And if so, forgive my ignorance. Do teams scout their divisional opponents (or any team they may have on schedule who concerns them) by observing the training camp sessions? It would seem that any trends observed during situation drills might be good to know if you face a team a few times and maybe in the playoffs...just wondering.

I don't think it's a dumb question. I would think that there might be rules in place to prevent this..if not then why not send a scout with a pencil and a notepad to make observations. Again, I would think there are some rules to prevent this so a team can train in peace and not have to worry about divisional opponents scouting them.

I'm guessing it's done, not to pick up on secret plays (which I'm sure they only practice during closed sessions), but to keep tabs on players. There's a position in the front office responsible just for pro personnel (players already in the league), and it's his job to have the latest info on those players in case they become available.

FWIW, there's no such thing as a dumb question. I would be surprised if teams DIDN'T have a look at others' training camps.

p.s.s. There are a number of sessions that are "closed" to the media. And I bet that the Patriot's "practice bubble" has more to do with this, than the weather.

I may be just tossing my own ignorance onto the bonfire, but doesn't it depend on whether you charge admission? I thought that teams weren't technically allowed to send scouts to rivals' camps unless admission was charged, in which case no holds are barred. Did I imagine this?

Technically, I don't think the teams are allowed to scout the Training Camp sessions, unless the team charges admission to Training Camp - I seem to remember something about this back a few years ago when the Redskins started charging admission to camp, and thus allowing scouts to come attend.
