Mayo's saccharine SJW approach includes 'bro hugs' for the media

He is a players coach and feels there is importance in emphasizing diversity within his culture while stating that black/white all players are valued equally.

This is a nothing burger you are choosing to be outraged by. If he wins, who gives a ****.
I don't see outrage, I see questions. Put on your big boy pants and chill.

I am CONFIDENT that Mayo is going to be a great leader of men. I've met the man (a few years ago, before he was a coach) and I confess that Mayo has THAT kind of charisma. That is an important factor in today's NFL. But you also have to be more than JUST a charismatic learder. You also have to be EXTREMELY organized, knowledgeable, and a great leader of your staff as well. We won't know about those things until we can see them for ourselves. Do they have good game plans, are they well organized on the sidelines? Do they communicate well, etc?

On thing I can tell you as a long time assistant and coordinator who became a HS HC. He will make blunders. It's inevitable. There is so much "stuff" the head guy has to deal with, even at the HS level, my first year as a HC was full of the unexpected. The next year was a LOT easier because I knew the scope of the job that much better. Now that's on the HS level. Multiply that by about a million to where Mayo is essentially the point man of a multi-Billion dollar operation, with the fan base and rabid media ALWAYs looking over your shoulder and more than willing to 2nd guess EVERY decision you make.

It will not happen without some bumps in the road. So when they happen the only thing I will be bothered about is IF those mistakes are repeated.

"Outraged"? No. Skeptical, yes.

I do agree with those suggesting Mayo be given a chance to sink or swim with his kinder-gentler approach. It's just that we've seen this sort of pendulum swing before in Foxboro and elsewhere. What it takes to win in the NFL hasn't changed -- uncommon effort/personal sacrifice and single-minded obsession with winning NOW with what you've got, even while building toward the future. I have yet to see Mayo speak with a sense of urgency about winning.

One wildcard for a player's coach is the locker room: are there leaders among the players who can hold less disciplined, less mature players accountable? Another is the other coaches and what approach they will bring. If team leaders and the coaches bring some discipline, Mayo might have success even if he isn't hard on the players. And, we really don't know what brand of leadership Mayo will ultimately bring. It may turn out to be balanced despite appearances now.

I don't like the saccharine approach toward the media: I feel it signals weakness. But as others have said on this thread, winning is what counts. If they play tough football and win games, everyone will laud Mayo's tenure.

"Warmth before confidence"? I dunno. Is this a re-parenting daycare center or professional football? I kind of understand this culture change to accommodate (coddle) younger players, but at the same time wonder if he's going too far. I guess we'll see whether going warm and fuzzy = a kick-ass football team.

From the article:
One day, Mayo decided the back wall needed art -- something unique and personal. Glaser, the highest-ranking woman ever in the Patriots organization, tapped into a relationship she had with Rob "ProBlak" Gibbs, a Black Boston native who is a visual artist and organizer, commissioning him to do the wall mural. The result is a grand, colorful piece that prominently features a young Black kid in a football uniform, looking at Mayo and other Patriots legends in uniform, envisioning he could be like them one day.

"Diversity matters on our staff, Black and white, young and old, former players and non-players. Players' mental health matters. Relationships with players matter," said Mayo, the first Black head coach in Patriots history. "People matter. What you stand for matters. You have to work at it and build it."
Sounds to me like the pendulum may have swung to far in the opposite direction from BBs approach. We shall see. The problem is that once your lenient its hard to go back.

We'll see what happens once they start playing, right now he's just building a roster.

Based on reading advertisements for lots of colleges not too long ago college marketing departments find it absolutely critical to advertise their efforts on diversity and social justice. Since players are a similar age it makes sense to me. That's apparently how you connect with this age demographic.

Cameron Wolfe was on a podcast I saw on YouTube. He works in Miami so knows how the Dolphins situation works. He said Mayo will be tougher and more demanding than Mike McDaniels who never raises his voice is in Miami. It’s just more we’re interested in you for more than just football. There’s nothing wrong with that.

I believe we need to pump the brakes on the critique of the supposed daycare and all the all BS talk of late on Mayo's style. speaking for myself.. let's allow the team to take a snap first, and be put in adverse situations before we know for sure if that style permeates to success. Just like we've seen excellence at the QB position for 19 seasons, and excellence at HC for 24 seasons we have high expectations as fans. I'm not here saying anyone is wrong to have an opinion. I just feel like the judgment of Mayo's a but premature. Maybe it's because he's being himself to the media, and not acting like a complete sentence to a question is giving away the nuclear war codes. We the fan in Massachusetts are hard working folks, who just want to have a team watchable on offense, keeping our schedules clear for Sundays like we used too, and hopefully have a team in the post season in January.
One of the things they talked about was Mayo's ability to reach younger guys. Bill could not care less about younger guys until they proved to him they could play as professionals. I would think Mayo is going to build his team by including these guys from Day one as opposed to ****ting on them.

Love the new approach got sick and tired of the old one.

I think the number one thing that needs to change - and as much as I love Bill - is the days of alienating guys if they struggle or make an error can't continue. In this day and age, that doesn't work, and this generation does require both discipline and encouragement. You can't just cast a kid aside anymore and hope that motivates him. These days, they go the other way and we've seen it enough in recent years when guys end up in the "doghouse" to know that needs to change. However, if they end up repeating the mistakes, then that's on them, and it's a different story.

Could it be fake DEI vibes he picked up from his executive experience or whatever? Maybe. We don't know.

I'll take the time to see the results. The results will paint in the outlined framework we see being put up right now. If the players are happier than ever, then it's genuine and worthwhile.

Dissing on Mayo's initiatives ain't a dish of crow I'm willing to risk right now, we simply have no clue or indication to how he actually runs the team.

Idk, man. I think even Bill was sick and tired of the Lombardi hard ass approach.
Or he might have been sick of the players being sick of the Lombardi hard ass approach. I'll wait for his book to find out which was which.

Mike McDaniels approach is already starting to wear out. We'll see how they bounce back from last season but the shine is off a little.

I don't know if it's that or just the fact that he's tried to build up Tua and Tua didn't deliver. I think he's a player who the fan base is already starting to turn on, and if Miami finds itself behind both Buffalo and the Jets this year - and if we split or possibly [gasp] sweep them - it'll get ugly real quick there.
