Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy Declares for the Draft

I agree with this 100%. The guy averaged fewer than 200 yards passing per game. One of Michigan's marquee moments from this past season was the game where they ran it, like, 30 times in a row.

I just don't see pro caliber starter here. Career backup.

Penix, Nix, and Daniels were all JAGS until this past season. All three were not just 5 year players, but 5 year starters. McCarthy is a 3 year player and two year starter. He just turned 21 last week.

I like him better than those other three. Just think about how he would look playing at Michigan in the 2025 season. He’s scrawny, but I wonder how he’ll look and play with another ten plus pounds of muscle and another year of experience.

I’m not advocating using our early second round pick on him, but if he falls much past that, I’d be interested.

Whuh whuh huh whuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh???? If the following are JAGS:

3,593 yards, 29 TD, 7 INT
4,641 yards, 31 TD, 8 INT
2,913 yards, 17 TD, 3 INT plus 885 yards rushing with 11 TDs

then WTF is this??

2,991 yards, 22 TD, 4 INT

McCarthy definitely has some tools that really are exciting. Great arm, excellent escapability in the pocket, does some designed runs (good runner), throws really well on the run.

My main concern with him is his accuracy. I’ve watched a lot of his games, and saw him miss key throws. It’s improved this year, he was at over 72%, and just proves he can get better, he’s not a finished product. He reminds me of Zach Wilson, though Wilson was better in college in that he carried BYU. Like Wilson, He can make all the throws, but can he escape the mistakes Wilson has made in the NFL. His Combine and Pro Day should be fascinating.

IF the Pats go MHJ in the 1st round, I’d be fine with McCarthy at 34, as long as they sign a veteran FA QB and have McCarthy watch for a year on the bench. Like what the Chiefs did with Mahomes and the Packers did with Love (3 seasons).

He's going top 20. Probably top 15.

If your best case scenario is that he is a #2 QB, then why the heck would you draft him so early? 6th round, maybe.

I don't think he is even remotely NFL caliber and I don't want him coming here, except maybe as a day 3 flyer.
Because he won't be there in the 6th round. And, as QB is the most important position on a football team, having a solid #2 QB is a smart investment.

You what else is a smart investment? Having a starting caliber LT... or WR.... or CB.... or S.... or DE.... or DT.... or LB.....

I don't disagree with those other positions. But having the QB is a must. Unless you can squeeze out just one SB with a Trent Dilfer/Brad Johnson. Then, it's back to mediocrity for quite sometime.

Having a QB is a must, but you were talking about the importance of the backup quarterback. I agree with you when you said "having a solid #2 QB is a smart" but the problem is this team has many other positions to fill before spending a high draft pick on the backup QB.

Where will JJ McCarthy be selected? I am on record saying top 15, declaring my pick early and often. What do you think?
Oh he's going top 12-15ish for sure. Again he's a lot closer to Daniels than some want to admit or realize. Most are just basing their opinions on what Twitter is telling them.

Agreed. But he is a bit young, including physically a bit light. I would love to draft him and have him sit out 1 year learning and building a NFL body. I think he might be special because he seems to do everything well, or at least reasonably. Maybe not great at everything, but he does not seem to have a glaring deficiency. Did I somehow miss his major weakness?

I'm about to go all in on McCarthy

Almost hit 21 mph here

Nice run by Corum. As a pure runner he could help the Patriots and fit into our RB by committee. I'd certainly consider him in the 4th round. Another reliable guy to hand it off to who can make some plays with his feet can only serve to take pressure off the next Patriots QB, whoever that turns out to be.

Definitely, maybe even 8 to Atlanta if they stay pat and roll the dice. There’s also Minnesota, Denver and the Raiders that are qb needy. Is he worthy of that high? Like all of them, we’ll find out,
