It looked like miscommunication when Edelman & Vereen did that switch. One of the OLB/Safety should have been on Gronk instead of them both going for Edelman.

But they didn't really have much time to react and change things, which is something else Mayock points out in the video with a different play. Those changes of pace really do keep defenses off balance.

Yes that I understand I was mostly wondering if anyone could explain which of the two players screwed up when Edelman and Vereen did the switch.

Probably the OLB because you'd imagine they would have wanted the taller player on Gronk and the shiftier player on Vereen in the original formation the Patriots showed. It's hard to say without knowing what the Lions DC had called originally though.
