With Mac Jones still sidelined with an injury, New England Patriots fans have been debating various stats, including little nuances within the offense where they believe one may excel over another. One topic of discussion that's come up in recent days has been who does a better job in terms of targeting a larger number of receivers, with some believing that rookie Bailey Zappe has been better about spreading the ball around compared to Jones.

Sometimes, the numbers tell us the same thing our eyes do: Zappe is modestly but significantly outplaying Mac.

Add to the above the marked difference in int's (Zappe is responsible for none.), and Zappe should be playing, unless all the palaver over the years about playing time being based on merit was just a lot of happy talk.

I would love to see Zappe vs Buffalo or the Jets.

If he folds up then you know his ceiling.
 
I have to cop to being a big fan of the "Mac spreads the ball around" concept. I made the classic mistake of remembering the most recent game and taking it to be representative.

(Also, the classic mistake of taking "things I like," for example, zero culpable interceptions, and letting them stand in for "other things I like," like spreading the ball around, when I run all the games together in my mind. Not to mention forgetting that one game where Mac discovered the existence of Davante Parker, effectively doubling the number of "number 1 guys" he had to throw to.)
