Mock offseason, back to the SB

With Alaric Jackson off the market and the reports that the Ravens are looking to extend Ronnie Stanley my views on how to build the roster has changed.

1. All the strength of FA now is on defense so I think the Patriots should go hard on defense in FA. Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, a free safety and CB2. Maybe Zach Baun too.

2. Use the draft on offense. It's not ideal but the FA options on offense are little more than stop-gaps now. At least by targeting offense in the draft, we'd be building an offense that grows around Drake Maye so that in 2-3 years, it will be a seamless, well-synced offense. At least that would be the goal.

3. The Offense wouldn't be markedly improved but the increased familiarity of Maye with Henry and Douglas will help somewhat, but there would be a distinct improvement on defense.

4. So at 4/38, I would look at LT/WR in some combination whether that be Hunter-Ersery/Conerly or Campbell - Tre Harris/Ayomanor/Higgins. Instead of a general BPA draft it would be an offensive BPA draft.

5. And then target RT (Trapilo?), LG (Milum?), RB and TE/FB in the rest of the draft.

6. This approach doesn't completely preclude signing an offensive player or drafting the odd defensive player.

You had me at "Not ideal "

But I never assumed we would solve our long-term problems through FA. That's just not how it works in the NFL.

The strength of the draft is in the DL. We can be patient and let the draft come to us in rounds 1-3 but then we need to get aggressive to put ourselves in a position to draft as many depth pieces that hopefully we get 1 or 2 to stick.

I'd still look to get a LT in FA. There's Cam who could be had for a fair price. 3/$45

we all know the week 1 starting LT isn't in this draft. But we could get 1 that develops into that long-term.

I am of the opinion that we take some risks. We have our choice of DL prospects that could become future pro bowlers or at least solid starters at the very least. Or we trade down/future picks. In the top 5 I won't accept reaching for guys that don't project to be a starter at a premium position(LT/DL) so I'm looking at Mason Graham or quite possibly a DE like Green/Stewart.

In the 2nd round I am more flexible but the need takes more precedent over want. So I'm targeting Ersery/Simmons over Tre Harris and Trey Amos.

3rd round is where the fun begins. We could be looking at TEs Taylor/Fanin/Ferguson. And DBs Porter/Mukuba. Can't rule out another DL falling into our laps. Darius Alexander/CJ West/Hemingway/Burch.

I'd rather have Campbell over Cam Robinson. Robinson just feels like treading water to me. In the last two games of the season, Robinson gave up 21 pressures. We may as well just hold onto Vederian Lowe and keep the 45m.

We can have both. I'm fully expecting us to draft a LT. I just don't think whoever we draft will be ready to start week one is all. And you know my thoughts on Campbell specifically.

Sounds like Milton Williams is going to Tennessee from all reports.

all things coming out of the combine is membou is rocketing up boards i have seen a few mocks with us taking him at 4

Yeah but he's a RT. ‍

I'd take this...

Perhaps add Craid Woodson, Lampkin and Aeneas Peebles on day 3.

Unfortunately you'll have to remove Sherwood from that list as he's just re-signed with the Jets. And I'm bummed about it because I had started to really like him as an option.
