Mayo's saccharine SJW approach includes 'bro hugs' for the media

I'll go out on a limb here and state that most of us would agree that winning cures a multitude of sins. Although I don't expect the team to be a true contender for another 3 to 4 years (and that's if everything goes right), I do expect to at least see progress, even if not reflected in the record for the first 2 years (such as solid tackling, minimal penalties because of sound discipline and mental toughness , good X's and O's, sound drafting and general talent acquisition, etc.). But, until any of that happens, I'm not digging the "Vibe" I'm seeing coming out of One Patriot Place. If this turns into a D.E.I. show, I'm out (and I've been a die hard fan since the 1970's).

He is a players coach and feels there is importance in emphasizing diversity within his culture while stating that black/white all players are valued equally.

This is a nothing burger you are choosing to be outraged by. If he wins, who gives a ****.
If diversity matters, why aren't there two kids in the mural, one black and one white?

I’m okay with the light hearted positive vibe going on. Better than the overworked, utterly depressed vibe of the past few seasons.

Funny people talking about Mayo is going to be a disaster like we didn’t just have one of the most embarrassing seasons in decades under Bill. Can’t be worse than what we’ve seen recently.

Idk, I don’t really care. Would you be complaining if it was one white kid? Probably not.
No, I would not be complaining nor am I "complaining" now. It is my observation regarding your use of "diversity."

I wish Joker was still around. He'd be having a field day with this topic, setting everyone straight and putting people in their place.

For what it's worth... Mayo's approach is working as desired with the media. I've never seen more positive or hyperbolic headlines come out of Boston Sports outlets. I just saw a headline from NESN.com that read "Rookie Javon Baker is putting the NFL on Notice."... He was drafted a week ago and hasn't had a single nfl practice...

Baker is going to be our best rookie.

This would be funnier if it had more diversity.

You're kidding. I see a black, a Hispanic, a kid of obviously Northern European descent, a Greek-American and a future homosexual (the other kid).

I agree that Bill had to go, and that his drafting and general personnel moves were dismal at best (especially the last several years). But the Vibe that Bill produced when the team was performing at the level that we've come to know since 2001 was the polar opposite of utterly depressed. But, that was then, and this is now. We'll see.

There's also a phallic symbol in that middle pink bowl ... w'sup with that?

There are many more female engineers now then back when I was just out of school. Super smart. Well trained. Very competent. I think you might be out of touch with the status of the current labor force.
According to the National Science Foundation, women accounted for 24 percent of undergraduate engineering degrees in 2020.

"Warmth before confidence"? I dunno. Is this a re-parenting daycare center or professional football? I kind of understand this culture change to accommodate (coddle) younger players, but at the same time wonder if he's going too far. I guess we'll see whether going warm and fuzzy = a kick-ass football team.

From the article:
One day, Mayo decided the back wall needed art -- something unique and personal. Glaser, the highest-ranking woman ever in the Patriots organization, tapped into a relationship she had with Rob "ProBlak" Gibbs, a Black Boston native who is a visual artist and organizer, commissioning him to do the wall mural. The result is a grand, colorful piece that prominently features a young Black kid in a football uniform, looking at Mayo and other Patriots legends in uniform, envisioning he could be like them one day.

"Diversity matters on our staff, Black and white, young and old, former players and non-players. Players' mental health matters. Relationships with players matter," said Mayo, the first Black head coach in Patriots history. "People matter. What you stand for matters. You have to work at it and build it."
I'm struggling with this user -friendly kid gloves type of coaching but I'm old so...

As long as they win they can draw game plans with crayons for all I care.

What if he ends up sucking real bad. Suddenly they have to answer the question of: what the hell do we do with this

I don't think he'll suck. But the thought of it is kinda funny lmao. I guess it's better than tattooing the name of someone you've dated for a couple months on your arm.

It’s true none of us know how they’ll do but it’s a pretty safe assumption to think they will improve from last seasons nightmare.

The positive culture and vibe emphasis is tough to swallow for older folks in particular. But pause and think for a moment to realize that the players seem to embrace Mayo and want to play for him.

I was surprised to see how pretty much all of our free agents who we’d have wanted to return did just that and never really considered going elsewhere. They wanted to say here: a 4-13 football team. There is an optimism surrounding the new staff among the locker room even if the fans don’t have it. Buy in is important, let’s see if it translates to wins.

To be honest, after 20 years of BB's approach a different method is a welcome change. Bill was at one end of the spectrum and I just hope that Mayo is not too far at the other end of the spectrum. Something in the middle would be great.
I have concerns about too much buddy buddy stuff as it all make blurry borders between player and coach. Also when things go bad, the buddy buddy approach can cause players to rapidly lose respect for their coach.

We will not know how this approach is being received until the team hits a low point and losses start to pile up.
Certainly if players get too comfortable it may get harder to bring out the best and the drive to excel may be blunted.

Its hard getting used to the "players coach" approach and I do worry that players may lose respect for Mayo after 5-6 losses in a row.

I'll be honest. The new slogans don't inspire much confidence. They sound like they were stolen from the back of a Cheerios box or something.. Not impressed.

Do Your Job. - Straight forward and succinct.

"Process. Progress. Payoff? WTF is that ?? *SMH* It sounds like a REHAB Mantra. Not a Point of focus for a Football team.

I don't remember the Pats having a "Slogan" for the team until they won something.

Unless he gets betrayed like BB was - first by Manjudas and then by the media (****face Tomase and his irresponsible reporting) I doubt it... It really took spygate, an epic level of betrayal, for Bill to start to reel everything in... First the curt pressers (watch some of the earlier ones, he wasn't always a curmudgeon) followed by a shrinking circle of coaches he felt he could trust (FoBs)... There's a reason why he put so much faith in guys we were all shaking our heads at ... He felt that he could trust them...

BB was excoriated in Cleveland when he cut Bernie Kosar. 30 something years later, they still bring it up.
