My thoughts on financial viability of possible Peppers trade

Re: Peppers Deal Financially Unlikely (Riess)

I would like to see Peppers here. In fact i posted after the Cassel tade that the next part was getting Peppers. But after thinking about the financial aspect of it(I didn't know Peppers was makin 17 mill +) i don't know how the Pats would manage it. And "it" isn't the CBA, its the cost of paying Wilfork Seymour and Peppers. Some, a lot of poeple her think Seymour is a jag i'm not one of them. Hes been playing hurt for a couple of years. Last season he had 8-8.5 sacks thats the Seymour of old you don't get rid of players that are constantly double and triple teamed and still have those kind of numbers. So i now doubt if we get Peppers,it wouldn't shock me and i'd like to see it happen but he makes over 17 million a year. Thats a lot to squeeze.or even renegotiate into the salary cap. Unless BB think next year Will be uncapped and he can afford to pay all three.

Re: Peppers Deal Financially Unlikely (Riess)

I remember reading that in the rules under the current CBA. I want to say that a player can't be traded after re-signing till 12 months after signing the contract. It doesn't sound right after I typed it, but I'm pretty sure that any signing bonus given to a player by a team is not transferred to the team the player is traded to. So in this case, if the Panthers signed Pepper to a 5 year 65 mil contract with a signing bonus of 15 mil, the Panthers would be on the line for the signing bonus (of which would impact them all in one year).

Feel free to correct my mistakes.

No, it's that a player can't renegotiate a contract with a team more than once in a 12-month period. There is, AFAIK, nothing explicitly preventing a team from restructuring a player's contract and then immediately trading him.

nah, he doesn't make 17m, and wilfork's cheap right now.

I'll admit, I have no idea how they fit him in, but it's not as bad as it looks at first glance ---- maybe they need to clear ~5m(??) which is tough, but certainly more possible than 17.
of course there'd be issues the next few years, but all that is for the next few years to sort out.

this doesn't add up. roller coaster city but i can't see it happening.

why throw 2 mil a year at Mike Wright if you're going to do this? what about the money they spent on Fred Taylor even? why spend that if you're thinking you'd have to fit a guy like Peppers under the cap.

you know it's really possible that Carolina played Carrucci here to drive up interest in Peppers. there may be no conversations whatsoever.

If pats get pep I think jarvis will be released or packaged along with the 34th pick. There wouldn't be a purpose for him on this team. Plus the the pats would save about 4 or 5 million by getting rid of em.

I agree about that part -- the timing's kind of odd, but who knows what's going on.
you'd think this would be the first deal to get done, but didn't they restructure moss to squeeze out an extra million....?
maybe they knew they'd need it.

edit: according to miguel's most excellent salary page, the pats only save ~2m on green.

Keary Colbert?

The problem with the premise of this argument is, Peppers hasn't signed the franchise tender yet. So technically, any dealings that may happen aren't necessarily going to be within the framework of a franchise trade. This is probably why he's refused to sign, and it would explain the Panthers' statement today. I have no idea what the wiggle room here is legally, according to the CBA, but technically the Panthers could just withdraw the offer, which hasn't been signed yet, and the Patriots ship them the 34th pick. Peppers at that point already has a deal on the table with the Pats, conditional on the franchise tag having been lifted, and he's a free agent suddenly with a deal on the table from the Pats. I can see a few areas of exposure here for the Pats, but it's the most feasible possibility provided we want to go with "where there's smoke there's fire" as regards to the original article.

In this scenario, there would have to have been some communication perhaps between the Pats and Carolina regarding the swap of no.34 for the un-franchising of Peppers.

This is the correct answer right here. Peppers has not signed the franchise tag offer. That tag can be pulled at any time. And there is no restricition/limitation/requirement for the Patriots to meet with the new Peppers contract.

Page 42

(d) Any of the required tenders set forth in this Section 2 may be withdrawn at any time, but if such
tender is withdrawn, the player immediately becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent and thereafter is completely
free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, and any Club shall be completely free to negotiate
and sign a Player Contract with any such player, without any penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to,
Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period.

just a question. with this uncapped year. can you restructure a contract e.g brady moss wilfork seymour peppers e.t.c your best players to all get a huge amount that year then just normal cap numbers the next 4 years e.t.c and there by making your team unbelieveable. if i didn;'t explain myself well here is another way. is say peppers wanted a 7 year 100 million deal we sign him then go this year 3 million then in the uncapped year 35 million then the next year 3 million e.t.c. i know its an extreme example but is that sort of thing possible if your team is rich enough?

You can definitely play serious games with the uncapped year.

But in 2011 and beyond, cap hits will be calculated based on the new CBA.

If many deals are signed using any particular loophole, the league can decide to negotiate for language in the new CBA that closes the loophole.

The only problem with this is that Peppers would then be free to sign with ANY team.

Peppers IS free to sign with ANY team right now, until he signs the tag. That team would just owe Carolina 2 1sts.

Basically, the Pats would sign peppers, contingent on a trade releasing them of the obligation of 2 1sts.
