Heading into his rookie season, New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye has a variety of things he needs to work on from a fundamentals standpoint as he looks to transition himself to the next level.
His footwork is one big issue he needs that has been discussed, along with the fact that he was also a bit notorious for throwing off his back foot while making throws.
The latter situation is similar to what we saw from Mac Jones, albeit Maye was able to get away with it because, unlike Jones, he’s so much stronger that he was often able to still complete the pass.

Brian Hoyer spoke about the topic of a rookie QB's footwork, and his own experience. Hoyer mentioned the following:

Hoyer said when he came out of college, he also had similar issues, but his footwork got better pretty quickly given how “focused we were on it,” in the NFL, as compared with college.
“I think in college, you have to remember there’s so much limited time those coaches have with the players,” Hoyer said. “When they get out to practice, it’s about getting ready for the games.
“So, I think watching (Maye’s) footwork, there’s some stuff in the pocket he can definitely improve on, and I think that’s totally doable.”

Those are things that simply take time, and the hope is that New England’s offensive line will get to a point where Maye will have more time to operate. Those throws often come when the protection breaks down, which ultimately contributed to Jones regression. That’s something they’ve already begun making moves toward avoiding this time around, addressing the offensive line twice last weekend as part of Maye’s 2024 Patriots Draft class.

While there is so much focus on Maye - and understandably so - the production of the offensive line is going to be the real determination of the success of the Pats offense in 2024, in my opinion.
Good run blocking will prevent opposing pass rushers from teeing off on the QB.
Good pass blocking that gives him an extra half second will make the difference between a sack/pick or a first down throw.
Maye and Brissett will get all the credit or blame, but it's the OL that will determine their success. Hopefully the Caedan Wallace experiment turns out well, and Cole Strange rebounds from his knee surgery.

This is the more interesting fun fact that I was highlighting:

---

The nearly 6’5? former Tarheel certainly checks the boxes when it comes to the physical tools, and he’s also extremely athletic. His ability to get out of the pocket and also make plays with his feet caused him to draw comparisons to Buffalo’s Josh Allen, with Maye also using his size to his advantage in college as he ran upfield.

But apparently, there was a stretch where Maye, who is also a former high school basketball star, had a tendency to try and leap over defenders due to his vertical leap and his athleticism.

Former high school teammate and friend Duwe Ferris told the Charlotte Observer that it was something that coaches had to repeatedly tell Maye to stop doing because he was still doing it at the college level at times at North Carolina.

“In high school, he would always try to jump over people, and he did because he was so much bigger,” said Farris. “So there are all these great plays where it looks like he is just dunking the football over somebody on a QB run. “But then in college, his coaches were like, ‘You cannot do that.’ It took him a while, I think, to get it out of his system.”

Wes Welker

Happy 43rd birthday to Wes Welker
Born May 1, 1981 in Oklahoma City
Patriot WR/PR, 2007-2012; uniform #83

Acquired via trade with Miami for a second and seventh round draft pick on March 5, 2007

During six seasons with the Pats, Welker was an All-Pro twice, selected to the Pro Bowl five consecutivetimes, and led the NFL in receptions three times. He averaged 112 receptions, 1,1243 yards receiving, six touchdowns and 1,512 all purpose yards per year during his time with the Patriots. Wes also holds the record for the team's longest play from scrimmage, one that will never be broken: a 99-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady against Miami on September 12, 2011.

Though the Pats did not win a Superbowl during that time, they did go 74-20 (.787) with two conference championships during that span. Welker holds the franchise record for career receptions (672), is second in receiving yards (7,459), fifth in all-purpose yardage (9,070) and eighth in TD receptions (37). In addition he is second all-time for most career 100-yard receiving games (28) and 100-yard receiving games in a season (8). He not only holds the team's single season record for receptions (123), he also ranks 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in that category. Welker ranks 21st all time in NFL history with 903 career receptions and 17th with 16,797 career all-purpose yards.

Other May 1 Birthdays

Happy 30th birthday to Eric Saubert
Born May 1, 1994 in Chicago
Patriot TE, 2019 training camp; uniform #41
Acquired in trade with Atlanta for conditional seventh round pick on August 12, 2019

With Rob Gronkowski retiring on March 24, 2019, New England's group of tight ends was not exactly imposing. Two months later a 39-year old over the hill Ben Watson came out of retirement, and immediately became the Pats number one tight end. The rest of that group included seventh round draftee Ryan Izzo, blocking TE Eric Tomlinson and castoff Matt LaCosse. To say the Pats were desperate for help at the position would be like saying water is wet.

Saubert had spent two full seasons with Atlanta, appearing in all but two games. He was low on the depth chart however, getting little playing time on offense (17% of the club's snaps in 2018) compared to special teams (504 snaps in two seasons).

Despite the lack of quality competition for a roster spot, Saubert was waived on August 31, 19 days after he was signed. Since then he has committed to short term rentals, playing for Oakland, Chicago, Jacksonville, Denver, Miami, Dallas and Houston; he most recently signed with San Francisco on April 8.

Other pro football players with New England connections born on this date:
- Jackson Keefer: tailback for the 1926 Providence Steamrollers, who is also an alumnus of Brown University.
- Rudy Romboli; born and raised in Everett, Romboli was a fullback in the 1940s for the Boston Yanks.
- Bob Marques; the Medford born Marques grew up in Everett and was a Boston University graduate before playing six games at linebacker in the AFL's inaugural season for the New York Titans.
- Terry Rennaker; born in Newport, Rennaker appeared in 15 games for the Seahawks in 1980.
- Bruce McGonnigal; born in Cambridge, the TE played in two games for the Browns in 1991.
- Erny Pinckert: wingback for Boston Braves was named to two Pro Bowls.

Besides Curtis Martin, three other Hall of Famers were born May 1:
- Ollie Matson; All-Pro RB for Chicago Cardinals in each of his first five NFL seasons.
- Chuck Bednarik; 8-time Pro Bowl LB/C for the Philadelphia Eagles known for his vicious hits, including one that knocked Frank Gifford out - not just for a game, but out of the NFL for a year and a half.
- Cliff Battles; tailback for the Boston Braves in the 1930s.

Trading up for Irving Fryar, and other May 1 Drafts

May 1, 1984:
Day One (rounds 1-3) of the NFL Draft, from the Omni Park Central Hotel in NYC
New England ended the 1983 season with two first round picks, plus their own second and third.
Prior to the draft he Pats traded up 15 spots, sending 1.16, 1.28, 10.265 and a 1985 first to Cincinnati for the first overall pick.

- 1.01 -- WR Irving Fryar, Nebraska
- 1.16 -- sent to Bengals to trade up for Fryar (Pats own pick)
- 1.28 -- sent to Bengals to trade up for Fryar (Pick received from Oakland for Mike Haynes)
- 2.43 -- LB Ed Williams, Texas
- 3.70 -- RB Jonathan Williams, Penn State

The Patriots would have been better served standing still, with far too many other positions in need of an upgrade to make this trade. On top of that giving up three firsts (one came from the Mike Haynes trade) for one is not a good value, and using the number one overall pick on a wide receiver is never a good idea. It took Ed Williams four seasons to break into the starting lineup, and he finished his career with just ten NFL starts. Jon Williams blew out his knee in his rookie off season, abruptly ending his pro football career.

Uggh.

May 1, 1985:
Day Two (rounds 4-12) of the NFL Draft, from the Omni Park Central Hotel in Manhattan

On Day One the Pats traded down with San Francisco. The 49ers used that pick on Jerry Rice; the Pats used their pick on Trevor Matich, a center who couldn't crack the starting lineup and became a long snapper. In the second round the Patriots drafted DE Garin Veris, CB Jim Bowman and DE Ben Thomas; in the third they took CB Audrey McMillian.

- 4.102 -- OT Tom Toth, Western Michigan
- (Pats traded Shelby Jordan to Oakland for 4.108 on 9/6/83)
- 4.108 -- WR Gerard Phelan, Boston College
- (Pats traded 5.109 as part of 1984 trade up for Irving Fryar)
- (Pats previously traded 6.156 to Philadelphia for K Tony Franklin on 2/22/84)
- (Pats lost 7.188 as compensation for tampering with Oakland scout John Polonchek)
- (Pats previously traded 7.192 and Mike Haynes to Oakland for '84 1.28 and '85 2.52)
- (Pats previously traded 8.215 to Atlanta for S Rod McSwain on 8/27/84)
- (Pats previously traded Matt Cavanaugh to 49ers for 8.224 and '86 7th, on 8/10/83)
- 8.224 -- DT Milford Hodge, Washington State
- (Pats previously traded 9.242 to Pittsburgh for TE Greg Hawthorne on 8/21/84)
- (Pats previously traded 10.269 to Denver for P Luke Prestridge on 8/20/84)
- 11.295 - RB Paul Lewis, Boston University
- 12.328 - RB Tony Mumford, Penn State

As a result of previous trades the Pats ended with just four selections in the final nine rounds. Hodge was the only draftee to ever play for the Patriots (49 games from 1986-89) - but he was initially cut, signed by New orleans, then re-signed a year later. Phelan was of course the receiver who caught Doug Flutie's famous Hail Mary touchdown for BC against Miami; he dislocated his kneecap very early in his rookie training camp, prematurely ending his pro football career.

May 1, 2015:
Day Two (rounds 2-3) of the NFL Draft, from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago

- Pats trade down, sending 3.96 and 7.219 to Cleveland for 4.111 (Tre' Jackson), 5.147 (Brett Hundley) and 6.202 (AJ Derby).
- 3.97 -- Compensatory pick awarded for free agency loss of CB Aqib Talib.
- 3.97 -- DE Geneo Grissom, Oklahoma

May 1, 2021:
Day Three (rounds 4-7) of the NFL Draft, from Cleveland Browns Stadium

The Pats previously drafted QB Mac Jones, DT Christian Barmore and DE Ronnie Perkins.

- 4.120 -- RB Rhamonde Stevenson, Oklahoma
- Pats previously traded OT Marcus Cannon, 5.158 and 6.195 to Houston for 4.122 and 6.188, on 3/17/2021.
- On the previous day the Pats traded up, sending 2.46, 4.122 and 4.139 to Cincinnati for 2.38 (Barmore)
- 4.139 -- Compensatory pick awarded for free agency loss of Jamie Collins.
- 5.177 -- Compensatory pick awarded for free agency loss of Kyle Van Noy.

- Pats previously traded up, sending 2020 4.125, 2020 4.129 and 2021 6.186 to the Jets for 2020 3.101 (Dalton Keene), on 4/24/20.
- 6.188 -- S Joshua Bledsoe, Missouri
- 6.197 -- OT William Sherman, Colorado
- 7.242 -- Tre Nixon, Central Florida

The two sides would not come to a contract agreement until September, after the end of preseason games.

May 1, 1978:
The Pats sign a pair of undrafted free agents: K Tom Birney and G Val Belcher - neither of whom made the Pats roster.
Birney would go on to kick for Green Bay for two seasons.
Belcher spent four years in the CFL, winning a Grey Cup with Winnipeg. He then retired from pro football and founded a 20-restaurant chain in the Ottawa area named Lone Star Texas Grill.

May 1, 1995:
New England signs eight rookie free agents; all but one make it onto an NFL roster.

Howard RB Rupert Grant played in seven games with one start for the Patriots.
Boston College RB David Green saw action in a pair of games.
Angelo State TE Andre President was on the pratice squad and got on the field for one game with the Pats.

May 1, 2006:
The Patriots sign eight undrafted free agents.

Virginia TE Jonathan Stupar was waived, but did spend two full seasons with the Bills.
Liberty DL Vince Redd was on the Pats practice squad, then spent time in the CFL, Arena League, and German Football League.

May 1, 2009:
The Patriots sign three undrafted players, one of whom made it to the Pats roster.
Michigan State QB Brian Hoyer was considered to be a late round prospect; the Pats quickly signed him after he went undrafted. At that point in time nobody figured that he his NFL career would outlast his hairline.

May 1, 2012:
The Pats hire Bob Quinn as Director of Pro Scouting.
A graduate of Norwood High School and UConn, Quinn got his start with the Pats at the age of 24 as a low level Player Personnel Assistant. He worked his way up the ranks to Pro Scout, Regional Scout, National Scout and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel before assuming this position. Quinn was GM with Detroit for five years, and is now in the Cleveland Browns front office.
