I do recall some here on this forum, sometime in the recent past, questioning if it would be better to trade Judon. The rationale was that Judon will soon turn 32 and the Pats are in a multi-year upgrade. The team could receive draft capital which would help them in the long term to fill one of the many holes that need an upgrade. By the time the club gets better he will likely be on the decline. On top of that the defense performed just fine without him last year.

On the other hand the Pats have plenty of money to spend. Judon is a team leader, and not paying him sends a negative message not just to current teammates, but also to future free agents considering signing with New England.

To me if the Patriots were not going to extend Judon, then they should have already traded him, prior to the 2024 draft. That ship has sailed, so they should go ahead and extend him now.

Even if the record is dismal, one key for this year is that the team learns how to win. Players like Judon can help set the tone for the younger players to show the importance of continuing to give good effort and learning how to be professionals. With plenty of cap room, keeping him around is an easy decision.

I don’t agree with Bedard. I rarely do anymore. He says as long as RT is settled the Pats will figure out LT but Wallace shouldn’t be an option at RT? Why not? He played RT at a high level for a long time in college. Maybe he looks really good there in practice? Maybe they are happy with the competition at LT? What he calls fallout, maybe the Pats call a good situation? I’m not as concerned about tackle as Bedard. It’s only June.

“And as long as you’re good at right tackle, you can figure out the left side, and you can find somebody to play guard, it’s not a five alarm fire. But to spend almost all of mandatory minicamp with Caedan Wallace at right tackle with very few looks at left tackle to me signifies that he is going to be a right tackle.” “He’s a third-round pick. They’re going to want to play him,” said Bedard of Wallace. “The fallout from that, I’m worried about it.”

I'm not sure what to make of Bedard's comments about Onwenu's weight.

Is this another case of a pro athlete receiving a big contract, and taking the foot off the gas? Onwenu never came across to me like a player with that type of attitude, but what do I know. The last thing the Pats need is another starting tackle with Trent Smith effort.

Hopefuly this is just anothe case of a sportswriter throwing some speculation up against the wall in order to get the conversation and debate flowing.

He also noted that Onwenu didn’t appear to report in great shape, which is another reason why he’s concerned with where things are at.
“He’s a third-round pick. They’re going to want to play him,” said Bedard of Wallace. “The fallout from that, I’m worried about it. I also think there’s an offshoot of Mike Onwenu, to my eyes, my laymen’s eyes, I don’t think that he reported in great shape. When he talked about in the offseason that he was going to train for right tackle, I figured we’d see a slimmed-down version of big Mike. Slightly – I’m not expecting him to lose 50 pounds and he’s never been a small guy – but I’m officially worried. I was already worried about left tackle, but I figured the right side would be O.K. But now I’m worried about the right side too.

Bedard is indeed throwing **** against the wall, it's what he does often, these days.
