Patriots Player Departure Mike Reiss: David Andrews to be released (3/13 update: released)

Unnecessary at this point, and ugly. If he wanted a shot at coming back, they owed it to him, at least through some portion of camp. I hate it.
I am hoping this is something like we saw with Edelman a few years ago. Basically Andrews is retiring and this is some bookkeeping to pay out his contract.

Explain to me why we didn't go after Thuney again?
Well, if the reports of them pursuing a center before and now potentially another one now, it might mean that they don't view Strange as one and instead of will leave him at LG. Of course, Thuney is way better, but at the same time Strange is good enough that it makes sense not to want to allocate big money to replacing him now and instead give him a chance to come into his own in a new system.

David Andrews was a good guy, a consummate Patriots UDFA to starter for many years, I have to trust the Vrabel & Co. have a plan to replace him and his leadership...

Not that there is a first rounder at C, but I’d be shocked if they don’t take a look at the draft for this position.

Agreed. I would rather pick through the trash on practice squads then pay a guy who can't block or stay healthy $17 million. Bill compounded so many mistakes that culminated in Cole Strange I would rather he not be on the roster than adding another mistake to the pile.

he had one injury, played through it, it impacted performance.....when healthy he graded well???

For a guy who got drafted high because he's a great athlete he had a major knee injury. Who knows how that will limit his athleticism going forward? When it comes to linemen I don't know what to believe as far as metrics and grades and all that but for his limited time at center last year PFF graded him 61st out of 64 centers and coming into the season PFF had him ranked as the 32nd best guard. When he was healthy he was inconsistent and while I don't think he's a terrible player I don't think he's a good one either. Strange is mediocre and now is coming off a knee injury.

I mean I don't want to panic but I'm kind of panicked lol.
Nah it will be fine. By the time training camp comes around, you will be very pleased with what's on the line. If you aren't then they have failed and I don't see Vrabel going into a season getting Maye killed.

That's generally how I felt, but I think they just wanted to see Strange at center. He's a FA after the year so this is their only shot to get a look at him there before they have to decide on re-signing him or not. I don't think it would have been fair to bring Andrews back in a "sham" competition where they knew going in they wanted to get a look at Strange as a center.

But otherwise, yeah, I thought he deserved to go down fighting if that's what he wanted.
They could have seen Strange at center even keeping Andrews in camp. If he wanted to compete for his job, after all his exemplary service, they owed him a shot at doing so.

David Andrews is a very Good player and Teammate: let's hope Cole Strange plays as well. Andrews didn't play like a UDFA: Time for Strange to start playing like a First Rounder.

My favorite David Andrews memory was a clip they showed at a Super Bowl after party with Kraft and everyone there and I think his shirt was completely unbuttoned and he was pounding beers and doing a little drunk dance like a mad man. I thought it was great.

My guess is Andrews learned that his shoulder is shot and couldn’t play anymore. They simply released him to allow him to get his money.

I just can’t see Vrabel consistently talking about culture, relationships and characters guys and coldly cutting the player that embodies those values the best.
