My guess on what the Pats do on draft day (rounds 1 & 2)

I expect a move or even two to be made by the Pats this draft, I dont think they will move back I think there either going to trade up for a targeted player or somehow acquire a 1st round pick in the 2010 draft. Lets say they stay put and put there picks into use, heres what I project to happen.

With the 23rd pick I think the Pats would prefer to go ILB, never say never but Id be shocked if Bruschi played beyond the 09 season. A replacement is needed this year to be groomed while hes still here. Mayo turned out to be a hell of a player but we all know Bruschi and the rest of the gang were a big help to his success. Lets not forget Vrabz is already gone so he wont be here next year for advice either.

With the 34th pick the Pats go pass rush, this is the biggest need and wouldnt be surprised to see the Pats use the 23rd pick on a pass rushing OLB but this is a deep draft with those olb rushers. Barwin is too risky for me at this pick, I no he had a hell of a season last year but lets not forget it was his first year playing defense, too much unknown to make a fair projection on Barwin as an olb so the Pats pass on him. I think Larry English is still available and the Pats get the rusher they want and need.

With the 47th pick Im gonna be honest I dont know if the Pats go with a tackle or DE. Im confident it will be one of those positions just not sure which one, im sure it depends on which player is available and whos higher on the Pats draft board.

With the 58th pick I think they go with whichever S they like best, I expect Delmas to be gone so its between either R. Johnson, P. Chung or W. Moore.

To be honest I dont watch lots of college football but from what I've read and heard there isn't that one dominant defensive player coming out except for Curry and maybe even Raji, but im guessing ones a top 5 and the others a top 10 pick so no probably not. Id sit at the 23rd pick.

My best guess:

1. We stand pat at 23 unless someone specific falls past 15 (BJ Raji or possibly Malcolm Jenkins). If multiple players we like are available at 23 and the right deal is available, we could move down a few spots.

2. Unless the draft falls out so that we hit with our top choices at all 4 first day picks, I see us trading one of the 3 second rounders into 2010, preferably for a 2010 1st round pick. With that many picks and so much depth in the draft, if our top picks are gone at a particular level then I don't see us just taking the BVA for the sake of it; rather, we will trade into 2010. We could also trade around within the 2nd round to target specific players.

3. We end up with a minimum of an OLB and a DB out of the first day, and probably a DL as well. If we keep the 4th pick I see OL as the most likely possibility, unless a specific RB or WR falls to us. A second LB or DB is also a possibility, though less likely.

I personally probably wouldn't trade up for him, hence the word "possibly". If BB were convinced that he would be another Ty Law at CB then a small trade up would be warranted.

What skills does Jenkins have. He has terrific size, better than average ball skills, great ability to read plays, is a playmaker, is terrific in run support, and is a high character guy and a leader who has consistently won at every level. He also has a blazing 3-cone which belies his slow 40 time, and he has never played slow. He has no red flags and is considered the most level-headed and stable top CB prospect to come out in years. He also offers versatility at FS. I can probably think of a few more skills, but I think that would be enough to make him at least worth considering in a small trade up scenario - not if he goes top 15 as the cost would be high, but if he falls past the Texans then I would think seriously about it. Denver could easily end up grabbing him at 18 and either pairing him with Champ Bailey or having Brian Dawkins tutor him at FS. Either option would be nasty.

Most likely yes. I think that he is a very safe 1st round pick who also offers tremendous value. Secure him at 23 and then trade around and take some gambles on high upside players in the 2nd round (Barwin, Delmas, Gilbert, Sean Smith, William Moore, Beatty, depending on who is available and who you prefer).

If Leigh Bodden reverts to anything like his Cleveland form, Bodden and Jenkins would be a heck of a CB combo, with Wheatley and Wilhite as the nickel and dime. Hobbs would likely move on after 2009 in that scenario.

I like the thought process here. Evander Hood at 23- Larry English at 34-either Eric Wood or best safety at 47-maybe Pat White at 58-Mitch King-Bear Pascoe-Graham Gano-Stanley Arnoux-Tim Jamison-roster candidates .

*Last year at this time several magazines had Mayo rated as a #50-60 player on big boards. He went #10 overall. Anthing can happen. Is it at all possible the Pat's are so enamoured with Pat White that they would call his name at 23? That would blow me away-but you never know.
