Can we go back to the end of the season and get a “do over”?

Live look at coach's special teams coverage training sessions. Schooler is hyped!

And to add even another factor: The Patriots rankings on ST have varied wildly even with the same coaches. I think in 2021 they were near the top of the league with Cam Achord, then in 2022 and 2023 dropped off. Did Cam forget how to coach? Was 2021 a fluke, or were the players that much better? Did the struggles overall in 2023 affect buy in on special teams? It's really hard to answer those questions definitively, but it's more complicated than "coach good" or "coach bad".

In 2021, trusted players failed to perform up to standards. Every one of the players responsible for a screw up on the PUNT UNIT was jettisoned from the team.

The Patriots couldn't kick a FG to save their lives. And Baringer really needed to learn the art of pinning teams inside their 10, but he was a rookie. I wonder how much of the Patriots ranking was that. Remember, Folk tailed off last year as well, and we had injured punters in previous years. We were used to seeing ST excellence until 2021. So could it be that what we really saw was just a fall off? In other words, mediocrity?

Baringer had 98 Punts last season. The results were as follows:

Inside 20 - 38 (38.8%)
OOB - 14 (14.3%)
Downed - 8 (8.2%)
TB - 8 (8.2%)
FC - 24 (24.5%)
Returned - 44 (44.9%)
Return yards - 439 (10 YPR)

Highest % inside the 20 - 49ers at 50% (26/52).
Lowest % inside the 20 - 20.3% - Cardinals - (13/64)

Lowest OOB - 1.4% Commanders (1/73)
Highest OOB - 20% Raiders (15/75)

Lowest TB - 0% - Colts
Highest TB - 15.2% - Titans (12/79)

Highest FC - 41.3% - Chargers (31/75)
Lowest FC - 11.7% - Eagles ( 7/52)

Lowest Returned - 32% - Dolphins (17/53)
Highest Returned - 61.5% Eagles (32/52)

Lowest Yards / Return - 6.5 YPR Jaguars
HIGHEST Yards/Return - 15.5 YPR - Rams

One of BB’s strengths was finding gems in the late rounds and UDFAs.
Despite people b***hing about 5th round Special Teamers..
Someone already complained and said Mayo better not take a Special Teamer in the draft. Wait for UDFA.. *SMH*

Really? ************. Was Geraldo too busy? What about Donahue?

Hope his name is not an omen. That would be another...

You missed Maury - He went to the Falcons, unfortunately.

Yup.

I remember so many fans being bent out of shape at BB using a 5th round pick on Matt Slater, a guy with a chance of being voted into the HOF.

The problem with punting stats like these is that, except for return yards, they don't tell the whole story. e.g., If your coach surrenders past midfield, a punt that takes a bad bounce into the EZ is a touchback, but not the punter's fault. A punt from the 20, though, has almost no excuse (save for something like the BUF wind game from 2008).

Similarly, OOB doesn't really tell you anything at all about good/bad. A punt that goes OOB at the 5 is great. At the 50, not so much.

Just when I think they couldn’t possibly be any dumber with having kept Achord for 4 years, they go and do something like this..

The Pat's must have punted more than usual last season with the 32nd ranked offense in the NFL.

That puts you at risk with more exposure for things to go wrong. As someone else mentioned losing Marcus Jones was a nail in the coffin.

So much for "wait and see". The league season's not even over yet.

But look at the second Buffalo game in 2022. Those two TDs given up by the ST were a big part of a reason the Pats lost that game and failed to make the playoffs.

Although that was the combination of Folk not being able to kickoff and a last-minute injury that kept Schooler out of the game.

Idk. More like lack of lane integrity, tackling. It was an exposition of feces.
