Monday Patriots Notebook 4/1: News and Notes
Ian Logue
Last week's Pro Days where the Patriots evaluated both Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, seem to have shifted the narrative in terms of who New England should be considering among quarterbacks. So far, it sounds like Maye is building some momentum.

Attention for Maye is because few think that the best choice Daniels will not be available at the Patriots draft slot.

Maye will need special attention in his first year with the Pats and might start a game in his 2nd season unless there is an injury to other QBs during his first year.

I think the NFL is becoming overly reactive if they are attempting to keep the average score of a game at 45 ppg. One or two points below this mysterious magical number is not something to be concerned about. Did they pick that number out of thin air?

Perhaps it would be wiser to focus on keeping fans interested in a product that used to take less than 3 hours to complete, to one that now drags on for closer to three and a half hours. Excessively long games is what turned people away from baseball, until MLB implemented the pitch clock - a vast improvement for that sport. Don't be so smug to think that fans won't care how long the game takes to play, as long as there is lots of offense and little to no defense.

Ben Volin had an interesting note in his Sunday column, with the owner’s meetings last week revealing that the league is concerned with its recent drop in scoring. The 2023 season was apparently the second-straight in which leaguewide scoring was below the NFL’s preferred threshold of 45 points per game. Volin noted that NFL games averaged 43.5 points in 2023 and 43.8 in 2022, down from 46.0 in 2021 and a record 49.6 in 2020. “The only issue that we’ve raised a little bit is scoring, because scoring has trended itself down,” said Falcons CEO and chairman of the league’s competition committee, Rich McKay. “We get nervous when you start going down.” Volin adds that only four seasons in the past 15 years have produced fewer than 44 points per game: 2009, 2017, 2022, and 2023.

Kraft said he was staying out of the Draft decisions. Not true, both he and his son are in it up to their ass. Just like with Mac Jones. Belichick is gone so blame him for everything, and when Kraft decided to dump Bill he knew he had an out, blame Bill for everything.

The Pats could start this season with Brissett and Zappe and get a QB for 2025. Like Prescott from the Cowboys or a draft choice or another choice. Kick the can down the road this season trying to build a team that a good QB could step into. The push for a QB is Kraft but that's BS he wants fans in the seats.
