Player Signing New Pats OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr

They were prob in a bidding war.

This is nothing close to the Agholor signing. A 1yr $5m for a starting OL/RT is very reasonable.
But why so much guaranteed money. We lost 11 million for wynn last year and looks like we would be on the hook for 8 million on 2 veteran OTs who would not even take a snap.

I don't think it's a lot of money. That is where we disagree.

I'm curious if anyone has access to similar preseason stats from previous years? Would love to see how top rated preseason OTs, especially rookie or untested OTs, fared in the regular season. I tried searching, but gave up after 92 seconds of failure.

I think it's safe to assume that players who do well in preseason fare better than players who don't.

Bill has been driving us crazy for years by not reaching in the draft for a position of need. When you reach, you end up having to fix it the next year and get into this bad cycle. At least when you don't reach, you have added value somewhere ... like we did with the defense this year.

Edit: one exception was the year he drafted the two tight ends: keene and Assie, and how did that work out for us?

Reiff was supposed to be a starter/compete with Anderson. And then the Pats bolstered the competition with a draft pick (Sow). Reiff got injured. Anderson got sick. Neither was plannable. It's football. This stuff happens. The hope is that neither are out for the season.

Cleveland is another team I could have mentioned, they have a great line with a lot of depth.
Also, seems Strong landed in a good place for him.
We should be able to learn if he was/is NFL caliber or not.
If he can't make it behind CLE's line, he wasn't going to make it here.

The point is the Pats THOUGHT they'd be OK at OT THIS year and a developmental guy was all they needed for this draft. Myself I would have gone for the Pitt kid, but no one pays ME for player evaluations, nor SHOULD anyone. But I have 20-20 hindight that is among the best on this board too

And I think THAT is what we are doing here. We are applying hindsight which is very easy to do AFTER THE FACT. I fit all the buttons. It makes YOU look smart and the other guy look DUMB. It's a wonderful thing.
I agree with your premise. At some point it's water under the bridge, yet it seems members of this board can hold a grievance forever.

This should calm some people down, NOT!

Well that confirms one thing - Wheatley will be playing above anyone they have as an option at RT.
BB actually said they "need him". Whether as the top backup / swing T, or perhaps starting RT.
The probably thought Sow isn't ready, and McD & Reiff are too old?
The real question is why trade a draft pick for Lowe, right after that too?

Lowe has actually played in four regular season NFL games.

I have been unable to find any evidence Wheatley has taken even a single snap in a regular season game.

the Pats probably had called multiple teams and got Wheatley first, then when they got a chance to get Lowe as well they went for the double dip. So I expect Lowe to be ahead of Wheatley.

Reiff might also be hurt.

McDermott is a backup.

They want Big Mike at RG

Lowe played some LT as well.

I think Strong wasn't making it through cutdowns so they felt ok to trade him. And a 6th isn't a ton to give up. Then you have two good options to compete for the interim (and maybe longer) RT and some better options for backup and swing tackle.

As for playing time, just from reading up since the trade, it feels like Wheatley was a longer project to get where he is now, but he's ready now. Lowe was ready earlier, but I don't know that he's the better of the two. But you let them compete with Sow and play whoever is best. It really feels like some low-cost investments to try to fix a problem that sprang up from injuries and an illness.

and what has Strong showed so far in his career?
I think they let him compete in this camp for the 3rd down back and he didn't win it. And with Elliot coming in and pushing Kevin Harris down further, Strong probably wasn't making the roster.

Doesn't it feel strange to comment on how an RB didn't perform in a thread that highlights how bad our OL is?

Point is, we need to improve the OL before we can really comment on RB performance, IMO.

You can certainly compare the performance of RBs operating behind the same OL.

The same good OL, sure.

The same bad OL, nope, IMO.
