Somewhere out there, Mack Brown is laughing his ass off at this clown show.

I doubt that. He's probably as sad/pissed as those of us who love that place and the people there. Chapel Hill is about so much more than football on Saturdays.

Bill Belichick should be ashamed to walk into the UNC Athletic Complex. He is the least qualified and least accomplished head coach on that campus.

The basketball program is in capable hands with Mike Malone, and its other sports are top-flight, class operations across the board, men and women. Look it up - final fours and national championships achieved with grace, class and professionalism for decades.

This is a disgrace brought on by a Board of Trustees who meddled in an Athletic Department situation they should not have, showed zero class in the way everything was handled and put a coach in charge with absolutely no experience in the kind of environment he was walking into.

It was Mike Lombardi who said UNC would be the 33rd NFL Team. What an absolutely stupid and thoughtless thing to say. UNC never aspired to that nor had the tradition and history to be that obnoxious and arrogant. I hope he gets prosecuted for whatever is at the heart of this scandal. Now that the leaks are starting about drugs and wholly inappropriate sexual contact on a college campus by administrators is on the table, Lombardi, along with Steve Belichick, should be prosecuted for his misdeeds at a public university. The echoes of Penn State are in the air.

Biggest bunch of BS ever. It says sex between a recruitment staffer and players or staff. If you don’t know what this is code for you’re not very aware of how college sports operate. And UNC of all places, the most notorious school in the NCAA for cheating. Come on! This is all a UNC show. It’s not even the NCAA.

It's one thing to be a washed-up coach and no longer have the ability to run a program at an elite level. Happens to them all.

It's another thing to be loyal to a fault and enable/turn a blind eye to those in his inner circle who make him look like a fool professionally and take advantage of him.

Maybe BB's son is in rehab. The article says the lawyers are asking if BB Jr. did drugs on campus. Can you imagine if everyone on the UNC campus who had done drugs was investigated?

This is another very minor story that is greatly exaggerated. Whether it is an illness or drug rehab, I wish Steve Belichick all the best and a fast recovery.

Bill is one of the last of a dying breed. My uncles won a war; Bill won football games, both to much probably justified acclaim, but now it's over. Whether this is an instance of "progress" or a matter of sic transit gloria mundi is up for discussion.

BASED ON WHAT WE SAW HERE IN NEW ENGLAND:

This counts only as a mild surprise to me. The Belichick of 2000 was not the one who got fired in 2024. Some fans assume people don't change ever. But people do. Belichick of the early dynasty era had the humility and self-awareness to surround himself with players and coaches that presented a challenge. Maybe/likely because of his experience in Cleveland.

But overwhelming success started to erode those safeguards. He didn't need to rein himself in. And hey, it's not like his success was your standard 'great coach' success. Bill had done what no other coach in history had done.

LET ME REITERATE: I am in awe of what he accomplished. I would not trade his time here for anything. BUT I am aware of what became his flaws.

That historic success likely cemented in his mind that he didn't need to limit himself like he had in 2000. He didn't feel he needed to be challenged by players or coaches anymore. If they didn't fall in line after seeing those Lombardis... then how smart were they?

The most outward manifestation of this was the Matt Patricia as OC experiment. Even in the preseason, when games were at their most vanilla, it was clear MP was in over his head. Multiple analysts were in shock at just how bad his playcalling was. It broke Mac Jones. Maybe he didn't have that far to go to be broken, but the goal should have been building him up, not leaving him wondering what he was supposed to be doing.

WHAT UNC HAS SHOWN ME... he learned NOTHING from his dismissal in New England. If anything, he got worse. To me, it is fairly clear he views the college game with a certain degree of superiority. The crowd of yes-men has grown stronger. His obliviousness to their failings is apparent. His carelessness with the rules of the NCAA is flagrantly obvious.

All that's left of 2000's Belichick is that incredible football mind. And it's time for him to go.

I love the contrast between your portrayal of UNC as a place of class, prestige, honor and dignity, whereas the other posts portray it as a place of prostitution, drug taking, cash payoffs and many other forms of cheating.

Gotta say based on visiting a friend living in NC for 30 years, there sure is a lot of hypocrisy going on there. Lots of people portray themselves as high minded Christians but outside of some performative appearances in church they act like anything but. Not to say we don't have the same in the Northeast, and not saying all people in NC are insincere, but lots are.

I suppose, but is the juice worth the squeeze? If this was the plan they could just fire everyone from Bill on down for cause, install a new football staff, and let Bill et al fight back in court and hopefully reach an out-of-court settlement for less than the remaining money on their contracts. Just sniping Fat Mike and Sweaty Steve leaves Bill as a lame duck and really tanks recruiting for next season. There's a huge question mark over the entire program right now. It seems like there's no way forward with BB still in the building. If the goal is to get out of Bill's contract, this is about the messiest way to do it.

Your post made me think of how Bill's dad was an assistant coach at Navy for Bill's entire childhood and beyond, which means Bill grew up in Annapolis and was quite familiar with the hazing culture then in full force at the US Naval Academy. Bill graduated high school in Annapolis in 1970, long before anything like political correctness had become a thing. We saw Bill's IDGAF attitude on display for his 20+ years in New England.

I always also wondered if this kind of gave Bill a chip on his shoulder because, while his dad was successful there, he wasn't a USNA grad. There definitely is an old boy's club at USNA (and in the Navy as a whole) that his dad didn't qualify for.
