Mayo's saccharine SJW approach includes 'bro hugs' for the media

It’s true none of us know how they’ll do but it’s a pretty safe assumption to think they will improve from last seasons nightmare.

The positive culture and vibe emphasis is tough to swallow for older folks in particular. But pause and think for a moment to realize that the players seem to embrace Mayo and want to play for him.

I was surprised to see how pretty much all of our free agents who we’d have wanted to return did just that and never really considered going elsewhere. They wanted to say here: a 4-13 football team. There is an optimism surrounding the new staff among the locker room even if the fans don’t have it. Buy in is important, let’s see if it translates to wins.
If you've played team sports there's an instinctive feel of team/connectivity when you play/practice over time. It grows through execution and hardship over time (as long there aren't too many ******* divas, etc.). It's natural. The trust. It's harder at the professional level (I imagine) to maintain over months and months (with all of life's distractions) that's when phrases and corny platitudes can be a reminder of the meaning. They can be real **** or just farts in the wind.

"Do your job" was to the point. Execute m'fer. "Process. Progress. Payoff" sounds like something from Kraft's Marketing Team. Uh, what's the logic of that block, let's check the data. There's nothing to bind you or remind you of the ****ing physical and mental toll that you need to play this game week after week. I can just hear Judon screaming after a missed tackle by one of his teammates, " Dude. Process. Progress. Payoff!" Just rolls off your tongue like a warm buttered croissant dipped in a nice cup of kopi luwak coffee. Cool, hard-nosed ****ing tackle culture. Riiiiiiiight.

There's also a phallic symbol in that middle pink bowl ... w'sup with that?
No doubt Thunder commissioned the artist to include a junior phallic symbol within the mural that is representative of the much larger phallic inland lighthouse with tiny bell referred to by the owner as "Big Bob"

Until we see how players respond to Mayo, I ain't judging his coaching style.

Players tend to respond to former player head coaches and have closer relationships to them because the players can identify with a former player more than a coach who never played or didn't get past college. Doesn't mean they will be head coaches, but they can be more casual with the players without losing control in a lot of cases.

Besides, the biggest knock on Belichick disciples has been they try to be too much like Belichick and players do not respond to them and sometimes even revolt.
Whole heartedly agree. You hit the nail on the head. Mayo's very unique in that he played and coached under Bill. He has the experience from both sides. I'll keep saying this... this team in 2024 is on a mission.

As I have written about this several times, I will only say explicitly here what I have implied in a more genteel manner elsewhere: I am convinced Mayo is not ready for the job and that all these silly Oprahesque idees recues which clutter Jerrod's head, cloud his judgment, and flow so volubly ad nauseum when he speaks, ensure his rather quick failure as HC. The only question will be how long it will take for fans and ownership to take note of the failure, given he is such a "nice guy," as if that matters.

I have been in business 40 years .... I give way more bro hugs to my customers and their customers who know me than back in the 90's and it's not even close ... it's a sign of respect.
LOL. I don't know what your business is, but unless it is a massage parlor, I would thank you to keep your mitts off me.

BB was excoriated in Cleveland when he cut Bernie Kosar. 30 something years later, they still bring it up.
Yup. Hard to cut a fan favorite. Got guys here who do the same thing, day in day out. But that wasn't really the point.

I think the answer nowadays lies somewhere in between.

I know we can't compare professional athletes to the rest of the labor force, but at the lowest common denominator we are all human.

In my experience whenever the work ship was sinking it was usually due to a lack of accountability, or the whip being cracked way too hard. Pendulum swinging from "Just do your job" (which doesn't resonate well with most people these days) to "Everything is awesome" in leadership works great until things get tough (as they always do in most jobs).

At this point leadership expects because they've been so positive that everyone will feel the same and buckle down. The issue is that many super-positive leader types don't want to hold people accountable as they want everyone to love them. This leads to the best workers getting pissed because they are again doing ALL the work while others continue to coast.

Will this happen in NE? Time will tell, and as many have already voiced here we'll have to wait until they start playing. But I think the truth lies somewhere in between for the best leadership style. Set clear goals. Work people hard, build an environment of accountability across the board first, and reward the behaviors handsomely. Be fair and consistent. Be flexible and as objective as possible. Cut bait when needed. I'm hoping this is what we're getting in Mayo, but right now it just seems like he's trying way too hard to be the most loved person in the room.

as long as he does't start acting like the twit in miami, i'll give him the benefit

Mayo's comment that Belichick would've passed on Drake Maye is oddly NOT a ringing endorsement of Drake Maye. Mayo is either saying that Belichick wouldn't know the value of a good QB if his life depended on it or else that there are enough questions about Maye that Belichick would be dissuaded from drafting him.

Either way, it's not a good look for Mayo. Maybe he misspoke. But if he did, he seems to be constantly misspeaking and walking it back.

Huh? Where did he say Bill would pass on Maye?

Imagine a boat where the captain was just tossed overboard in a mutiny. The new captain says he's going to fix things by burning the sails to gain firepower. The boat owner scolds him and instructs that he's not to say such things. After a quick hug and whispered nicknames, they adjust the matching pins on each other's chests and all is right with the world.

The boat is sinking, some of the sailors point out. The new captain orders that they paint an image of himself over each hole, all the while talking about what the old captain would have done in his place.

Looks like one of the sails did catch fire, a sailor yells.

There's an iceberg up ahead, another sailor calls out. The new captain muses out loud about the old captain. Nobody is asking about the old captain, a sailor says. The new captain proceeds to call a cuddle huddle, a new teambuilding strategy that he proceeds to explain is quite different from the old captain's ways.

Something isn't quite right on this boat, murmur a few sailors, but their unease is quickly answered by dismissive remarks. We have to give the captain a chance, they others say. We still haven't seem him sail a real storm. There's no reason to worry. As long as he gets us to the next port, that's all we should care about. You naysayers are outdated and crazy...

Just a mile away, from the largest boat in all the seas, Captain Goodell and First Mate Vincent lower their binoculars, turn to each other, and smile.

You need to log off for a while and take a deep breath.

Learning experiences. Not worried at this point.

(A) It's easy to embrace a boss you believe likes you personally and won't be hard on you. Which doesn't mean you'll reach your potential on his watch, probably more to the contrary.

(B) The free-agent "buy in" was bought with solid, market-competitive contracts.

"Positive culture and vibe emphasis" certainly is not tough for "older folks" to swallow if football oriented. The overboard SJW/DEI slant is another thing altogether.

Just the mere fact that Mac is no longer starting games for us will improve our season.

I was not thinking ability but I also was not thinking women. Thx for your response. Seems like men and women need to start getting better at jobs they don't typically want.
I doubt you'll convince many women to become future bricklayers and roofers, or more men to go into nursing. In fact, you'll have to force them, because in countries that promote and enforce gender equality the most, we don't see more gender equality across professions, we see less. Paradoxically, the strictest countries have the highest disparity. This is a well-studied topic and you don't have to take my word for it. I don't want to live in a society which forces men and women into roles they don't want. That sounds like the Soviet Union or Orwell's 1984.

People think they are free to construct their own reality and force people to accept it, and some will dislike this post without comment for that very reason. They dislike, but are unable or unwilling to engage in discussion. They want to dictate.

Anyway, I'm going to drop this topic right here for good, because this site is about football and even tangentially political topics are toxic on a site like this (but I felt compelled to make myself clear).

Yeah I get that perception... But the truth is we have no idea... Mini camp might give us a clue about Mayos coaching style, maybe not... What we have seen so far is just one small aspect of what he will be as a coach...
Personally.. I feel he has bills coaching principles ingrained in him as a Former player and coach. As a fan I enjoy watching the Interviews, the players amd coaches expressing themselves being more open and feeling like they can be more of themselves. Listening to pep & Uche you can tell these respect the heck out of bill but are embracing mayo, and will play hard for him. To your excellent point Mayo's not a carbon copy of bill like the others before him. Hopefully it translates to wins!
