There are several ways to gage how successful a team is.

One is are they in the playoffs?

Another is the record.

But I think if you want to discuss the long term strength the organization has had or the long term failures the measure is what the fan MB are discussing the week after black Monday.

For the successful teams the questions are which of the effect of will our OC, DC, VP etc stay or be stolen by another team.

For the unsuccessful ones the questions are which OC, DC, VP is out there that we can steal to replace the bum that got fired or should have gotten fired.

Re: Measureing how successful a teams is....

I'm guessing we're the most satisfied non-play-off team fan-base in the NFL.

It sucks, but 11-5 is ALWAYS good enough (no player in the NFL now was playing the last time 11-5 missed the playoffs) and it's tough not to be satisfied. Few sports-writers out there have agonized over every moment more than this fanbase, at least the portion represented here, and it would be tough to be proud of any other team that missed the playoffs, I would think.

Add to that what Hoodie said - that our biggest thoughts this season are how we will improve (from 11-5) and which of our position coaches might get stolen for a failing team (stolen from a non-playoff team at that) - and it's still good to be a Patriots fan.

I'm basking in the afterglow of watching all three Pats "America's Game - The Superbowl Champions" episodes, and after reviewing 18-1 and 11-5 in the MASH unit/Nursing Home, I feel like we've yet to see the amazing things that still lay ahead. More superb players will be unearthed, more records will be smashed, and most importantly, more SB rings will be won.

Happy New Year, guys. I'ma go walk my dog.

My view is that it is more of a longitudinal thing.. if the Dolphins come back to earth next year and go 8 and 8 will they be considered successful? I do not think success is measured by one years record, the body of work has to be considered how long have they been on top and how are the built for the future?

The Pats are extremely successful in this century, and will this success will go down as a barometer that other teams will use as a measuring stick in the future.. like SF or Dallas is used in the past.

Success = Winning

The NFL is about winning. Over the past decade the best teams have been (in order):
Patriots 102 wins, 3 SBs
Colts 101 wins, 1 SB
Pittsburgh 94 wins, 1 SB
