him being the best pure safety though.

Bob Sanders 5'8" so I'm with you Manx.

I am also onboard the Exum train.

You are seeing different sacks to me then. I saw three excellent rushes in the bowl game that lead to a sack, an Int and a forced incompletion.

I'm not saying he doesn't have good sacks as well. I'm merely noting his numbers are slightly inflated. I can't remember what game it was from but he had two in a really short span where the RT blocked down and left him all alone in nearly identical plays that led to sacks.

But you directed a question at me but I hadn't said he was a good fit.

i dont think you pass on him based on the combine. you have to look at the entire body of work like game film, pro day etc.

I agree, and that's why I pass on him. I was not a fan to begin with and the combine was where I was hoping he would change my opinion, he only worsened it though.

I think someone will take him before the end of day two. Now here's the question. Considering that BB has drafted Mallett and O'Connell in the third round, are we absolutely sure it won't be us? Even as a QB, Thomas fits BB's high upside philosophy.

I can't see BB taking Thomas in the 3rd, personally. I think anytime day 3 is a possibility. It still comes down to this: he's an exceptional athlete but his QB mechanics are poor, and he's never played TE beyond the high school level. If someone wants to reach day 2 based on pure athleticism, more power to them.

One of the things that tends to happen at the Combine is that uber-athletic players get hyped out of control. The tape tends to be more sobering. But it only takes 1 team to take a chance.

He probably won't. I just made the point that he'd done it before.

100% agree. I just haven't seen why people love Amaro.

These are questions that we can't answer. I'm not saying we would do it, I'm just saying that we're as likely as anyone to do it given past history.

And would Mallett have to be traded first? It would just mean that they either carry three QBs for a year or Mallett gets traded after the fact.

I think those are answerable, I just haven't watched enough to know the answers. That's why I asked. I can tell you the answer is yes for BW, Manziel, and McCarron.

I think a Mallett trade would have to happen because of needs, not because we couldn't carry three QBs. If we traded Mallett would could use that pick to fill a need, and then fill a need at back-up QB -- two needs filled. If we still have Mallett I'd rather use 93 to fill a need rather than a luxury pick -- zero needs filled.

Bob Sanders was 5' 8 3/8" 204# and hit like a truck, plus he put up an unreal 4.35 40 at the Combine. There's a big difference between 204# and 189#, and Sanders' wasn't able to hold up against the pounding in the NFL.

Again, Ward is a fine player. No doubt about it. I'm just worried that he is too small and light to be a full time safety in the NFL, and I certainly think that the Pats need a different type of player opposite McCourty.

The 6 DBs who I am personally most interested in seeing over the next 2 days:

- Kyle Fuller, Virginia Tech. 6' 200#, 32 7/8" arms.
- Bashaud Breeland, Clemson. 5'11" 197#.
- Deone Bucannan, Washington St. 6'1" 207#.
- Antone Exum, Virginia Tech. 6' 213#.
- Jonathan Dowling, Western Kentucky. 6'3" 190#, 33 1/8" arms.
- Dontae Johnson, North Carolina St. 6'2" 200#.

Yeah why would anyone want to be the NFC West?

But you directed a question at me but I hadn't said he was a good fit.

Fair enough.

Fair enough.

Here's the thing, you've got to stay ahead of the curve. A lot of the big guys were undervalued assets a couple of years ago and Seattle took advantage of that market inefficiency. But now if everyone's trying to get "long corners and safeties", you're paying more and the discounted talent is smaller guys.

Got to get ahead by snapping up better players with less draft capital. Its going to be hard to get a discount on size after the super bowl.

As I've said elsewhere, you need to put a value on each player - based mainly on film review, interviews and medical assessments - and then be prepared to snatch up the values come draft days. It's all about value - as long as that value fits your scheme and needs. For everyone that's overvalued, someone will be undervalued. Work the market. Buy low and sell high. I think Lamarcus Joyner is one of the best pure football players in the draft and is the kind of player who makes others around him better, for example, but we're already flush with nickel backs and I'm not sure he's big enough to hold up at safety. But if he drops to the 3rd round, he's absurd value.

Donte Moncrief: 4.40 in the forty. No other receiver had a better 10 yd split and he had a 39.5 vertical and 11' broad jump.

If he could be had in the third or fourth round, he'd be excellent value.

If I were a gambler I'd be willing to bet a few $ that the Pats scouts saw him more than once this season.

He's also a very good player.

@MoveTheSticks: Mike Evans- 6'4 3/4, 231, 35 1/8 inch arms, 37 inch vertical jump. That is an insane catch radius!!

If he gets snagged outside the top 10, that would be amazing value. I can see him going top 5 and first WR.
