Michael Lombardi on obvious 8 teams that would be interested in Cassel

Actually, that person has to make the determination which players are better, Stafford/Sanchez + the #20 pick, or Cassel + the #1 pick, since Stafford & Sanchez will be gone by #20. Cassel + a franchise LT at #1 looks mighty attractive to me.

True, but with the rankings of the top OT prospects being so jumbled the drop from one of the Smith boys to Oher is probably not very significant.

I see the Bucs, Panthers or Vikings as the teams that Cassel should go to. If I'm the Pats, I would not trade him to Lions. I understand that this is a business, but for what Cassel did to save the Patriots' season, I wouldn't screw him over like that. I would try everything in my power to trade him to a team that is a QB away from being a strong contender. I like the non exclusive franchise tag so Cassel is free to sign with anybody. So if he chooses the Lion's, then so be it.

I agree that Cassel should want to go to a team that has a chance of being winner with him on it, but I don't think the Pats owe Cassel for doing his job. It was Belichick's, Brady's, and McDaniels' tuteledge that helped turn him into the QB he was last year. If he was on another team coming out of college, he might have been out of the league already rather than worrying what team is going to guarantee him tens of millions of dollars. I think Cassel owes the Pats his career, as much as, the Pats owe him for salvaging the season.

I really think him coming to the Patriots made him a millionaire. If he went to Tennessee, he might have been dumped when they dumped Norm Chow. He might not have even survived to make it through his rookie season anywhere else. It is a two way street on how Cassel and the Pats benefitted each other.

I agree, but I wouldn't count on ANY of the top 4 being available at #20.

Re: San Fran

nate clements contract is prohibitive. if we could afford the $$ aspect of Cassel we would keep him. Clements is not an option.

not necessarily......all guaranteed money stays behind in SF and all the pats would have to pay is the salary portion

If San Franciso ponied up the #10 overall pick... man that would be an attractive trade. Not to mention it allows Cassel to go back to his hometown team. Winwin for the Pats and 9ers. I'm not sure what QB SF has though... Alex Smith. Isn't he officially a bust yet?

For the love of God, how many times do I have to say this?

Cassel is from LA, not San Francisco. He's as likely to have been a Rams fan or a Raiders fan as a Niners fan.

Apparently this analyst doesn't understand that a 2010 first and a 2009 second are approximately equal, especially if you plan to win more games next year than this. Consider Minny (at 22) who the analyst indicates wouldn't have quite enough to offer with a 2009 1st and a 2009 second. Well, they could simply negotiate with Cassel and give us a 2009 1st and a 2010 first. The patriots are not part of the negotiations. The same analysis is true for TB (at 19), Chicago (at 18), Tenn (at 30) and the jets (at 17).

So, before we talk about trades, the question is whether any of these teams is willing to use two seconds and can come up with a deal for Cassel. One alternative is for these teams is to use the same two picks to trade up to #10 to TRY to get a QB (or compete in a bidding war on draft day). The other alternative is for them to compete for the free agents available. Since there are these five teams plus the SIX others mentioned as all looking for a QB (KC, Detroit, SF, Wash, Carolina, SF), it would seem that one of these teams will be willing to use this year's and next year's first for Cassel.

BTW, this offer of two firsts is approximately equal to SF's #10 this year.

Nice work by Lombardi here.

The only possibility I don't agree w/at all in the Jets but they do need a QB, he says:

The Titans would probably be interested if they could find a sucker to take Vince Young. Absent that, they are stuck spinning their wheels.

Ofcourse, with Mr Reese on the squad, maybe he can work some magic after all, he drafted VY.

It seems to me there's an error in his assessment of the Lions' decision process:

"They can part with their second first-round pick, 20th overall, and feel like they’ve gotten two blue chip players in the first round. It will cost more than the 20th pick overall, but for the Lions, they must think quality over quantity, and getting two quality players is much better than four good players, especially if one of the quality players is a quarterback. There is a deal here — but first things first. Someone in the Lions’ building must make the determination which player is better, Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez or Cassel."

I like the way you put that. If Detroit is smart they make a move for Cassel. If they go with Stafford or Sanchez with the 1st pick they are reaching but if they instead take a franchise LT, which at this time looks like Virginia’s Monroe, and then trade pick #20, along w/other considerations, for Cassel they are not only making the right football decision but the smarter financial decision as well.

Why pay for a QB at #1, who is a 50/50 proposition at best if history is an indicator when you can take Monroe, or the highest OT on your board, and pay him a smaller overall deal and also get yourself a QB who has played well in the league, who is more mature than any other option available in the draft and has shown he can handle adversity and also know exactly what you would be paying for? It’s a no-brainer.

"I like getting Julius Peppers plus a draft pick (either 2nd or 3rd rounder.) The two teams would have to agree on compensation for both players ahead of time. If Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 system, then we should target him."

I was listening to the radio at lunch today and they were talking about this very thing. Didn't catch who was speaking but he liked the idea for Carolina.
The Panthers may need to Franchise Jorgan Gross -OL so Peppers may be the odd man out. He already came out here and said he wanted out of Charlotte.
He's the "MAN" here and just wants to be a football player and not the Star.
With the Pats he would get this.
He does have great talent but takes a lot of plays off.
