Musings Regard The OL

Wilson/Richards would seem to be an obvious pair of safeties who undercut the above position.
You mean that you didn't have eugene wilson, tavon wilson and richards rated as a second?

BTW, Tavon is still playing, and playing pretty well.

Tavon hasn't been playing pretty well. Tavon's been crap.

But that's besides the point of what was being posted, which was the idea that grabbing the players certainly wouldn't happen until BB started taking fliers in about the 4th round. While it's possible that we won't seen OTs taken before the 4th round (or at any time in the draft, for that matter), we've seen time and again that BB takes fliers at least as early as the second round.

I understand. However, it isn't clear that these players weren't rated very highly by belichick.

That's irrelevant to the posts. If we're going to argue that, let's just bring up the old falsehood about there being no such things as

Fliers
Steals
Reaches
Player drops

and the like, and that the draft is just a crapshoot (which people will then somehow argue that BB is among the best at). It's an annual tradition to do that around here, after all.

And even as early as late First Round, as 2014 sadly demonstrated.

as i recall, Belichick did pretty well with the next 3 picks. Dwelling on one pick just isn't very useful IMHO,

Why isn't it useful, given the context of the discussion, which is about taking fliers early, not whether or not said picks, or subsequent picks are hits?

Hell, with regards specifically to 2014, BB took a flier on a pick when a quality alternative (Tuitt) was available, then drafted a player who was all but useless in the grand scheme of things (backup QB for the GOAT), outside of the machinations of Goodell & Co., when that pick could have just as easily been WR help (Jarvis Landry was taken with the very next pick).

Looks like the Broncos acquired Jared veldheer from Arizona for a sixth.

...Or, and this is what I preferred, Bill uses 29 on OL Joel Bitonio,

2014 NFL Draft Profile: Joel Bitonio

who, like Mankin$, was a college LT that was on the low end of ideal LT size & strength, but on the high end of athleticism & nasty, a natural backup/replacement at LG & like Mankins an adequate backup/emergency at LT...and this was even before Mankin$ was traded to Tampa.

Salary dump, supposedly owed $10M this season. He'll be the Donkeys' new RT, opposite LT Garett Bolles. At that price Bill was probably not interested, even for just a 6th-rounder.
Arizona is now almost certainly in the LT business during the draft...same as us.

It’s naturally a positive that 2017 Patriots third-round pick Antonio Garcia said on Instagram that he has been cleared to play football (he reportedly had blood clots in his lungs) after missing his rookie season, which puts him into the mix as a possible answer to the biggest question facing the team: Who starts at left tackle? Garcia lost considerable weight and has a lot of ground to make up. Consider that 2017 undrafted free-agent offensive lineman Cole Croston -- who made a steady impression in training camp and preseason to earn a roster spot and is a potentially ascending player -- went through 107 practices last season, not to mention that Croston played 223 snaps in the preseason, competing admirably at both left tackle (notably versus Giants fifth-round pick Avery Moss) and right guard. That’s a lot of development that Garcia missed, and though he can certainly overcome it, here’s another thought after revisiting some preseason tape over the past week: Don’t sleep on the 6-foot-5, 315-pound Croston, who caught offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia’s attention with his combination of smarts, toughness and athleticism, making a legitimate push for the top spot. He could be the next undrafted blocker to develop and take on a larger role on the line, following the likes of other School of Scarnecchia graduates Tom Ashworth, Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell, Josh Kline and David Andrews.

How two Patriots cornerbacks from different eras made a connection
