More stupidity from ESPN

The paranoia about ESPN on this site is unbelievable. Nobody is going to spend a lot of highlight time on Matt Cassel and Deltha O'Neal on a day when there's a World Series game and a host of other NFL games on. This was a pretty dull game against a very mediocre St. Louis team that was playing without its marquee attraction. The only truly exciting plays were committed by St. Louis. You all have to think about this rationally. Boston is one of the top 4 or 5 markets ESPN has. If there was any real hint of anti-Patriots bias in their coverage, management would stomp it out instantly. They covered Spygate to death because that is what TV program directors do, always: they cover scandal stories. You think they cover TO or Chad Johnson's blabberings to death because they have particular feelings about their teams? If anything the the Spygate coverage wasn't driven by anti- new England bias but by a desire to attract women and non sports-fans to the network. Human interest and scandal stories are the tried-and-true method of bringing in "casual" viewers to any corner/niche of the programming universe, whether it's politics or sports. Now I get that you might not like that decision-making, but it's crazy to suggest that this is somehow bias against New England or the Patriots. ESPN spends half of its baseball coverage blowing the Red Sox and it's similarly worshipful of the Celtics. Try being a Kansas City Royals fan or a Buffalo Bills fan and see how much coverage of any kind, good or bad, your team gets on ESPN.

I mean really. This stuff is getting old. Can this site go even ten minutes without some long thread in which dozens of people line up to whine about something? You'd think these were fans of a losing team.

Seriously buddy, do you work for them??

i know tommy said espn was like mtv but i think of it more as the comedy channel.

Seriously buddy, do you work for them??

No, I don't work for them. But it's very funny -- and characteristic of the paranoia on this board -- that you think I might.

You guys are ridiculous. Try reading ESPN contributor chats for any sport. Every single fan base in the country thinks ESPN is "biased" against their team. In fact, most other fan bases in the country are convinced that ESPN is biased TOWARDS Boston and New York, among other things because those are the two biggest sports markets in the country and because the company headquarters is located in Connecticut. It doesn't take a whole lot of work to find conspiracy theories of this type on the net ( try ESPN... Biased? • Deadgrunt's Blog - FOX Sports Blogs and Polis Politics: Commentary: ESPN's Yankee Stadium Tribute Uncalled For and East coast sports network (my beef with ESPN) (Wizbang Sports) and MLB Playoffs - Page 4 - Home Brew Forums -- I could go on forever). It also isn't hard, believe it or not, to find New Yorkers who think ESPN is biased against New York and towards Boston alone (see This Purist Bleeds Pinstripes: 'Roid Rage and Reportage, or Something Like It and Sugar, Mr. Poon? Comments ). You see whining about ESPN's pro-Boston bias even on Yankee fan boards (Yankees Chick: No ESPN bias? Yeah right. ).

The number of fan bases who believe that their team is specifically, intentionally disrespected by ESPN for some secret demonic reason is just awe-inspiring. There are Sonics fans who blame the move on ESPN ( OT: ESPN Fiddles While the Sonics Burn Stadium Way). People from St. Louis and Milwaukee are convinced ESPN is biased toward the Cubs -- it's just an accident that the Cubs happen to have won the pennant and got more coverage for that reason. Midwesterners in general think ESPN is biased toward the coasts. The network itself, responding seriously to these accusations, conducted a poll in which 70% of respondents said they believed the media had a bias in favor of East Coast teams (ESPN - Geography lesson: Breaking down the bias in ESPN's coverage - Columnist ).

The whole "ESPN is biased against my team" whine is so much of a cliche in the sports world that it's become a running joke IN ESPN COVERAGE. I mean really. Have you even read the site lately? When Keith Law or David Thorpe or John Hollinger goes two chat questions without mentioning the Twins or the Royals or the Lakers or whoever, he starts getting flamed from morons like you people. Now it's just a joke on the board (ESPN: Chat with Scout's Inc.'s Keith Law - SportsNation ).

How any fan of any Boston sports team could think ESPN is biased against Boston when three of their top guys (Bill Simmons, Peter Gammons, and Chris Berman) are completely, openly in the tank for Boston sports teams is beyond me. Did you guys forget about that lineup? How about Jim Caple, another Boston sports fan? How about Buster Olney, who lavishes praise on the Red Sox every time he goes on the air? Olney used to cover the Yankees and clearly didn't enjoy the experience. As for Berman... my God, he's an openly drooling Patriots fan. He goes to Pats practices for fun.

But those are just the facts. The real issue is what a bunch of sorry whiners you people are. Your team has won 3 Super Bowls this decade and has been the dynasty team of the era. You've twice won 20 regular-season games in a row. Your star player gets hurt this year and the team has miraculously stayed in contention with a quarterback who hadn't played since high school. And you STILL CAN'T ENJOY being Pats fans! You have to find something to complain about! Get over it! The world is not against you. ESPN doesn't give a damn about you one way or another, so long as you keep watching their advertisers' commercials and stuffing your face with Doritos and $5-footlong Subway sandwiches.

Thanks for the compliments. Thanks for lumping all of in the same group, the logic of which mirrored your own argument. Pretty effin' brilliant.

If you were a Pats fan you would always feel as though ESPN stepped on our throats all year long but then you are not.

Did anyone see today's highlights? You would have thought the Pats lost today! Alot of Rams highlights. They went out of their way to show Moss' missed block and the int. that went off of his hands, but failed to mention he had over a hundred yards today. Then the genius of Tom Jackson was put on display when he said that the Pats have become a run first team like they showed today.

In regards to the highlights they tend to do that with most games to make you think the other team won, when it is a close game

Oh, boy. That's reachin'.

But, gotta give it to ya, that's the nuttiest approach to validating ESPN's biased coverage that I've ever seen.

Berman's daughter works at Gillette, so you can count him out. He's cautious.

Check out TJ or Ditka on a Sunday and tell me they don't have a bias. Hell, Ditka openly lobbies that he does not like the team.

He's giving ESPN a pass because the are merely marketing with the lowest common denominator ploy. That's ok. We shouldn't take it personally. It's only about money. Stop whining. Al sound unemotional arguments. He's certainly not emotional at all. Right?

Berman is a Bills fan.

Berman is a Bills fan.

A huge Bills fan.

TJ is a Broncos fan. Ditka is nuts, who knows. Keyshawn is a fan of whomever Parcells is tied to and Carter is too busy Lobbying for a HOF induction to pull for any team.

Wow dude, you're funny.
So, are you in charge of keeping espn's balls clean?

So, what's your explanation for why all these other fans think ESPN is biased against them? Are THEY all wrong, and you're right? You're the truly persecuted ones, right, while they're all frauds? I'm interested to hear this.

No sir, your the wrong one to attempt to use logic with ESPN in the same arugment.

If your a Patriots fan, you should know why we hate them. Its obvious your not.

Thank you for re-affirming my decision to not watch espn (with the exception of actual games involving the Pats, but with the sound off.) I don't know how long it's been (8 months? 10 months?) but I don't miss them at all.

well said, getting away from espn was one of the best decisions i have made this year

i know tommy said espn was like mtv but i think of it more as the comedy channel.

i think it is at about the same level as those scum gossip tabloid shows. it is just a bunch of over the hill retired nfl people mixed in with broadcasters who were not good enough to play at a pro level who sit around and speculate on everything that is going on, beat stories into the ground....and most of them are wrong about stuff on a regular basis.

as i was typing that i started to notice it was kinda like what happens here :/

Clearly, based on your monomania about anything ESPN here, you DO have a financial or carrer vested interest in ESPN.
Too bad...for you.
