I'm not as forgiving as most on this thread about mayo. I was 100% on board when he got hired cause we've seen plenty of players become good coaches. I always liked his show with Tom Curran and thought he was well spoken.

None of that translated on the field. I was tired of bills ****iness in the later years and I thought mayo did the same thing without anything backing it up.

Hes a figurehead for these businesses. I guess some ppl will be lured because of his name or cache but personally I would run in the other direction if I was investing. He didn't care about the head coaching job here. Don't know if he was overwhelmed or had no heart but I ain't doing business with him

I made that joke earlier in the thread, but in all seriousness, I wish Mayo the best. I like Mayo; he was just way over his head coaching-wise. Wish him success in all his endeavors.

One of these days people will take this part of his life seriously when they stop writing about him being in "Business". At Optum he was in Healthcare, at Fifth Down Capital he's in financial services, or PE, take your pick. So whatever field he's in, he's likely there for Sales or Business Dev which was his title at Optum. In PE he might be either attracting companies looking for funding or in the fund raising for the fund itself. Either way, he can leverage the high profile that he has as from being in the NFL as this is his huge advantage. I hope it creates value for him and his firm and one day they may finally stop saying he's in "business" and when that happens, I'll know that he'll finally be getting the credit for this part of his life.

Yeah, came here to say he's not underqualified for this at all. He's there to attract clients and money through relationships. Its like most jobs: the technical stuff is the easy part, the relationships and emotional intelligence are the defining success factors, and harder to acquire.

He won't be the one making the decisions on how to invest the money. He's there to get you to the meeting where you can have a meaningful conversation with the people who will be doing that.

I agree. he is a handshaker. part of a golf foursome. a ****tail guest.
one thing for sure when trying to attract clients...he doesnt know many good coaches

while I agree, my question is why
he was here under Bill, and seemingly was given more and more responsibility year over year. we read/heard he was co-DC with game plan control. the defensive players loved him.
he interviewed for HC jobs, and again, we heard he interviewed well (Philly) and was an up and comer. he turned down a HC interview with the Panthers.
in 2021, with Mayo apparently playing a major role, the Pats defense was ranked #4 in total defense. #2 in points allowed.

One of the strangest owner decisions of all time.

He was known as a film junkie as a player. First one in the building.

I assumed that BB marginalized him as a LB coach, but he proved he wasn't qualified for anything beyond that.

I find it interesting that his hubris was enough to earn Kraft's trust and that he himself thought he was ready to be an HC with no organizational vision, no Xs and Os philosophy or accumen and no network of assistants. It's shocking that Kraft, having been a long time owner, was that naive.

Van Pelt's offense was terrible. Receivers running into each other, no audibles out of plays that were doomed to fail.

This is a phony-baloney job just as his Optum job was. His only duty will be to be available to hang out with clients and BS about football over drinks. It's the kind of no work, high profile position that he tried to run his HC tenure as. More power to him if that's what his bosses want to pay for.

If you're going to hire a minority HC with no NFL coaching background to speak of then go 100% in cap spending and compiling resources so he is successful. Mayo got none of that. After BK failed to reach the HOF, Mayo was collateral damage.

If BK was inducted into the HOF then Mayo would still be the Pats HC for at least 3 years.
