Brady, Seymour, and Gronk are Bill's best draft picks

5-14 is Gronk's bday? That just doesn't seem right, it should be June 9th or at least May 5th

Strange coincidence. I'm wearing a Gronk 87 T shirt today. Had no idea it was his birthday. Now I can go around pretending I knew it all along, and telling people it's to celebrate his birthday.

One of my favorites was back when Gronk was a rookie.

And it's not as if James Laurinaitis was a slouch; three times he had over 100 solo tackles, and averged 122 tackles per year for the Rams.

Woohoo! Let's get this party started. 5-14 henceforth to be known as Yo Soy Fiesta Day baby, I'm in.

April 1, 2013:
You can’t teach speed. That’s how Don Jones, a strong safety for the Arkansas State Red Wolves and junior college transfer, has drawn interest around the NFL, including from the Patriots. The Baltimore Sun reported that he conducted a private workout for the Patriots recently. At the Arkansas State pro day, he ran a 4.42 and 4.40 40-yard dash, according to NFLDraftScout.com. He also recorded a remarkable 42-inch vertical jump, which has skyrocketed his draft stock. While he was estimated as a third- or fourth-round pick originally, that has more than likely changed. For his senior season, he recorded an unofficial 72 tackles with one interception and two passes defensed.

Sept 1, 2014:
Patriots claim Don Jones off waivers; release OL Chris Barker
Jones, 24, spent the 2013 season with the Miami Dolphins after joining the team as a seventh-round draft pick (250th overall) out of Arkansas State in the 2013 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder, played in all 16 games last season for Miami and led the team with 11 special teams tackles. He was released by Miami on Aug. 31, 2014.

Nov 27, 2014:
Patriots release S Don Jones
Jones, 24, was claimed off waivers from Miami and awarded to the Patriots on Sept. 1, 2014. He played in nine of the first 11 games for the Patriots and registered on defensive tackle and seven special teams tackles. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder, originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick by Miami (250th overall) out of Arkansas State in the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games as a rookie with the Dolphins and led the team with 11 special teams tackles.

Happy 60th birthday to Darren Twombly
Born May 14, 1965, in Manchester, Massachusetts
Patriot center, 1987; uniform #64
Signed as an undrafted rookie free agent from Boston College on May 5, 1987
Pats résumé: one season, one game

It may have been a replacement game, but in week four of the 1987 season Darren William Twombly became the first and only native of well-heeled Manchester (oh, excuse me; Manchester-by-the-sea) Massachusetts to play in an NFL game. The 6'4, 270 lb center was a graduate of Manchester High School (class of '83) and played his college football at Boston College (he was a sophomore when Doug Flutie was a senior). The Pats signed him as an undrafted rookie, releasing him on August 31. When the strike came along New England re-signed Twombly on September 26. He later signed with Green Bay, but his only regular season action came in a 14-7 victory over Buffalo on October 11, 1987.

Twombly still lives in his home town today, employed by the Commonwealth in the field of social work and benefits.

Oct 11, 1988:
Great Moves, on the Field and off -- Boston Globe
Twombly successful as player, coach
Darren Twombly is a guy who loves his job. Football has been a major part of his life since he was in grammar school, which translates nicely into life as an assistant football coach at Northeastern University.

Twombly, 33, made a name for himself in the early 80s when he was a two-way tackle at Manchester High School. he was team captain his senior year, a Globe All-Scholastic, and was Commonwealth Conference player of the year in 1982.

He was awarded a scholarship to Boston College, where he played under Jack Bicknell and his current boss, Barry Gallup, as a guard and a center. He played in the 1983 Liberty Bowl against Notre Dame as a freshman, was a starter in a win over Houston in the 1985 Cotton Bowl and a starter in a win over Georgia in the 1986 Hall of Fame Bowl.

Other pro football players with draft pick trade connections born on this date:

OLB Clay Matthews, 39 (May 14, 1986)
156 games, 91½ sacks, six Pro Bowls, 2010 Defensive Player of the Year
April 25, 2009: Pats trade their 2009 1st round pick (26th overall, Clay Matthews) with a 2009 5th round pick (162nd overall, Jamon Meredith) to the Packers for a 2009 2nd round pick (41st overall, Darius Butler), 2009 3rd round pick (73rd overall, subsequently traded) and 2009 3rd round pick (83rd overall, Brandon Tate)

As bad as this trade looked initially, that 3rd that was subsequently traded and at least resulted a third and a seventh round pick. The third was traded again, netting the Pats a 7th (Julian Edelman) and a second. The Pats traded up with that second - and drafted Rob Gronkowski.

LG Carl Nicks, 40 (May 14, 1985)
73 games, two-time Pro Bowler, 2011 1st Team All Pro, one super bowl ring
April 26, 2008: Pats trade their 5th round pick (164th overall, Carl Nicks) along with their 2008 1st round pick (7th overall, Sedrick Ellis) to New Orleans for the Saints 2008 1st round pick (10th overall, Jerod Mayo) and 2008 3rd round pick (78th overall, Shawn Crable)

Ellis may not have been as good a player as Mayo was, but Nicks was far better than Crable.
Overall the win for this trade goes to the Saints.

OLB Ronald Powell (May 14, 1991 - Jan 15, 2024)
One season, 14 games, zero starts
October 29, 2013: Pats traded their 2014 5th round pick (169th overall, Ronald Powell) to Philadelphia for the Eagles for 2014 6th round pick (198th overall, DE Zach Moore) and DT Isaac Sopoaga

Moore lasted one season, playing in eight games; 32-year old Sopoaga played in six games, with two starts in his final season in the NFL. Sopoaga was a letdown, with rookies Chris Jones and Joe Vellano performing better and getting playing time over him.

Other May 14 Trivia

May 14, 1974:
Patriots sign Emporia State LB Bob Clements, Norfolk State RB Pettus Farrar and Houston RB Tom Mozisek.

Clements was an undrafted rookie, Farrar was a 1970 5th round pick by the Chargers, and Mozisek was a 1972 third round pick by the Giants. None ever made it to a regular season NFL roster.

May 14, 1975:
The Pats re-sign veteran backup QB **** Shiner
No, I did not make that name up, young'uns.

Mr. Shiner finished his pro football career with the Pats in 1973-1974. From 1964-1974 he played in 99 games, throwing for 4,801 yards and rushing for another 161, with 38 total touchdowns.

May 14, 1984:
The New England Patriots announced Monday the signing of 15 free agents as the NFL club opened its 1984 sping mini-camp.

Five New England area players -- linebacker John Andreoli of Holy Cross, quarterback Michael Beauchemin of the University of Maine, nose tackle Mark Boulris of Harvard, tight end Ed Meacham of Springfield College and wide receiver Tom Mut of the University of Rhode Island - were among the group of 15 free agents.

Beauchemin, Boulris and three others were all signed after they participated in the Patriots annual free agent tryout camp at Sullivan Stadium on Sunday.

Others chosen at that camp were offensive center-guard Andrew Falls of California State-Hayward, defensive back Tony Lowden of the U.S. Marine Corps, punter Walter Marlin of Temple and offensive center Tom Shafer of West Chester State.

Other free agents signed by the Patriots were quarterback Tony Colao of Mount Union College, defensive end Clyde Glover of Fresno State, nose tackle Dean Haugum of Mesa College, offensive guard-tackle James King of Western Kentucky, defensive back Horace Pendergrass of Elizabeth City State and kicker Steve Varga of Baldwin Wallace.

That's a whole lot of small college (or no college) football personnel there.

May 14, 1985:
New England signs undrafted rookie free agent kicker Jess Atkinson, from Maryland

May 14, 2007:
The Patriots have signed two players who were in for tryouts during the team’s rookie minicamp: Georgia Tech wide receiver Chris Dunlap and Air Force defensive back Denny Poland.

Dunlap is 5-feet-11 inches, 200 pounds. Poland is 6-foot-1, 227 pounds.

Dunlap, 21, caught 13 passes for 142 yards over four seasons from 2003-06. He also returned 13 kickoffs for 265 yards in his college career and participated on several special teams units. Last season with the Yellow Jackets, Dunlap caught nine passes for 101 yards.

Poland, 24, started 31 of 34 games and recorded 180 career tackles (83 solo), including five career sacks. The 6-foot-1-inch, 225-pound defensive back also totaled three career receptions while playing for the varsity team for three seasons (2003-05). Poland served as a second lieutenant in the Air Force in 2006.

Albert Breer:
When Patriots area scout Bob Quinn approached Chris Vincent in the middle of the locker room on Saturday, the tailback had little idea what to expect.

For all he knew, Quinn would have a cab waiting out front and a plane ticket in hand.

"We're gonna keep you through Monday," he told Vincent instead. "So keep working hard."

And so continued a month that, in essence, has been one big job interview for the former Oregon Duck. At the Patriots' rookie minicamp, there were three layers of players. There were the draft picks, each of whom is virtually assured of making it to training camp. There were the signed prospects who went undrafted, each having a good shot of getting that far.

And then there were Vincent, receivers Chris Dunlap and Chris Baker, and linebacker Denny Poland - four players in to try out for the team with no guarantees and little shot of ever taking a real NFL snap. The ground each stands is so shaky that Baker was already gone by the time practice started yesterday.

May 14, 2012:
The New England Patriots announced Tuesday that they signed second-round draft choice DB Tavon Wilson.

In addition, the Patriots released first-year QB Mike Hartline.

Wilson, a defensive back from Illinois, was selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft with the 48th selection overall. 6-0 and 205 pounds, he was a three-year starter at Illinois, seeing action at both safety and cornerback. He played in 11 games as a true-freshman in 2008. Last season, he started in all 13 games with 12 at cornerback and one at safety and was named an honorable mention All-Big Ten after finishing with a career-high 81 total tackles.

Hartline, 23, was signed by the Patriots on Jan. 12, 2012 to a future contract. He was originally was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as a rookie free agent out of Kentucky on July 29, 2011. After being released by the Colts on Aug. 28, 2011, the 6-6, 210-pounder spent the first month of the season on the Indianapolis practice squad last year before being released and spending the rest of the year out of football.

May 14, 2013:

May 14, 2018:
Veteran punter Ryan Allen may have some competition in training camp this summer.

The New England Patriots announced today the signing of rookie free agent P Corey Bojorquez from New Mexico. To make room for Bojorquez on the roster, the Patriots released rookie WR Darren Andrews out of UCLA.

Bojorquez, 21, averaged a school record 47.3 yards per punt as a senior in 2017. The 6-foot, 200-pounder played two seasons at New Mexico after transferring from Cerritos Community College. During his two seasons at New Mexico, he totaled 116 punts for an average of 45.1-yards per punt.

Andrews, 22, was signed by the Patriots on May 11, 2018. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder finished his college career with 162 receptions for 1,977 yards and 15 touchdowns, good for fourth place on the school’s all-time reception list. He started all nine games that he played as a senior in 2017 and finished second on the team with 60 receptions for 773 yards and a team-high 10 touchdown receptions.

Darren Andrews was placed on NFI due to a torn ACL the next day; he was waived as part of final roster cuts a year later.

Bojorquez did not make the Pats roster, but has played in the NFL for seven seasons now. He led the league with 50.8 yards per punt for the Bills in 2020, the 7th highest single-season average in NFL history. He has also led the league with the longest punt of a season twice: 72 yards in 2020, and 82 yards in 2021. In 2024 Bojorquez led the NFL in punts (89), punting yardage (4,387) and longest punt (87 yards) with the Browns.

May 14, 2019:
The New England Patriots sign first round draft pick N'Keal Harry to a four-year, $10.22 million contract through 2022, with a one year team option for 2023. The deal included a $5,364,252 signing bonus, $8,900,237 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $2,524,587. In 2021, Harry would earn a base salary of $1,413,032, while carrying a cap hit of $2,754,095 and negative cap savings if he was cut.

Uggh.

May 14, 2021:
Cameron McGrone began the 2021 season on the non-football injury list due to a bad knee, and finished the year on the covid list. He spent 2022 on the practice squad, with the exception of three late season games when he was elevated to the active roster but was a healthy scratch. The Colts signed him after he returned to the practice squad, and he played in 14 games for Indy in 2023, with all his snaps coming on special teams.
