Mayo's saccharine SJW approach includes 'bro hugs' for the media

It depends what you mean by "work." You can certainly mandate that 50% of your engineering staff be women. But bad things are probably going to happen, because far fewer women go into engineering disciplines than men. Instead of getting the best 5% of the available pool, now you are forced to take a higher % of female candidates, regardless of their level of competence. It works the other way too: the HR field is dominated by women, but if you mandate equality, then you are scraping the bottom of the barrel to fill those positions with men. Similar issues with hiring by race, etc. Once competence stops being the main criteria for hiring, planes start falling out of the sky, eventually.
Competence is not the main criteria in many fields. Sometimes it's who you know rather than what you know as you already know, you know.

There are many more female engineers now then back when I was just out of school. Super smart. Well trained. Very competent. I think you might be out of touch with the status of the current labor force.

Its way too soon and weird for Mayo to be commissioning a mural of himself before the team has even taken a snap. I wish Mayo would just get to grinding instead of talking about how things are different without BB. This is definitely a different approach, I hope it works. But pressure is on now for the players and coaching staff to turn this team around and get us back to competing.

The HC was drafted by the GOAT, the HC played LB at an all pro level under the GOAT, the HC coached a dam good defense under the GOAT... the HC has championship pedigree as a player and a coach a wealth of knowledge from the GOAT.
Don't forget.....the HC has "executive experience" as a celebrity intern at a healthcare company....for an ENTIRE year

To interrupt this Felgerish psychobabbling handwringing for a moment...

The draft:
Drake Maye was in a miserable situation last year, never complained, played too hard, trying to do too much. Never blamed anyone but himself.

Polk is a fighter, a dawg. He wins with aggression to the ball.

Wallace is ****y - "I can play left tackle, no problem."

Robinson has a mean streak. He's a road grader.

Baker...well, look at his tweets. He's a dawg, a ****y dawg, who plays physical and tough.

Dial is a ball hawk - for whatever CB weakness he has. He'll jump a route.

Milton is a physical specimen. His game is power (too much, often).

Bell is a truck, as evidence by his run-over-style of YAC.

They didn't pick any finesse here.

One thing I admired about Bill's approach was emphasis on team and not on individuals. Do your job as a vital cog in the machine. He was reluctant to praise or blame individuals in public after a win or loss and included the coaches as all part of the team. Privately the players noticed he would treat them all fairly. They were shocked to see Bill would humiliate Brady in film sessions and on the practice field more than other players but maybe he thought it was necessary to keep Brady's ego in check by being harder on him. Bill didn't allow players to cause controversy. He didn't allow diva's or freelancing. Where Bill could have improved his approach is in performance reviews, he should first praise the positive things that a player does before criticizing the bad habits and mistakes. Even on the practice field compliment the good plays as well as pounce on the bad ones. The negativity was evident in his draft analysis recently. He started off with film of mostly bad plays by the players then showed the good plays. When Jesus counsels the churches in the Bible's book of Revelation, he first compliments them on their good points, then tells them what they are doing wrong and need to change. It is a better approach with people. Hopefully Mayo is trying to adjust to this positive first approach but keeps the other good things he learned from Bill. Who can forget the 2001 Super Bowl Pats running out onto the field as a team rather then a handful of the diva's.

That's on top of his SIX YEARS as a coach under Bill. I get it Maybe if he switched to be Maye's OC it would give him more experience. Boy that would be a great move!!!!

I was just thinking about a couple of old Patriot coaches from years past. The first one is **** "I want to hug everyone I come in contact with Macpherson and the second one is Rod Rust whose sour personality made Bill Belichick's personality seem like that of Mary Poppins singing "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". Both **** and Rod failed miserably.

I truly appreciated BB's style of coaching and the winning atmosphere for as long as it lasted. However, I also believe it was time for a change. And similar to what others have stated, I welcome this change and look forward to the upcoming season. Time will tell how it all works out . . .

It all comes down to talent. While Ty Law just said on Edelman's show that most players didn't like Carroll's "rah rah" approach, the injuries, bad drafts and key player defections was their downfall. A healthy 1997 squad locks up the #2 seed and hosts Denver for the AFCCG. As the injuries mounted and key players walked, things got worse. In addition going 2-4 against Parcells' Jets was not a good look for Bob and was the nail in the coffin for Carroll. Carroll's approach proved to not be the issue and he was a very successful HC at USC and in the NFL.

Moral of the story is that Mayo needs talent and put them in positions to succeed. If he can't get the talent, he'll be gone very quickly.

I assumed it was satire/troll job but when it comes to these topics who knows.
Agreed. As a poster I stay away from those types of post. I come here to avoid things like that and just talk patriots football.

Great post! IMO it's going to have to be much worse than the last few seasons In order for mayo to be shown the door.

Until we see how players respond to Mayo, I ain't judging his coaching style.

Players tend to respond to former player head coaches and have closer relationships to them because the players can identify with a former player more than a coach who never played or didn't get past college. Doesn't mean they will be great head coaches, but they can be more casual with the players without losing control in a lot of cases.

Besides, the biggest knock on Belichick disciples has been they try to be too much like Belichick and players do not respond to them and sometimes even revolt.

I agree with @Salsalife ... Let Mayo be Mayo and do his thing... Not just one way to get things done... I'm giving him wide latitude in his first year... Better his own approach vs a mini BB clone... we've seen how well they have panned out in the past on other teams... it might take him a while to find what works, what doesn't for him... And that's okay...
This. Every single Bill disciple failed because they tried to replicate Bill and it didn't work because nobody can pull it off but him. If Mayo thinks this is his way to get the team inspired and motivated, then it's his program to try it. If he fails, it will catch up to him, if it works, nobody will give a ****.

He'll stop giving bro hugs after he gets stabbed in the back by the media, blamed for everything under the sun, then hung out to dry.

Then he'll understand why BB minimized his time with the media and gave them non-answers all day. Schmoozing with the media doesn't help you win football games, and BB figured that out in Cleveland, long ago.

The less time with them, the better.

Sounds to me like the pendulum may have swung to far in the opposite direction from BBs approach. We shall see. The problem is that once your lenient its hard to go back.
Yeah I get that perception... But the truth is we have no idea... Mini camp might give us a clue about Mayos coaching style, maybe not... What we have seen so far is just one small aspect of what he will be as a coach...

Unless he gets betrayed like BB was - first by Manjudas and then by the media (****face Tomase and his irresponsible reporting) I doubt it... It really took spygate, an epic level of betrayal, for Bill to start to reel everything in... First the curt pressers (watch some of the earlier ones, he wasn't always a curmudgeon) followed by a shrinking circle of coaches he felt he could trust (FoBs)... There's a reason why he put so much faith in guys we were all shaking our heads at ... He felt that he could trust them...

Pete Carroll liked hugging guys. His act work for a season and a half in Foxboro.
