More Power Rankings Idiocy

You must have missed the Philly /Steelers butt kicking.

I saw it but i still think the Steelers are the bigger threat in the long run. Anyone can have 1 bad game.

My point was that the Pats were ranked number one the week before, had an impressive victory and yet fell. You appear to be saying that Denver should have held the number one ranking all three weeks.

Denver had the bigger question mark at QB before. Given the level of play they've gotten there, that's not the case coming into this week.

Pittsburgh's O is only going to be strengthened with the addition of Bell this week. Fortunately, they've had a putrid defense for years. Brady doesn't play the O. I'm confident the Pats can beat them and beat them well.

Denver won the SB and looks awesome and scare the crap out of me... So yeah, I get it.
I get it but, the eye test for Simian doesn't look nearly as good as his box score. He's gotten off the hook for multiple stupid plays for defenses dropping easy picks or in Butler's case, suddenly spraining their ankle on the way to an easy pick six.

power rankings are bullsh!t.

That.

Plus, whenever the Pats have been defending SB Champs I've always felt that they should be ranked #1, whatever that might or might not mean, until someone knocked them off and another team showed that it should be at the top.

So, let the Donkeys have their day. The only Ranking that matters is the one that comes out between 10 and 11PM on Super Bowl Sunday.

Are those that vote or determine 'power rankings' looking at
  • solely at the present moment - a snapshot, if you will
  • predicting who will be the best at the end of the season
  • who has been the best teams thus far through X number of games
  • primarily win-loss record and quality of opponent's that were defeated
  • win-loss record and margin of victory
  • fantasy football statistics
  • some come combination of the above

Aside from the fact that these rankings are highly objective, I'm not even sure what these rankings represent.

Despite one of the best wins in Bill Belichick's coaching career, the 27-0 upset thrashing of the Houston Texans, the Patriots fell out of first place in ESPN's Power Rankings. The Broncos, with their victory over Cincinnati, have replaced them. The Power Rankings have always been a laugh to read, but this year the panelists seem more insane than ever. Arizona and Carolina are both 1-2, have not looked good, and are positioned at 5 and 8, respectively.
Its 3th game, the value of the teams shows in december. Last year Atlanta was 5-0

If you think they are BS (which they are) then why do you care what they print? All you have to do is watch any one of the sports media imbeciles on the boob tube and realize that these are the same guys giving you power rankings. [shakes head]

who cares?

it's not like you get a ring or a trophy.

This is a COLTS award

I mean all things considered it's the defending super bowl champions who look to have essentially upgraded at QB while manhandling the defending NFC champs again and beating a likely AFC playoff team. its not exactly a reach is it

pittsburgh could steal one but they dont look built to beat the pats, and is anyone afraid of anyone in the afc south in gillette in january?

seems pretty obvious that the pats and broncos are going to see each other again at some point in the preseason, maybe even an afc championship game for the 3rd of 4 years.

ravens just always have this thing where they play us well as do the jets id prefer if neither of them show up in foxboro during the playoffs but outside of them the broncos are the pats comp in the afc and the talent level is close. going to depend who has the better record, yet again.

Power rankings are for Jet fans. Especially the imaginary August rankings

Eagles have scored the 2nd most and given up the least, they are 3-0 and are ranked 7th. It looks like Power Rankings are as much based on past years performance then this years. I imagine Patriots dropped more because we have 2 injured QB's and no Tom Brady. It's a testament to BB that Patriots are still ranked 2nd.

I think they take into account pre-season expectations. Especially this early in the season.

Eagles are seen to have overachieved and so are rated lower than would be expected based on performance. They have a rookie QB and HC and are expected to regress to the mean at a some point.

Panthers and Cardinals are seen to have underachieved and so are ranked higher than expected based on performance. 2 teams which went deep into the playoffs last year and returned with key pieces still in place.

Consider a few years the Patriots started 1-2, but were almost certainly ranked higher than would be expected from the record since most people would expect BB and Brady to right the ship; as they did and finished 12-4.

So in short in order for Power Rankings to be interesting it has to be possible for a team with a worse record to be ranked above a team with a better record. Otherwise you just end up with a list of teams ordered from best record to worst.

what happened to 'flying under the radar'? or 'playing the disrespect card'?

I've found that reading the Power Rankings (if I even do so) is more fun after we win and make the "experts" look like the fools they are.
